Hi.................I've got an appointment with my dentist tomorrow for a couple of fillings and she has also recommended the use of periochips - does anyone have any comments on the use of these and whether I may get any side effects? I'm a bit of a dental phobic and it's taken a lot of courage to agrre to have the fillings and a scale and polish doen - I really don't want to have anything else done that may hurt!!!!!! :)

Periochips (arestin) is only used to treat disease of the gums that is compromising the tooth and bone surrounding it. It is not just slipped in after a filling. First the area has to be deep scaled (rootplaning) then the chips are placed. Most insurance companies don't cover the periochip. Find out if yours does. I am not sure how they feel, I just know you are numb when they are placed and hopefully this will get rid of the bacteria that is causing the problem.

Thanks Ladybird..............had the fillings yesterday - the thorough cleaning and periochips have been scheduled for 2 weeks time. There are definite signs of problems with bone loss so these woud seem to make sense...........I just have never heard of them before. The insurance thing doesn't matter as I'm in the UK where most of us don't have dental insurance and we have to pay for treatment.
