I have never taken it myself but my sister does. She is 79 and she has been taking it for some time. May I ask what side affects you have from it?? She has been complaining last I spoke with her about being so tired and not caring to do anything which is definitely NOT her even at her age! akjoha

I take Toprol and haven't noticed anything major aside from my fingers being puffy for the first couple of weeks, though that has now resolved. It has brought my heart rate down, too, which makes me actually feel LESS tired (a common side effect of beta blockers is tiredness). I sleep better, too.

Plus, my BP has stayed a calm cool 110/65 or so! (Much better than 150s/90s!!!) And my headaches are gone....

I took it for about 2 weeks and it made me so tired I was sleeping all the time . To say nothing about it took my normal standing heartrate from the upper 50's to like 44 so I was off that stuff in a hurry .

I took Verapamil for 5 or 6 years but that was several years back. I didn't have any sideffects with it but then it just lost it's effectiveness and I had to switch. I do remember that you are not supposed to drink grapefuit juice while taking it.
Good Luck

Thank you for your replys! I've been on toprol for over a year now and have suffered from severe headaches, dizziness all the time, troubles swollowing, tremors, the list goes on. I am currently suppose to wean off of the toprol and switch to verapamil for the headaches and high blood pressure. But this is day three of half dose of toprol and I feel a difference with my headaches not quite as intense. And my head seems to be clearing a bit too. Has me thinking maybe for the last year it has always been the toprol. I'm not quite convinced that I really need to be on blood pressure meds anyways. I'm only 31. My BP goes up and down. I think I am going to call the dr to see if maybe I can try to go completely off of the meds. Will keep you guys posted. Keep those toprol experiences/side effects coming please. Thanks everyone!

i took toprol xl for 3 yrs, it caused me to have severe headaches, back pain and swollen fingers. I finally stop taking it this spring. The verapamil i am on it now @ 240 mg. I've been on verapamil for 5 yrs. At first I just had occasional bad dreams. Now I have no side effects from it. I also take avapro and hctz for bp. They all work well, but some trouble with the avapro. Good luck to you.

The dr wants me to switch to the verapamil. Ultimately ending up taking 4 pills a day. For a total of 480 mg! To me this seems like a very high dose. I'm not nor have I ever been a big pill popper. I do take thyroid pills(levoxyl) but of course I couldn't live without those. But I can control what else goes into my body. My chiro said she'd monitor my BP. So I am going to go completely, or at least try,off the toprol. Of course I did leave a message for the dr. to see what he thinks. Will keep you posted. Thanks for the replys = )

 Hi Lisaa, I understand totally what you feel. However, I thought I was doing good because all my lab tests came back with positive results. Now today I go to the dr and find that this last test result shows, my ldl is too high, my bp went back up to 153/84, and my a1c test is back up to 7.0. I guess I need to stay on my prescribed meds and endure the side effects. I am diabetic with thyroid disorder (levothroid pills), hbp (verapamil, hctz, avapro), and high cholesterol (zetia ). I just know I will have back pain from the avapro and the zetia. There goes my walking regiment  . The verapamil side effects will disappear in about 2 to 3 wks and for me it wasn't too bad. I never use to even take and asprin and now I'm on all these drugs. :nono: I hope you can avoid the hbp meds, but if not welcome to my world. Good luck to you.

Yes I have been taking Toprol XL 50mg daily along with demedex, and hyzaar...The toprol was the most recent added medication and I noticed a big difference in my energy level right away..I had none! I have recently been fighting the tiredness by making myself do things to stay active and it seems to be working..All I wanted to do for awhile was sleep all the time.

I take Toprol XL 50mg a day for about 7 months now. At first it made me feel like "bird poop on a fence" as one member said in a past post. No energy for about a month.
This decreased, and now feel like myself again. Some people never get pass that tired feeling while others do. Just depends how your body handles it.

has anyone else been told that with the new law??? the doctor can only give you a prescription for hbp medicine for 3 months at a time.

I started on 50mg of Toprol XL about 5 years ago and it seemed to work well for awhile. As time has progressed my GP had to keep increaseing my dosage to keep my BP down. I am now on 100mg twice a day and my GP wants to increase it to 100mg 3 time a day. I told her that the Toprol is not working and I feel like the walking dead. My fingers and feet puff up a lot also weight gain. Did I mention weight gain. Vision problems, headaches, light headed are also some of the fine things I've experienced since I started on Toprol. My GP seems to operate under the theory, "More is better!" I see a Cardiologist soon and I will let him know I want off Toprol. I have weened myself down to 100mg of Toprol a day and 120mg of varapamil. BP is about the same but do feel a liitle like I have adrenal rushes once in awhile.

Get a 2nd opinion. It made a world of difference for me. I take altenolol instead of Toprol & it has much less side-effects for me. Combined with Lotrel I average 119/69, which might be low at times for me, but it beats how I felt before. Toprol, Altace+++ s**k imo, I think that any md should do CBC, T-4 & a metabolic panel before prescribing these terrible b/p drugs.
