View Full Version : back pains

Hello everyone. I have a question and am hoping I could get some answers.

Ever since I was 14 years old I have had pain in my lower back. I was on my skateboard and dropped in on a half pipe, while that part went fine, coming up on the other side I flew off (up into the air) and landed on my lower back on the big metal bar at the top. I was knocked out and slid down the half pipe. I got home by my friends pushing me on my skateboard since it hurt to walk. It even hurt to roll on the skateboard since every tiny little bump would shoot a stinging pain up my back.

I was basically bedstruck for about a week and a half. (summertime) My parents were never aware of my pain since I never told them, they just wondered why I wasn't out. After a while I went back out but couldn't run or skateboard for months after that. (could jog a littlebit after maybe a month.)

Now I am 17 and every day after coming home from school I still lay down on my bed for 15 mintues on my back it feels so relieving. I dont carry those textbooks in my bookbag since it hurts after a while and when I do it is only one, but only between classes. My lower back hurts from the school day or after any day... doesn't matter if I carry anything at all. But my upper back between my shoulderblades also bothers me but doesn't require me to lay down or anything of that such. (bothers me know as I type) It could be from bad posture but my parents have always noted my good posture.

I've learned that working out with weights is the best preventive measure for bodily injury and prevents back problems so I have been working out for past year. (I take care with my back).

I was wondering what I should do? I know I should ask a doctor but I have this thing about going to the hospital. I just recently got 2 kidney stones and I tried as hard as I could to not show my pain but after a couple days it was unbearable and I couldn't walk without showing agony. As you might have guessed I dont show pain and I dont tell people about it. I have tried to tell my doctor when I went for something else but I feel foolish since it isn't PAIN but rather uncomfortable ... very.

Thanks

Almar

Hi Almar and welcome http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/wave.gif

I hope you learn a lot from what everyone here has to say. Many of us have suffered years...some over 20. Our suffering matches that of your worst pain...24 hours a day/ 7 days a week...constant and sometimes mind-blurring pain all the time. I am telling you this because that is where you are headed friend. Almost everything you will read here are results from either injuries...or from life-long "dealing" with their pain. It becomes chronic after 1 year of pain. If you are chronic...it will NEVER go away. It will always be there, many times when you least expect it. Have I put the fear in you yet? http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/wink.gif

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU TELL YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY about your pain. Do it yesterday.....you are such a young man to have to deal with pain on a daily basis (whether it is just bothersome or is shooting hot sparks up your back). Pride is NOTHING (at least the pride you are carrying....I am a "guy", I'm not supposed to cry or show pain) compared to living in H-E-L-L for the rest of your life. Please, please, please go see your doctor and tell him/her what is going on. You should prolly have some tests done too, but I'm sure once you tell your doctor what's going on--he will have a whole battery of tests for you to do.

Don't mess with your back, son. There are NO replacements for that body-part. I hope you hear from other "spineys" (as we call ourselves) who will help you too. Good luck...and we are all here to help with any questions you may have.

Hi Almar and welcome http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/wave.gif
I agree with successtory, you need to tell your doctor about your pain so you can work on treating it NOW, before you end up with a lifetime of pain.

There are good diagnostic tests, starting with xrays and an MRI, which can help see if there's any damage... and they don't have to be done in the hospital http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/wink.gif

If at 17 you need to lie down for 15 minutes after school, something is not right in there. Back problems usually don't start until people get to their 30s. Please, get it checked out!

Best wishes,

Hi Almar, Please tell your parents about the skateboard incident that happened when you were 14, and that you have been having back problems since. My son, who is 20, was in a minor fender-bender with his friend, several years ago. We didn't take him to the dr. when it happened because he said he was fine and his back was just alittle sore at the time. I wish now we had taken him to get checked out, while he was still covered under our health insurance, because he has flares ups with his back hurting and it prevents him from being able to hold a job. He now has no insurance or money to go to dr. to get help. So PLEASE tell your parents about your back, so they can get you the proper treatment you need while you are still covered under their insurance. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gifCindy

Hi Almar,

You should seek professional help so that it does not get too serious or dangerous to your help. In the meanwhile you should try out my suggestion:

It seems that you might be experiencing Sciatic Nerve entrapment. This Nerve start from your lumber area ( L5 / Sacrum ), goes through your buttock area, around your upper leg bone, splits in two, go around both side of your knee, down on the outside of your lower leg and to your foot. Any of the pain that this nerve is causing will be felt in all or partially in those areas. By the way, that Sciatic Nerve, at your buttock, is almost the size of your thumb. It is the most common type of Back Pain and easy to have. It does not require very much strain to have this Injury / Pain. If caught early enough, it is the easiest one to fix otherwise, it require many session of Massage Therapy. You may also have some long recovery pain from your injury.
If you are willing to try this Method that I am using on my wife and many of my Clients, you may get some relief: " It requires three person, including yourself, to use the special technic. On a very stiff bed, you lay straight on your side, bracing yourself with one hand to sturdy yourself, one person puts his/her hands against your lower back spine so that it does not curve and the third one grabs both of your feet together and brings them forward as far as possible toward your belly then, brings them back down in the same manner to where they were. You then, lay on your belly, the second person holds your lower back spine again and the third person grabs one leg at a time, does not matter which one that you start with, moves it straight outward as far as possible and back then, the other leg in the same manner and back. At that point, you should lay there for a few minutes to catch your breath and then, get out of the bed from your left or right side and not forward. This method should fix your Sciatic Nerve entrapment.

The next thing that you should do and it is extremely important, is to get on a kitchen table and do the following exercise that I will try to describe to you as follow:

Lay and rest your upper body on the table;
Extend your arms forward to hold yourself on the table;
Put both of your leg and feet together;
Lift both of your legs/feet up slowly as far as possible;
Hold;
put both of your leg and feet back down slowly;

Do as many as you can and repeat as many time during the day and for many more days to come. You will have strenghten your back and as long as you exercise, this Sciatic Nerve problem should not reoccur again to you. You should keep doing this Exercise to keep your back in shape.

You should print this technique so that you do not forget the way it is done. If this technique is not followed to the letter, you will get a lot of pain by its improper use.

Hope that you follow it properly and that it works for you.

Good Luck and God bless
