View Full Version : Oral Thrush - Very scared!

Hello.

Recently I have developed some oral thrush. This is a white coating over my tongue. It's not extremely bad but it is noticable. It's not sore, it doesnt itch, it's more just a white coat which I can see.

About a week ago I bite my tongue and it bleed - Could this have caused the trush?

Also, I suffer from extremely bad anxiety - Could this be related?

To be honest, I'm extremely scared. I had a unprotected sexual encounter about 6 weeks ago. This week I went for an STD/HIV test but won't have results until Friday. I'm scared to death that this thrush could be caused by possible HIV infection.

I asked the doctor and he said it would be high unlikely, even if I had HIV, that it could develop so quickly.

IM SO SCARED RIGHT NOW - Im in a constant state of panic, because all the research I've done on the Internet relates thrush back to HIV, and I dont have diabetes, havent taken antibiotics, dont wear dentures, etc - I should be relatively healthy, except for my anxiety.

Has anyone ever had oral thrush develop before? due to no real reason?

Any info would be so so much appreciated.

I'm only young and I'm so scared right now.

shal.

Hi ther Shal,
First off.... breath...
If it is oral thrush, it is not a really big thing and easily treated, your anxiety alone could be causing you not to have proper nutrition which could open the door for many little things that would normally have no way to get to you in, stress can often make it easier to catch colds and other small infections because it throws your body chemistry off a bit.
So first things first... breath...
You got a very scary wake up call on the dangers of unprotected sex, but more than likely it is no more than a scare.
First you have to treat the thrush, use the meds that your doctor orders for you, sterilize your toothbrush and as soon as it clears, get a new one.
hugs :)

Thanks Penny for your reply.

I'm trying to stay calm and I have a whole week ahead of me before I recieve my results for HIV testing. You can't imagine how scary this is. It makes me want to stop breathing.

I'm going to try and make sure my diet is healthy this week with a lot of fresh foods, etc. Maybe my anxiety and poor diet caused it? - I'm just so scared of having HIV. I want to live a long, happy life :(

Thanks again for your reply.

I have had oral thrush a few times, and it was because of medication I was taking. One was a pill (don't remember which) and the other was because of an inhaled steroid for asthma. I still have to gargle and brush my teeth after using my inhaler so I don't get thrush again.

Mine went away quickly and on it's own.

Hi shal!
Were you diagnosed by a doctor and told that it was oral thrush?
I've had a similar situation, I have a very mild white coating on the back of my tongue, it started when I took an antibiotic that I was allergic to, it never really disappeared since that time, it did worry me for a while, and because of my constant worry of what this might be, it started to get worse until somehow I have gotten over it.

Anyway, if you smoke, take drugs or even drink too much alcohol, a whitecoating would develop on your tongue, that's what my doctor had told me.

Stress also plays a major role in creating such symptoms, I've never gotten involved into a real risky behavior, however when I started reading about the HIV and it's symptoms online, I started getting every single symptom out there.

Goodluck with your results, I am pretty sure you're negative. :)

hi there. i have oral thrush also and have had it for 3 years now. i had lyme disease for 6 years and a year on antibiotics and naturally my sugar and yeast intake helped that along. now i can't seem to get rid of it. i use a perscription to calm it down, but i am not very good about cutting the things out of my diet that i should to totally get rid of the candida. please try not to worry, all you need is some nystatin to clear it up.. also eat yogurt, it helps. and i also take acidolphis as that works as well.

In 1972 my 2 month old breast feed baby developed oral thrush. Her doctor didn't bat an eye. He said it was very common. He treated it and it went away. We lived in a clean house and aids didn't even exist then. Thrush is a yeast infection. If you haven't taken any antibiotics lately, have you used alot of germ killing mouth products?Yeast thrives when the beneficial bacteria aren't around. Eat yogurt with live cultures.
Good luck, I'll bet yo'll be fine.

Shal, first of all let me just tell you that even if you did contract HIV 6 weeks ago there is NO WAY you would have advanced HIV disease in that short of time. So if your worried about thrush being a result of that perticular encounter, don't. I had thrush once when I was 16 for absolutely no reason, I sucked on anti-fungle tables and it went away. If you have had unprotected sex, a blood transfusion or used a needle in the past 2-15 years then the thrush MAY be HIV related. Thrush is only onc symptom of advanced HIV disease and it could be caused by many, many other things (or nothing at all). I wouldn't worry until I got that HIV test back. If you're a straight male who doesn't use IV drugs or have sex with multiple partners or prostitutes, I really wouldn't worry too much.
