Been one month since I got a soft liner put in my dentures. Went back today.I addressed the issue of my teeth and gums showing so much also.He took some more impressions using some blue and white stuff, made a new liner and did some more adjustments on them. When he put them in my mouth I told him that they hurt in certain spots, and he went out to supposedly file or trim them down, whatever.Three times we tried them and all three times they still hurt in the same spots that I had told him about. He said that my gums were obviously still tender and put a bunch of adhesive on the dentures and put them in my mouth. My mouth felt like it was full of clay. After I got my soft liner a month ago they felt so comfortable, and I haven't had to use any adhesive at all to keep them in.Since I got this other liner put in them today, my sides of my gums on the top feel like someone is sticking pins in them. They are pinching so bad.As far as the way they looked before with too much gum showing, he added more material to the base of the plate and they still look the same on the top. The bottom ones look better though.Don't know if it is normal to have pain after getting this liner, if I should give it a few days, or go back in the morning.Any input my anybody would be most helpful. Thanks

Muppet,
Do you know if you had a hard or soft liner done???
I had a hard relign done last week, and have been uncomfortable since then.
My dentist did tell me that a soft relign adds a cushion, while a hard relign is unforgiving, so I might have sore spots, etc. But he also said that if I had any problems at all, I should come in for adjustments. I too have the gummy issue - as well as a crease between my upper lip and nose when I smile - kind of gives a horsey look!!! He took impressions and said that he would probably need to add acrylic to the top of the denture to close the gap so I don't have the crease. I will go back on Friday and hopefully he will be able to take care of it....the gummy issue was taken care of when he did the hard relign.
I would address the issue with your dentist....mine keeps telling me that I should never be uncomfortable in any way and that everything can be fixed...
let me know what happens.

I had a soft liner done a month ago, and it was very comfortable. Yesterday he put a hard liner in them. He did tell me that if they bother me a bunch to come back in. I put them in this morning and put a very small amount of adhesive on them and they are not as sore. Slightly on one side on the top.He had so much adhesive on them yesterday it was unreal. After I had the soft liner done last month I didn't have to use adhesive at all to hold them in, and now I have to use it again. I thought each time I went back they should be fitting snugger, seems as though these are looser then before.Do you still have to use adhesive? He added material to the edges of my top plate also yesterday.I still have a gummy look, but I don't have any creases so to speak.Watch tomorrow morning I'll wake up with them. Ha Ha!!

I called the dentist earlier and they said it was a temporary liner they put in them yesterday.Since they are not killing me like they were yesterday, just slightly sore I'm going to stick it out through the weekend and if they get worse by Tuesday next week I will go back to have them do something about it then.

Decided to go back to the dentist today, because the more I wore these dentures the more my gums hurt.Felt like they were actually getting raw. They shaved a little more off and off I went.No adhesive to hold them in like yesterday, and not a bit of the pain. I sure didn't want to go through Memorial Day weekend hurting. What a relief!!

GOOD!!! Glad to hear you got your problems resolved. It would really be awful to have to suffer over the holiday weekend. Glad your denture is fitting much better now. Keep us posted. Dena

Comfort is the main thing, but I'm still also concerned with the appearance of these things. It seems as though every time I go back for an adjusment the top plate looks lower and lower.Last night I noticed that now when I smile, only the top upper half of the teeth show along with the gums. The bottom half of my top teeth go down below my lip. It's like there going lower and lower.I kept thinking it was because my gums still needed to shrink more, but now I don't know what to think

It could be that if you wear a lower denture also you are guarding that part of your mouth more in an attempt to make sure the denture does not wander out of place. It takes time to teach all of the muscles of the face and mouth what to do with those big things being shoved in there all the time. The mouths normal reaction to foreign bodies is to chew them up, swallow them or spit them out.

I don't understand what you're saying.Explain a little more.

What I am trying to say is that the lower denture does not stay in place with suction and it relies on your training your muscles to hold it in place. When they are new the mouth feels like it has big foreign objects in it- which it does and it does not want them there. Just the action of moving your mouth or tongue will tend to displace the lower denture. Your lips are trying to hold it in place on your gums so they are stretching to cover them, they are not stopping at the end of the lower teeth but continuing to cover the uppers. This is not unusual behavior. It all takes time for your mouth to get used to having the plates in. Try to relax when you are wearing them, and I am sure some of what you are seeing is being caused by being so self conscious.
Hope this helps.

My bottom plate doesn't come lose at all.It stays very secure even when I'm eating. For the first few weeks before I got my soft liner it would flip flop around in my mouth while eating, but after I got the soft liner last month they fit very tight.I don't use any effort to keep the top or the bottom in. They both fit tight ,but the top teeth are beginning to look like I have none. They look like they've been sawed off, even with a slight smile.People that I see in public have told me that the plate hangs so low my teeth should be up where the gum is.The teeth look like they're dissapearing.

Hi Muppet, I think there is something your dentist is doing to your denture that is not right. Maybe too much liner material accumulated there and the ldenture is getting too bulky.I don't think the muscles in your mouth have much to do with holding the top plate in place. Suction does that. It simply should not keep coming down like this.
I hope your dentist can explain this to you. Good luck Marti

I agree with you. Sometime next week I will go and discuss it with them. Thank you

I agree as well....
it sounds like you have a build up of soft liner material which is making your denture hang too low. Should be easy to fix with a trip to the dentist.
Mine just fixed the crease that I had between my upper lip and nose this morning. He said in over 25 years of practice he's only had to do this a few times.....he added acrylic to the denture which gives me more lip support and the problem is fixed. My point is that in most cases, things can be fixed, even when they are unlikely or odd problems.
Let us know what happens with your dental visit.

Hey Val, glad your doc could fix your problem. I've had all my surgery done yesterday, today I am a little swollen, my fault I did not use the ice packs, I guess I'm done for a few months, except for removal of the stitches next wk. Now I'm waiting for the bone to grow. I could have had the swan job with all the money I've spent so far. I hope it's worth it at the end. So did your dentist do the hard reline for you??. I did tell you I had a permanent done about 3 wks ago. It fits really well. No glue or nothing. But I stilll hate the upper plastic. If it was not for the roof part, I probably would not have had the implants put in, but that top really borthers me. By the end of the day, I'm ready to kick it out like some tight shoe or something. Later Marti
