I just went to my dentist and was informed I must undergo this procedure which sounds awful and more so because I am in the midst of trying to sort out other medical issues that has involved MRI's etc and I am beginning to feel that at 27 my warranty has expired!!!!
Has anyone had this done and have thoughts on the pain and recovery factors?

Hi I'm going to have that type of graft tomorrow along with gum surgery. My perio is going to add gum tissue to cover exposed root on a couple of teeth. He is not charging me for the procedure since he is already doing so much in one session (adding 4 implants, gum surgery etc.) I read about the procedure before, and it does not always work. We will see. I can keep you posted on how mine is coming along. Marti

Hi TIA, there is no need to be scared of having bone grafts and implants done. Believe me, i feel more pain when I get my teeth cleaned. NO joke. If you get the conscious sedation IV, you know every thing that goes on and you can answer questions, but you feel pretty good. I had 2 sinus augmentations, 7 extractions, 10 bone grafts, and 7 implants all done the same day back in february of this year (5 1/2 hrs surgery) . I had no probleam after, only took 2 pain pills after the surgery. It was a little sore and swollen around my nose because of the sinus augmentations, but really no big deal. The 7 implants (plus another implant he will place in a few months since there was not anough bone there) are to replace all the teeth on top of my mouth, and while the bone grows around the implants, I wear an upper denture. NO problem there except the fact that I hate the upper plastic roof. Tomorrow's surgery should be a piece of cake compared to the first one. I'll be happy to answer your questions about all these procedures if you tell me what you are having done. The main thing is that is is totally painless, )I can't even really say I was uncomfortable) unless your surgeon does not know what he is doing, so it is important to check his references out, like asking for patient's names and if it is another dentist who does the restoration of the implants (the bridges and the crowns), ask for references and before and after pictures. You will be spending a lot of money and a lot of time, so do your home work. What state do you live in ??? Hope that helped a bit, I'll let you know tomorrow evening or the next day how it was. Marti

Had my surgery today along with the gingival grafts. Don't if the grafts will work and cover the roots of these 2 teeth I mentioned before, right now all I see are stiches. Had 3 implants placed bottom molars instead of 4, since there was not enough bone there for a good anchor, so the perio. packed syntetic bone in the site, and we will wait a few months to place the 4th implant. There was no pain during surgery, no swelling afterward, and in order for him not to hit that bottom nerve and cause damage, he drilled a small amount to place the implants, took x-ray to make sure he was not getting close to the nerve, drilled some more, took another x-ray and continued that way little by little to make sure the nerver would not be altered. When the nerve is damaged, you can be numbed for months in the area, and drool for months also, that happened to one of my friends and I did not want it to happen to me. The gum surgery was pretty uncomfortable for a few hours after, but a couple of pain killers took care of that. Hope that helped whoever will go through the procedure. Marti

Thanks Martid its nice to know things aren't as bad as I been imagining. I'm glad yesterday went well for you...I keep trying to tell myself that but nerves are just taking over to a point I can't eat or sleep.
If you would be so kind to read my post entitled "Please help scared periodontal disease & implants (long)" That explains where I am now...LIMBO LOL....
Once again thank you for the information and your kindness.

Thank,
I have to have this done but it found out this weekend I have a brain aneurysm so that surgery is 6/22 and the poor unlucky gum will have to wait--priorities :)
