Had trouble with feeling tired for the first few hours of each day. So had a sleep study about a month ago where they put a CPAP on me half way through. This worsened my sleepiness. Started feeling sleepy and lightheaded all day (started CPAP about a week and a half ago with no change). Did anyone else ever feel worse after trying CPAP?

Sorry to have to ask, but what is CPAP?

I also use a CPAP. They put me on it for the first time at the sleep study. When I woke up, I was a total wreck. I was so out of it and so tired, I couldn't believe they'd let me drive home like that. It took a while (some say a month) to get used to it and you have lots of sleep to catch up on. Give it a while longer, or talk to your doctor.

Elise, a CPAP is a continuous positive airway pressure machine... it keeps the airways open so the body doesn't get oxygen deprived. People with sleep apnea frequently wake up because their passages get obstructed and breathing stops and they become oxygen deprived. This triggers something or other to bring us back to a higher level of consciousness (or actual waking) to trigger breathing to continue. Something like that. Dealing with pretty major brain fog right now, so I might not have the particulars correct.

Graces, thanks for the reply and support. I'll try to go longer. How long did it take for you to start feeling rested? How did you feel up to that time? (the service providing the CPAP said he had never run into anyone who felt worse) (also am trying a new one which feel more comfortable. Again thanks

Wow - this was great info. Had not heard of it taking such a long time before. I think I would've given up within 1 month. Could certainly help fight against becoming depressed. Hope others adjusting to CPAP read this, they will surely be grateful to you. Double thanks.

From my experience on cpap and working in the sleep lab, I've found that it's either the air pressure or the mask that makes it hard to adjust. Try the ramp feature on your machine, or if your mask is uncomfortable...talk to your home healthcare provider and try a different one.

I went through 6 masks before I found one I liked. I recommend one called the Breeze.
