Each time I see porcelain veneers on Extreme Makeover they look to me like piano keys. Big, bright white and square.
Has anyone else noticed it? Sometimes the teeth look so large the person can barely close his or her lips. Does this nice, experienced dentist not know that natural teeth are:
VARIOUS SIZES AND SHAPES
A NICE, SOFT WHITE. NOT GLARING WHITE.
Our local cosmetic dentist does all his office worker's teeth and I mean to tell you they look Real ! I just do not understand it.

I totally agree with you! Every time I watch that show I always think that the teeth, although a hugh improvement over what most patients had, look fake. And you're right about them looking too big.

I think, but am not certain, that if you start with a patient with teensy teeth you can end up with a nice look. But if the patient has big rocks for teeth? Then, they need to be warned!! LOL
My husband's daughter in law has veneers and they're nice and small. How did I know she got them done? The color. lol

I don't watch the show much. I know that Dr. Dorfman is one of the best well known dentist around. Not everyone has then kind of teeth and smile for small teeth. Sometimes that is done to close spaces or make the teeth longer for a better look. I really don't know. I cases i have seen on the show looked good to me. I have also meet one of the people who had veeners done on the show and they looked perfectly natural. Everyone of course notice the color. When someone does this the what that white smile. I am sure that the patient has a choice in this process. The patient is in temps for awhile while the veeners are being handmade at a lab. When the patients is put in the veeners they are told that temps are made to look like the final product even color. So if there is something they don't like then they say something before the final product is seated. Hopefully they don't wait to longer and the veeners get made first. I will have to watch the show a few more teeth and if i can find out what you are talking about. The few times i have watched i haven't noticed. I do know that Dr. Dorfman is very well known and suppose to be one of the best dentist.

What is Jeff Dorfman's involvement with Xtreme Makeover? Just curious! (don't have access to US TV)

(Hah, I can't believe I am bumping up such an old topic--I've never done that on a message board before. But since this show is still on, I don't think it's too bad. ;) )
My gosh, you are so right! Dr. Dorfman is one of the most well-known cosmetic dentists, and he is supposed to be one of the best. For starters, I don't care for his attitude sometimes because he can be rather rude to people with terrible teeth.
But more importantly, his work looks terrible. I'm sure veneers can be made to look more natural that what he does. The people on EM who have had veneers usually end up with dreadfully fake-looking teeth. Granted, it's a huge improvement from what they had before. I wish they were given more natural looking teeth though. And the patient shouldn't have to say what they don't like about the teeth. An experienced dentist should know better. Besides, these people started out so badly, they are greatful to have any improvement,--even if it is fake-looking.
Let me also add I am angry with this show and how people with poor jaw alignment/poor aligned teeth get those veneers and usually cheek implants or chin implants to bring their face in better balance when they should have had JAW repositioning and braces. Oooh, but then that would take an average of 1-2 years instead of masking the problem with a mere 2 months worth of recovery from COSMETICS. How extreme.

The lab or labs Dorfman uses does the work. I would assume that making all the teeth the same shape would be less tedious and much faster than making the side teeth look like the original or appropriate shape.
I have had dentists who have switched labs for many different problems. They tell my husband, "I had to go with a new lab after I saw those teeth."
I know 2 ladies who have veneers; both have fantastically shaped ones; better than the Dorfman lab work. But--I can tell they're fake by the translucency of them. And the color is too uniform.
It's a hard job to do it correctly, I guess

That's interesting. I am quick to blame the dentist as if he designs and creates the teeth himself, which is certainly not true. At least some dentists know when to switch labs. And you're right that a row of veneers, even if they have better shape to them, will always have a fake look to them. At least some dentists know when to get the shape done nicely. Why Dr. Dorfman thinks his patients end up with great looking teeth, I will never know. And he has such a great reputation...

it's probably a combination of his loveable nature and sweet face and that he was chosen or chose to peddle DiVinci porcelain veneers. In this unfair and biased world in which we live, good looks and loveable charm can go a long way and sell a lot of products. And I think he is one total sweetheart. :) Of course, his credentials didn't hurt :D
My daughter, 35, simply has her teeth bonded. The guy is an artist. He uses the whiteist white bond he can make up and she has this blazing white smile
at less cost, less time in the chair and no grinding down of the teeth. It lasts about 7 yrs on average but it isn't pushed like veneers due to the lower cost.

Well, having had this procedure done to 6 upper front teeth, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, done by any dentist!!!! Don't get me wrong, they look good, but I'm wearing them and they are too big and touching my lower lip. When I immediately complained about that, the dentist had the gall to say, well your real teeth were actually too small.
They don't tell you what you are going to have to go through for this procedure, or tell you half-truths not to scare you. It is one horrendous procedure to sit through for hours!!!!
And when you are all done, THEN they tell you what you can't eat or bite into!
Exactly one year later, one of mine fell off. I have a second appointment with a dentist to see about dentures. The first one I went to two weeks ago, I didn't like (he was pushing implants instead of dentures).....didn't like the way he avoided answering questions. If I have to talk with 100 dentists til I find one that will talk honestly, I will before anyone touches my mouth again. Sorry if I sound like I am venting but I get angry when I talk about what was done to me.
Please, don't ever consider veneers!!!!

I think your daughter's procedure is defintely the better choice over veneers, if someone is able to choose between the two.

Yikes! That is terrible you've had to endure this. I wish everyone considering veneers knew everything they were getting into and would know there are stories like yours. It astonishes me your dentist would dismiss your problem of having too large of veneers by saying your real teeth were too small. What the--?! I hope you can get a solution you can be happy with very soon. Good luck.

Thanks Cash.
It is one horrible process people have no idea about. The shaving down of the real teeth is just one step taking many hours. If you are lucky, they will cover whats left of your teeth with a bonding. However, the teeth have been so shocked and all the protective surface removed that when the novacaine wears off you are in major pain anywhere the air can get to all the exposed nerves in your teeth. I survived the wait til the next visit with dental wax purchased at the drugstore and globbed it onto all the teeth, front and back plus pain pills. Of course you can't eat with that in your mouth and if you play with it, which your tongue wants to do, you will loosen the lumps of wax. Oh it was a nightmare......and that was only the beginning and it took 4 1/2 hrs sitting in the dentist chair for just 6 teeth.

I am truly sorry this happened to you. We have a dentist in town who specializes in veneers; ALL his assistants have them and they ALL look perfect. His receptionist Loves hers. I went up there once and this lady had just come off the chair and was RAVING AND RAVING right in the waiting room after seeing her veneers. HE charges $612 per tooth.
Is it possible that the dentist you used put on veneers that are simply too long? And that someone else could put on smaller ones?
I saw a makeover show and this woman came out after hers were done and she had been crying. She loved hers but I could tell she had really been through something bad. My daughter has bonding and I love her teeth. They're not as perfect as veneers should be but they're very white and look great and she says it doesn't hurt a bit.

<these are not permanent and that the littlest pressure can break them.>
Oh, that's encouraging. "The littlest pressure" means a marshmallow can break them. I'll make an appt today!
<I would rather align teeth with braces, do gum surgery, and whiten the teeth over the vaneers any day.>
Why is that?

People don't realize that the real tooth underneath is ground down to accommodate the veneer. That in itself is major trauma to the tooth and exposes all its nerves and takes hours. If you are lucky, you get a dentist who will try to coat those damaged teeth with bonding stuff and send you home to wait 3-4 weeks til your veneers are made. I used tons of dental wax to help overcome the pain that whole time. Veneers are only glued on the fronts so they are not stable like a crown or cap. Mine are pretty just too large and touch my lower lip which is totally annoying. I wasn't done my plan to get a partial plate to have upper molars on my right side so I would have someplace to chew......I have lower right side teeth. So I have been gently trying to chew with 2 natural upper teeth and 2 of the veneers this past year.......afraid to go back to any dentist after this horrible experience of many visits and many needles. Did I mention, all those needles gave me nerve damage up by my nose on the left front side? A year later and it hurts up there.
