How old should you be when you start going to the gynocologist? I'm 19 and never been, but I'm wondering if I should go. Thanks!

I didn't go until I was 21. I have heard that once your period starts, you should go regularly (once a year).

You should start to go when you become sexually active.

I don't care what anyone says...ya shouldn't go until you think you may have a problem in that area of your body (i.e, STD, infection). It's not worth the embarrassment in my opinion to go and have them tell you you're okay.

I was always told to go when you become sexually active or when you turn 18...whichever comes first...

When I went to the Dr he said that I didn't need to have one until I became sexually active and even then I could wait about 6 months after that. Then I'm to come in every 2 years for a check-up.
I couldn't stand going in once a year. The 2 years comes around fast enough for me!

I have always heard once you turn 18 even if you aren't sexually active you should go but I think here lately they changed the age to 21 if your not sexually active. However once you become sexually active you should defenitly go at least once a year.

I didn't go until I was about 19 and had some irregular bleeding. Turns out it was a rupture cyst. It was nice to have been because I was assaulted the next year and I had already been through the first exam and had a good doc I was comfortable with. To have been through the assault and then have my first gyn exam right after would have been too traumatic. I probably wouldn't have been examined, but I needed to be because I ended up contracting HPV and I had dysplasia the next year.
I think it is a good idea to have the professional relationship with a good doc in place before you need it. Having an infection or something else added to the fear of that first exam adds up to a lot of unnecessary stress and will make the exam much harder. It just makes sense to go in and learn what it is like and hear that everything is healthy under normal circumstances. Then, go back as often as your doc says you should unless you have a problem sooner.

dark stranger I will have to disagree with you on this one..I went late myself because of the embarrasment thing (28) and did not even wanted to go back then until my coworker one day was telling me the case of this young gal she knew that was going to get married and went to the gyn for a prescript of bc pills to find out she had cancer. And she was even a virgin! Anyways I heard that and I couldnt sleep well til I got checked. I should have gone sooner. Thankfully I was okay and now Im strict with the yearly test. I do a full physical each year.

I agree with the 18 or sexually active, whichever comes first. Yeah it's embarrassing, especially if you're not sexually active, but your health is at stake here.. I think it's worth a few minutes of embarrassment. I went to the gyno for the first time when I was 18, and I was still a virgin. I was very nervous and uncomfortable, but it was good to get checked out just to see if everything's normal down there. I'm 22 now and no longer a virgin, and going to the gyno is no big deal. You just have to get it out of the way.
