I'm wondering if anyone has heard of Guillian Barre in association with some mysterious symptoms my husband has had. About 2 years ago he and his dad spent the weekend together--one week prior to his dad coming down with Guillian Barre Symdrome. His dad had a motor nerve form--his arms and legs were extremely weak and was hospitalized--a neurologist diagonosed him with G.B. and explained that it can take various forms--motor, sensory, or autonomic nervous systems being effected. She also explained that if the nerve sheaths aren't too damaged people can have complete recovery, but if the damage went beyong the protective sheaths to the nerves there can be permanent effects from the disease. Anyway about 1 week after his dad's acute stage with G.B., my husband began having chest pain, mostly on his left side, along with much difficulty breathing--couldn't get a full breath of air. He saw a Dr. who did many tests on him relating to cardiac problems along with extensive blood work--everything came out normal. Interestingly, in about the same amount of time it took his dad to come out of the really acute stage of G.B., my husband came out of the acute stage of "whatever it was"--his recovery has been very gradual, with periodic "flare ups" when he's catching a cold or very tired or stressed. When he has flare ups he also will have a full or bloated sensation on his left side. I've personally theorized that he contracted a strange form of Guillian Barre Syndrome, as his acute stage and recovery have been fairly parallel with his dads, and because he was with his dad the weekend prior. He experiences chest pain or tightness or difficulty breathing (on the left side) at some point each day, though has never experienced the severity of symptoms he had at the beginning, 2 years ago. Also, I don't know if this could be related at all, but he occasionally experiences difficulty swallowing--food (especially if dry texture) getting "stuck" on the way down. This has been since 1994 though, so I don't know if the 2 could be connected at all. He's worried at times that it could be some form of cancer, possibly effecting the lymph glands in the area. But I've never heard of cancer beginning as a strong acute stage, only to gradually improve with occasional flare ups afterwards. I've thought that it is something neurological, and Guillian Barre has been my best educated guess so far. Has anyone heard of something like this? Please let me know. Thanks.
