Garion, sometimes when I couldn't get comfortable any other way I would do this so it might help you: roll a hand towel up lengthwise to make a neck roll pillow; then lie flat on your back with it under your neck. Hope you feel better soon.

I also had better luck laying flat with a cervical pillow. The first few weeks are going to be tough, but it will get better a little at a time. I'm at almost 9 wks and there are still days that remind me that this was a serious surgery and that I must slow down and keep good posture. I found that good posture is critical when sitting in any chair, even for short periods. Good Luck.

I bought a wonderful microfoam cervical pillow and it has been a life saver. I also found that alternating ice packs and heat to the tops of my shoulders helps the muscle spasms. I am 6 weeks postop ACDF and PCDF 2-3,3-4,4-5, and 5-6 and am still having pain and muscle spasms although not as bad and requiring less pain medication and muscle relaxers than before. I too have trouble getting in a comfortable sitting position but I have a comfy recliner that helps and I also find that one of those cheapy traveling blow-up cervical pillows helps in addition to the hard cervical collar. It supports my neck better when sitting in the recliner. If I sleep in the "wrong" position at night I really have discomfort when I get up. There are good days and bad days but the good days are beginning to outnumber the bad days. I just have to remember that this is major surgery and it will take a good while to recover.
Good luck!

Hi all, I will be 6 weeks post op on Monday. I still have alot of pain and extremely tight muscles. Alot of the time i find myself asking why i even bothered having the surgery! I sometimes have worse pain now than before the surgery and still have pain, numbness and tingling in my arms. I just keep telling myself it has to get better sooner or later. I also have one of those form fitting sponge pillows ( not sure what it is really called ) and it was my life saver the first few weeks post op! I wish you luck and i hope the pain gets better real soon! You might want to invest in one of those pillows i was talking about, you can pretty much form it or even roll it to the size that fits you best. They are $19.00 at Walmart. Hurdy
