Hi,
I have found out that my lower wisdom teeth are impacted and one has developed a cyst. I am off to the dental surgeon to discuss the procedure. Here is the major question. I have never had surgery or been anesthetized in my life. I have had fillings done under lidocaine with no major problem. In general I am a very anxious person and this scares me a bit. Could you please share your experiences with me. What type of anesthesia did you have? How was your experience? Most importantly what type of side effects did you have? Is the IV sedation going to make me sick? I have no idea what to expect and am very anxious. My dentist has recommended IV sedation.

Scared and Worried,
R

I would suggest against the IV sedation, honestly. I just had mine out this morning, and all I had was novacaine. Now here's where my experience probably differs from most. Embarrasingly, it seems that my wisdom teeth were starting to make some of my other teeth begin to decay...All four of my teeth had broken thru the gums, which helped make everything easier. Had I had any teeth that were impacted, maybe the sensation or feeling would have been different, hence allowing for IV sedation or the gas...I think the gas would be the best bet though for your procedure..

It's normal to be a little nervous, but you're not alone- and trust me things will go much smoother and easier than you think they will. Getting the IV twilight sleep will make things real easy and your experience in the surgeon's office go well. You won't even know what happened and you'll wake up (with a numb face) when it's all over. Everyone has different experiences with the drugs, of course, but in my wisdom teeth case I went to sleep within seconds of the doc starting the little IV and once I woke up I had little or no negative side effects. I wasn't even really tired. Try not to worry to much, but we're here to answer questions if you need it. Good Luck.

I had all four of my wisdom teeth taken out on May 15th. Only one of them was impacted. I just had local anesthesia so I was awake the whole time.. didn't feel a thing. The worse part is the recovery process! I actually developed a dry socket and that was extremely painful. I didn't bruise or swell up though! :D

Happy to say that everything is pretty much back to normal now. I'm not taking any painkillers anymore and I'm eating normal foods again (even though little pieces get stuck in the holes  )

Don't worry about it too much.. it really wasn't nearly as bad as I expected it to be.. and I'm sooooo relieved that its over :)

Springarn- Don't worry at all. I can relate to you since I have trouble with anxiety and panic attacks occasionally. I'm 21 and had four impacted wisdom teeth out 2 years ago. I was nervous also since I had never been in surgery or put to sleep. Heck, I have never even broken a bone or had stitches (knock on wood!!). I would DEFINITELY go for the IV sedation. It was so easy. They just put the IV in my right arm and a blood pressure cuff on the left. My oral surgeon was real nice and told me to have sweet dreams as I drifted off for only about 20 minutes. That's only how long it takes for them to get them all out! It's unreal. Now I really don't remember walking to the recovery area at ALL but they told me I did walk there. I just had a bunch of gauze in my mouth and the nurse helped me walk out to the car and my mom drove me home. I was fully alert and eating yogurt as soon as I got home. You can do it. Try to relax, it's real quick.

There is no bigger baby than me when it comes to dentists. I went in Tues. as I've said on other messages and got nine extracted with only novacaine. I was so shocked when he was done because I honestly couldn't feel a thing when he was working. The only thing I experience was a kind of tugging when he pulls it out but still didn't hurt a bit. He had to give me bout 7 needles to numb it and that's what usually scares me but this dentist was very good and I honestly felt no pain and told my dentist later he was very good. Course now I'm recuperating which is a lot harder than getting them out but even that isn't bad. I once had laughing gas where they put the mask on you a couple of years ago and that worked like a charm - you still are awake and know what's happening but you just don't care. Sorry this is so long but I've also had the anesthesia and it went just fine
