Hi all,
I would like to know if herpes is considered an automimmune disease. I know that other viruses that lie dormant are, like HIV and Lymes.
Thanks in advance.

autoimmune would actually attack the immune system, as HIV does to the "T" cell, which helps fight off infections.
Herpes effects the skin cells and nerve cells. it reproduces in the skin cells, thus the rash, and lays dormant in the nerve cell.
Your immune system does a good job of fighting off the herpes infection at the skin level. Which is why the sores disappear.

Thanka Karlthebunny, I suppose what I am asking is having herpes a detriment to one's overall health - or immune system support suppose they get another disease, would having herpes, like lymes which also lays dormant, make it harder for the immune system to fight? (phew,. sorry - hard to describe my question! hope you understand ;)
Thanks again,
Randi

No, but you may get a herpes ob when your immune system is too busy fighting another disease to keep the virus dormant. Thus the term "cold sore." But h does not compromise your immune system.
