I've been going to doctors for quite some time on this but if anyone has a similar situation, I would be delighted to hear about what steps they've taken. About six months ago, I began having a sharp, severe pain my my right leg. I waited a month (stupid, I know) and then went to the doctor when it became so unbearable I couldn't sleep. The doctor immediately had me have an ultrasound to rule out DVT/blood clots. They found nothing of the sort. Then, the doctor had me go have x-rays taken. The radiologist said that they found an "incidental ossifying fibroma" near my knee so my doctor referred me to an orthopedic specialist. The specialist took x-rays and also had me go through an MRI. He said he found nothing and could find no evidence of a fibroma. So, basically I am back where I started: knowing nothing. I still have the pain...it's on an off...but when it's on, it's terrible. It feels like my leg is aching on the inside, deep inside the bone. They had me take Celebrex to see if that helped, and it didn't. So, now they've basically told me that it's my imagination. Has anyone else had anything similar?

Don't you love it when they don't have an answer and tell you it is all in your head.
I have had pain in my legs deep pain like your talking about for about a year.
I have diabetes so naturally I go right away. Nothing, I had all sorts of tests and they keep saying nothing is wrong, no blockages etc.
At night sometimes it hurts like heck and I get up and put heat on my legs.
So far the only thing I take is that Tylenol for arthritis and it seems to help a lot.
I get this swelling just above my knee like a swollen spot that comes and goes with the pain. I rub it, massage it, it goes away. Doesn't hurt but when I walk a lot it flares up and my knee hurts. Maybe it is arthritis but
something is not right. I suppose when I get older again, they will come up with a name other then stress. :)

I've got a similar problem, well at least with pain and the doc not listening. I hit the top of my knee while climbing a ladder, when I put my knee down I heard a snap. I was in great pain and could barely stand. At first the doctors said I bruised the bone. It's been six months and have been seeing an Orthopedic for 2 mos. He said I have petella tendonitous and am going to PT but it's not helping much. I need to have an MRI done, I believe I have a PCL tear. The only thing I can do for the pain is ice, allergic to ibuprofin and tylenol doesn't help.
Can you think of anything that brought on the pain? Where is the deep pain specifically at in your leg? Does it feel like shin splints? If you haven't tried take a calcium supplement for awhile and see if it might help. My pain feels like you smacked your funny bone, but on and around the knee cap. Hope I helped some

I have leg & knee pain, but it is a burning, cause of a herniated disc in my back. The pain goes to the knee, my knee can swell up & get red & hot. If yours is doing similar, have they looked into the pain coming from your back? My back didn't hurt at all, it was all in my leg & knee.

It doesn't burn but it may be a start to ask them if it might have something to do with my back. I hope your's is all better and thanks for the info!

I think I will try the Tylenol Arthritis. I haven't tried anything OTC. I wondered if it was arthritis, too, but I'm only 24. I know some people my age who have arthritis but it's usually in their hands, not their legs. And can't they test for that? (Thanks so much for replying to my thread!)

Yes, that's the only real pain I've ever suffered from. I've never been injured and I've never broken a bone. I think that might be why it's such a mystery to the doctors.

Hey!
Sounds like you are in a situation a lot of people are glad they aren't in. It's a tough situation to be in for sure.
One of the most important things you can do right now is figure out (when the knee is sore) if in fact the tissues surrounding the knee and the knee itself is warm to the touch and/or red from inflammation. If this is happening to you, ice it. If it feels deep and achy and there is NO inflammation, try some deep moist heat (a hot, wet towel would do the trick). Have you ever heard of a trigger point? It's a knot in a muscle. There are plenty of trigger points that have a referral pattern (you could have a trigger point somewhere on your body but that's not where you feel it...you feel it somewhere else). When you say to everyone that you have deep pain in your knee area, it could mean there are trigger points in one or more of your gluteal muscles. If nothing is helping you, might I suggest a massage therapist? These professionals can work to relieve those trigger points and if you are desperate...that's where I would be going to see if they gave me some relief. (also, one time at the massage therapist likely won't help...it does take a couple of times going if you are interested)

Thanks for your response, tishea! The massage therapist sounds like a great idea. I had never heard of a trigger point and am interested in reading more about it. I think the pain is more deep and achy w/o inflammation, so I will definitely give the hot towel a try. Thanks again!

I had this problem last October and lasted until this February. I don't know how it started. Anyway, went to the Orthopedic Surgeon in January, he did his examination and x-rays and told me to take 2 Aleve a day for two weeks and then come back, if necessary. It wasn't necessary. Within a week I felt better. I don't know if it was the passage of time and or what. However, I put up with not being able to sleep, walk very well, etc. for quite some time. Hope you feel better.

My family doc said that arthritis showed up in my back on an xray. Don't know for sure if it does, but that is what he said.

Arthritis will only show up on x-ray if it is OSTEOARTHRITIS. If it is RHEUMATOID it will not show up on an x-ray and the joint will be red, swollen and stiff

Okay here goes.
I am 42 soon to be 43. When I was 26 I noticed I had pain in my right knee on the inside{distal}. I was a runner and had just had a baby. I went to the dr they said slack off on the running so I did.
When I was 27 my husband was killed in a military accident and my bad back started acting up again. It was put down to muscles spasms, "don't worry".
I remarried at 29 and right before my 30th BDAy my back popped. I had a ruptured disc so that was causing the leg pain.
In 1995 before my 34th Bday{i spent it in hospital having surgery} I went to dr in feb. I told him I was having trouble walking and the pain was horrible. He said nerve damage from back"don't worry" Well I went back 3 months later and told him I think I have a tumor and could feel it. He laughed but did referr me to an Ortho dr.
He ran new MRI of back but when I went back 2 weeks later for discussion of MRI he observed I was walking worse. He took Xrays and said "Oh my GOD you have a tumor on your femur!" It was a giant cell tumor which usually strikes females between 20-40. I went to San Antonio, we lived in LA Ca at the time {military} and was given a choice of total amputation , above the knee, a cadaver bone which would have meant 1 year in a cast and possibility of rejection and infection, or this new limb salvage prosthesis. I chose the LSP but it has been a long nightmare.
Anyway it took my tumor about 8 yrs to show up on xrays and for it to be felt both touching and painwise. My knee was also swollen, still is due to complications of LSP but I had never in my wildest dreams thought I would have a tumor. It was benign which is a plus but it was so large it was the bottom part of my femur and I was walking around with a broken leg, hence the pain. NOt broken in traditional terms such as a fracture.
Good luck with your leg. I didn't tell you this to scare you but I wish I had known about the possibility of this when I was 26 as then the surgery would have been minimal, scooping out the small tumor and packing with bone cement opposed to amputating due to damage to bone.

Bonnie: Thank you for sharing your story. This definitely motivates me to find out what the heck is going on! I'm so sorry you had to go through all of that. There is nothing like knowing something is wrong and having doctors laugh in your face about it (or totally ignore it). I'm fairly certain that the condition in my leg has gotten worse over the past couple weeks. I have spent more and more nights laying awake with the pain. Hopefully soon someone will give me some answers. Thanks again!
