Surgeon has told me I shouldn't play volleyball anymore since my cervical spine surgery. I had an anterior diskectomy with fusion (& plate at C5-6, C6-7) on 2-16-04. But, he said I could ride a rollercoaster NEXT summer. How can I ride a coaster but not play volleyball?
Anyone?

wow, that is strange that he would say that. I myself had fusion of c5-c6 in late nov of 2003. The only thing that i can think of is when u ride a coaster u can predict when u need to brace yourself, where as when you play v-ball there are times where you may not be able to prepare for a fall to sand or ground or possibly colliding with someone else?
I'd really like to know what others think as well b/c i was an active person myself b4 my fusion and woukd like to stay somewhat active.

Hello Jen
Welcome to the Healthboards. I myself have not had a cervical fusion but do have cervical injury. Years ago my favorite game to play when family and friends got together was to play volleyball. I can tell you that I only played for enjoyment and I am an amateur that is for sure. On more than one occasion, because of not paying attention or just gossiping during the game I have gotten hit directly in the face with that darn ball. Of course almost everyone would laugh but it sure did hurt and at the same time did jolt my neck. I do not know if you play professional volleyball or not. Gosh, it you do I don't think that you would let this happen...lol But still, accident's do happen all the time. Also the previous poster stated with colliding into one another and falling. I also would not ride a rollercoaster either. But again this is only my opinion. And I choose this without even having the surgery. I am just trying to prolong having to have the surgery.
Overall this is your decision to make. Are you willing to take the chance of injuring yourself again. If your surgery has been successful and your pain has diminished, I would be very happy with that and not take any chances. I sincerely wish you the very best.

I had a cervical fusion and I can tell you that my doctor would never say it is okay to ride a roller coaster OR play volleyball. The neck is a very delicate area and another injury could mean serious trouble.
