View Full Version : Gallbladder and diarrhea?

I have tried searching but I can't seem to find the information I need. I have been diagnosed with a small gallstone and am scheduled to see a surgeon next week. My GP thinks I should have the gallbladder out and I agree! I have gone more than a year with intermittent pain in the upper right quadrant, nausea and diarrhea that is pretty severe. I also feel "bloated" and just bad!

My first doctor, who I left for many reasons, seemed to think it was "all in my head" and didn't even do an Ultrasound to check. I was prescribed anti-anxiety meds instead! Needless to say they did no good and I am no longer on them. She also told me that the diarrhea is not related to gallbladder issues. It seems that many on here who have had gallbladder problems also have diarrhea. Is this considered a symptom or am I an exception?

Thanks in advance!

well i am 100% with you on these 2 symptoms.... i don't know if my gallstones are related to it or not but i'm thinking it probably is.... my body "acts" like it doesn't even have a gallbladder... the way my stomach reacts to food, is the way someone's stomach without a GB would react... maybe we have the same problem...

Hi! I always believed that diarrhea came about after the gall bladder was removed. I had my gall bladder out over a year ago and I have bouts of constipationa dnd diarrhea. It is either feast of famine with me. Maybe some of your problems are related to your gall bladder, but in all honesty speaking for myself and others that have written on the boards, many times stomach and digestive problems go hand in hand with gall bladder problems, but still continue to bother us after the gall bladder is removed. Maybe whatever caused the gall bladder to go bad has something to do with the entire system having probllems. That's not to say you won't feel a lot better after your gall bladder is removed. I really don't have the pain in my upper right part of my stomach anymore and I can wear a bra again where that area was sensitive to touch before my operation. You should still feel better than you do now, bit the diarreah may not be due to your gall bladder problems and it could in fact get worse for a while after the operation. I still have problems including rib pain which I was told was excess gas, so while my gall bladder operation did help in some areas, it didn't solve all my GI problems. I really hope it helps you and to be more optimistic there are a lot of people out there that have had the surgery and feel just fine now. Good luck.

i read somewhere that a dysfunctional gallbladder, is basically like having no gallbladder at all, which would make your body react like it doesn't have one.... which would more then likely cause diarrhea... maybe you should check and see how your gallbladder is functioning... i'm going to see if i can get that checked out... although the surgeon may just decide to go ahead with the surgery and not look into other things because of the gallstones...

I had over 40 gallstones the surgeon said when he cut open my gallbladder after having it removed a couple of weeks ago. I had no diareha before it was removed but I have since found that any time I eat anything fried or real greasy that I have a dumping syndrome. I talked to the surgeon about that yesterday and was told that should go away in 4-6 months time.

Hi there - with my inflamed GB, one of my worst symptoms (along with pain/nausea) was the diarrhea. Of course, I also suffered more diarrhea problems after the GB was out, but have been able to control it with medication. I think diarrhea with GB problems can be a very common situation.
