Hi Terri.................got some info on getting places for you.
Do you plan to visit the Abbey and the records office on the same day? To be honest Barking is not exactly the nicest place in the world and certainly wouldn’t have anything other than the Abbey and Church worth visiting. Chelmsford isn’t exactly the most exciting place either!! Getting to Barking from South Kensington is quite easy – a district line tube will take you to Barking (about 50 minutes) and it’s a shortish walk from there (out of the station and turn right). If you then want to go on to the records office you will need to take the district or a Hammersmith and city tube to West Ham and then a Jubilee line to Stratford – from there you can take a mainline train to Chelmsford. If you’re going direct from South Kensington to the records office you need to take a train from Liverpool street – Piccadilly line to Holborn and change to the central line to Liverpool street. Main line trains are quite speedy - it will take about 30 minutes. The station is about a 15 minute walk from the records office - Bus numbers 47, 54 & 56 from the station stop on Springfield Road opposite Tesco supermarket, just a few minutes' walk from the record office. Follow the signs to "Wharf Road Car Park". I presume you’ve made arrangements to visit the records office – there are things you have to do. If you haven’t then access their website on essexcc.gov.uk – archives and museums - and that will give you all the info you need.
Anything else I can help you with? I work in central London so am just full of advice on places to visit :)
xx
