My dermatologist referred me to a specialist because i have this tiny black spot on the side of my nose near my eye. Because of the location, she didn't want to remove it herself. I saw the dr. today and he said he would like it off , he will remove it in the office no problem. He said it could be perfectly fine or contain basil cells........I was concerned . he didn't really seem that worried. He said if it comes back with those cells he will have to remove more tissue and examine it.....sounds scary to me!!.
When i went to make the appt for the removal they gave me the first week in July....Wow, that is a long time to wait..He said, i didn't have to have it done right away....Hope that is a good sign.. Should i be really concerned.??????What does basil cells mean? thanks bride527

Hi Basel cell cancer is a form of skin cancer. It is very slow growing and is not life threatening. I had two removed 6 months ago and they had been there for about 1 1/2 years. I did not know what they were. I had a malignant melanoma removed 5 months ago. That is the most dangerous skin cancer there is. I just found out yesterday that I have another basal cell that is going to be removed june 22. It is on my chest. If you have to have it surgically removed make sure your dr does mohs surgery. It is a surgery that they do on the face and neck so the scar will not be as big. The most importannt thing now is to wear sunblock and go to your derm ;) . for skin checks. Good luck and try not to worry about basel cell. The nurse told me if you were going have skin cancer basel cell is the kind to have.

Thanks for that info.....Again the spot is soo tiny..I hope that is a good thing.....I am not too concerned because he didn't seem in a rush to remove it but does want it off my nose.. I go to the dermatologist yearly and everything looks good......I found this little spot myself actually...So Basil cell means it is contained to that one area?
He said if the biospsy comes back positive he will have to remove more ...is that what they do in this case? thanks...bride527

If it comes back positive for basal cell he will probably perform the mohs surgery since it is on your face. He will take more till he gets clear margins.

Yes, basal cells can spread, just slower. There are also different types of basal cells, might want to look up the sub types. Some sub types do grow more aggresively and are harder to get rid of.

Mohs is a procedure in which the dr will take small slices until all of the margins are clear. Some say there is less scarring but my experience has been large scars that need time to heal, then they heal beautifully. I have had mohs twice and was shocked to see the length of the scar afterwards. The spot had only been growing 3-4 mos. I had a more aggressive sub type so I think he took some extra to make sure he cleared it all.

What does your black spot look like. I have a couple of these on the side of my nose I am now worried about? Just curious.

It is a tiny black ***, i thought it was eye makeup at first.....When he examined me he said he wanted to remove it and that made me nervous.....but i am sure it will be okay. I take such good care of my skin....so we'll see what happens. Again, it is really tiny smaller than a pencil point and onthe side of my nose near my eye........bride527

I've been reading your posts,I have a couple really tiny almost black spots also.they are on my stomach area, they almost look like black freckles. Is this something I should get checked out?My dermatologist just found a spot on the side of my face that he said was pre-cancerous "something",he burned it off and said it shouldn't come back, but it was light brown in color, these are almost black.any advice?

All I know is this thing is so small and black and I am the one who pointed it out to my dermatologist. She missed it.....She said because of where it is (side of my nose close to my eye)........i should have a plastic surgeon remove it.....so he is removing it on July 9th...Can't believe i have to wait that long.....he said not to lose sleep over it so i am sure it will be fine..I think they like to remove these spots if they looks "funny" to them...Better off than leaving them on.I know they want to check them out so that is why the remove them just to make sure.....If yours was burned off , i am sure it was fine.. did he biopsy it??? bride527
