I have been taking Effexor XR since last October. It has been a miracle for me. At first, it made my anxeity worse. Give it time to start working. After the first 3 or 4 weeks, I gradually began to feel better little by little. I had a lot of side effects at first such as sleepiness, twitching, increased anxeity, no appatite. These all slowly went away. If you decide to take it, give it time to start working and for the side effects to go away. I am sooo glad I stuck it out. Best of luck!

a low starting dose often helps reduce side effects from an antidepressant, the tablet can be cut usually

valium type meds also reduce the side effects

From my experience, you will be able to function. I went to work every day and I was fine. I did throw up the first night I took it but I think that's my own fault. My doc told me to eat with it, and I didn't because I wasn't hungry. Big mistake. So make sure you eat with it. Now it's fine, I don't have to eat when I take it anymore. I remember that when I first started taking it I was waiting to have all kinds of bad side effects. I had read so much bad stuff about it. So try to keep your mind positive. I know how scary it is to start a med, so feel free to talk to me anytime about it! Remember to give it time to start working and don't be surprised if you feel worse at first. Hang in there!

I am one of the lucky ones who liked the first medicine they tried. I have never been on anything else. I know it's hard, but try to relax about the throwing up thing. You will make yourself sick just by being so worried about it. That's how I was....I was paying wayyyy too much attention to every little thing I was feeling because I was just waiting for bad side effects. What happened with the Paxil? Effexor XR did make me very sleepy at first. I told my doc and she told me to start taking it earlier. I was taking it before bed, and she told me to take at dinnertime. Now, it doesn't make me tired anymore, no matter what time I take it. It made my body twitch a lot, but that slowly went away. It also increased my anxiety for the first 2 weeks. I am so happy that I stuck it out.

paxil made me high literally!!and i panic when i dont feel like myself!!i walked around my house for 3 hrs!!! i almost put my fingers down my throat cause i wanted to throw up so bad and i think i wouldve if not for my phobia! being calm about throwing up isnt an option for me at all!! something ive always had something i will always panic about...this seems to be one of the only meds that tells u to eat with it. i can handle upset stomach, tiredness a bit of shakiness and such but i want to feel the same things i did with celexa and zoloft,i never ever use to worry about taking a med before for this problem until i had tha horrible reaction to paxil.im actually considering going back on celexa the withdrawl was horrible but i had little side effects this may sound silly but if u took a pill beofre for quite a while with no side effects is it poosible to have opposite side effects again?? that may sound silly but i guess i just dont want to go through what went through witht he paxil thats the irony of this entire thing i am the way i am from 1 bad experience with individual things in my life that got me this way!! i dont know if it makes much sense but as soon as i have a horriblw time with something once i avoid trying something even close to it altogether and this is what has got me in this mental state, knowing i haveta face these fears and get on with life. i am such and incredibly strong person,i am only 32 i left home at 16 i have 4 kids work ft married....pets,so a stressful life but i love it and thats the problem i want to start enjoying what i know i do love. thanks for being here to talk to, its really nice....

I'm also on Celexa, can I ask why you can't take it? What kind of side effects did you have. I'm not sure if it is working for me or not.

Thanks,
Julie

julie i just wanted to say i was the same way when on celexa i didnt notice anything working because it was so suttle with such little side effects i didnt think anything was happeneing now when i look back i realize it was and also within days of taking it i noticed a difference. i did post something to you on board hope u read it. also just wanted to add getting off of celexa is horrible im dreading that part you MUST wean off of it slowly it is not very nice at all in fact i was very much against the drug when i was coming away from it i was angry at the company that made it , now i realize it is one of the better things ive taken so keep up with it, it is a very suttle thing. also watch what u eat cause i gained 40 lbs in 5 months!!!!! now im going to keep it under control.
