Hi
I am new here and have some questions. I have a 3 year old son. He seems to display the signs of cerebral palsy. He is severely speech impaired, runs with a wide based gait, and occasionally drools. I feel he has CP, and had it from birth. I was just wondering for those of you with children who have CP, did their height become affected. My son was a large baby of average height, but he fell off the charts at about 18 months. The dr. wasn't concerned with his small stature, just that he fell away from his normal growth pattern. His bone age 6 months ago was dtermined to be between the ages of 15-18 mths. I can hardly believe that, he is now in 2T pants 7 months later. Yet he seems to be the same height as he was before. Anyone familiar with this or been through. Thanks.

My son's height was not affected. In fact, he's quite tall. But that doesn't mean anything for your child. CP has a wide array of symptoms. If you're not satisfied with the doctor's response, consult with him or her again and maybe seek a second opinion.

Does he have problems with eating (=chewing, swallowing etc.)?
CP in itself does not affect one's height.

What I can't figure out is why his blood work came out fine for having enough vitamins and nutrients. I guess its because me and his dad are short, and maybe our is just a slow grower. The dr. wants to do a height check next month, hopefully I can get more information on whats going on.

There are no problems with chewing or swallowing. He does drool sometimes.

Maybe there's no cause for alarm. It sounds like the blood work was fine. Maybe he'll hit a growth spurt soon!

My son has a growth hormone difficiency and it is related to his CP. The pituitary gland that produces the hormone is right next to the region of his brain that is undeveloped. The neurologist suggested a test for this when his other doctor said not to worry because of the neurologists knowledge of the possible connection. Growth hormone is a miraculous drug! He grew 6 inches in 5 months once he started it. He has pituitary dwarfism which is a separate problem from the CP, but as our neurologist explained to us, they know so little about these interactions between organs, particularly the brain. I would recommend that you check with your neurologist on the proximity and demand the appropriate test if you have to. Our doctor wasn't real adamant about having the test, so we just told him that we wanted to do it and he said okay. He warned us that insurance might not pay for it, but they did. In our case, my husband is 6'4" so even though our son was still on the growth chart, being at 5% didn't equate. I am so glad that we persisted! You may not have the same thing going on, but thought I would offer this anecdote as a possible scenario. Good luck in working it out!

Thank you so much for your reply! I am suspecting something like that, as well. My dr. said in June if he still has not grew any that she would refer me to a pediatric endocrinologist to further investigate this. I've hardly had to buy any close for him, because of this situation. However, he has grown a bit, because he went up one shoe size recently. Thank you so much, eases my mind.

Unfortunately he aged out of First Steps at 3 years old. I got some copies of his blood work that was done 6 months ago. Apparently, there was some abnormals on the organ disease panel that I will be questioning the dr. about in June. Thanks for the info.

Babyluv-
My 15 month old daughter has similar issues. She is extremely tiny in weight and slowly dropping in height. She was 8lbs 4 oz and 201/2 inches when she was born. Since then she just has a hard time gaining. Please update what you find out. I will have to look into the growth hormone possibility but would appreciate any new ideas. Good luck with everything! What was the test you were saying was abnormal? I still don't know a lot of the medical jargon. My daughter was diagnosted just recently.

Dear babytluv
I would get a second opinion quickly. I have a son who is a victim of shaken baby syndrom. His movements are spastic like in CP. I can't imagine a doctor watching height for a diagnois. My son is thirteen now and I'm certain he will be 6'1.
Blessings

eegazda,
My son, too, was an average size or a bit bigger than average, weighing in at 8lbs 13oz and 21in long at birth. The more I think about it, I feel he is just a slow grower and has been from birth. Just because he seems to grow very slowly should be no cause for the dr. to say there is something wrong. My husband is 5'6" and I am only 5'2", can't get a giant out of two midgets lol. As far as weight he is doing great, of course not gaining too much, because he is of short stature. I have been told boys growth patterns are different than girls. The boys seems to hit a big growth spurt in their late teens. Good luck with your daughter. I will keep you posted if I find out something new.
