I have it and had a fusion when I was 17, I'm 27 now. Arthiritis is a definite. The curve makes the spine degenerate more rapidly when you have scoliosis. It is a horrible disease. As far as treatment, you need to find out the degree of the curve before you can weigh your options. Do you have a good scoliosis specialist? Christina franjo 01-13-2003, 07:34 PM Hi...I have severe scoliosis and spina-bifida, along with the hip problems that accompany scoliosis. I've read in my records that I have "pseudo arthritis", meaning it acts as though it is arthritis. Small consolation...in my mind, if it smells like it, looks like it, and acts like it....must be it. As a child I had a fusion then a Herrington Rod implant which I kept for twenty years. I still think it was a mistake when they took that baby out. I plan to pursue the feasibility of having those rods replaced. They've been out for fifteen years and the curvature has worsened. The procedure has improved greatly over the years...the re-coup time is substantially less, and the newer materials they use allow more flexibility to the spine. You never mentioned how severe your scoliosis is, so this suggestion may not apply to your case. I have to believe that therapy could be beneficial, at least in increasing torso strength, regardless of what my HMO says...I've been appealing for therapy for nine months now. I agree with ChristinaD...find a good specialist....advice I wish I'd gotten years ago! |
