I have been taking inderal LA propranolol 80 mg 1x a day for about a year. I was given it for anxiety and migraine (which i never knew for sure if I had migraine) Also my blood pressure is always up at appyts. but not when I take it myself. Around 135 over 95 cant remember exactly. Myself 110 over 65 was my last reading. I would like to go off of this med but my dr. always tells me to stay on it. How do you wean yourself off? Also have any of you experienced any of these symptoms while taking this med:
1. feeling like somethings crawling on your arms legs feet (moves around) but nothings there
2. stomach problems and gerd I think mine are caused by the med.
3. Sexual problems
4. weight gain
Any other symptoms you have had please let me know.
Was also told I may have fibromyalgia. Any help would be great. Thanks.

On any beta blocker (i.e. Toprol), I will answer your questions from my experience. 1st, if your b/p is that good away from the doctor, maybe you don't truly have high b/p. A lot of people have White-Coat at the doc., including myself... (160/80 at the doc., 130/70 1/2 hour later). I average 120/70. Wean slowly...
1) I felt tingly at times in my arms & head on Toprol, not anymore.
2) Definitely. My appetite decreased, my stomach growled & churned more in the mornings & my right toe had gerd like symptoms.
3) At times yes on Toprol, on Altenolol no. Common side-effect of Beta-Blockers.
4) Could be a side-effect, but I actually lost weight, because I always felt like junk on a beta-blocker.
Get a 2nd opinion... you may not have high b/p. Take an average on your own for a month away from the doc. I have isolated high b/p caused by anxiety at the doc.

spotty,
My $.02:
1) Paresthesias (tingling/numbness in extremities) are definitely caused by beta blockade.
2) Yep, beta blockers relax the stomach's sphincter and can contribute to GERD
3) If you are a male beta blockers cause erectile difficulty more often than not (females have fewer erection problems :D)
4) I found weight gain a real problem with propranolol.
It seems you need it only for the maybe-migraines; I doubt you have hypertension.
For migraines, the dose is probably too high anyway.
You will need to wean yourself from this drug over several weeks and watch your herart-rate or BP doesn't soar.
If the migraines recur regularly you might want to take maybe 1/4 pill a day (20 mg. time release.) If not, then kiss them goodbye.

When my dr. asked me if I have migrains I told him I get bad headaches sometimes but I didnt know if they were migrains. I get the feeling he needed to put that on there to prescribe them to me. He mostly said it was for anxiety and because my blood pressure was high. He said I only had panic disorder. He left (moved away) and A new dr. took his place and he said I probably have fibromyalgia. When I asked if he thinks the anxiety was caused by the fibro and if I have panic disorder he said I probably dont have it but we will keep an eye on it and to stay on the propranolol so it will help with the nerves?????? This was after 2 years of tests and weird symptoms that I was going to the first doc. for.
Thanks so much for both of your replies.

spotty,
It SLOWS the heart markedly so maybe the beats SEEM more pronounced.
My experience is that if youy look too hard for an internal sympptom, you'll FIND it....A sense of a hard heartbeat often accompanies anxiety/panic.

I used inderal for about a month and went off it cold turkey without any problems. Your anxiety symtoms will return along with your sexual ability. Propranolol blocks sympathetic nervous action throughout the body, and you need that for arousal and sexual response, that's why you have ED, but you'll be back to normal when you stop using inderal.
If you need something else for anxiety and slight high blood pressure, try atenolol, which only blocks sympathetic nervous response in the heart along with a benzo like xanax or klonopin.
hope this helps,
