We had lunch at a pizza buffet today and about 4-5 hours later my teenage son said he was so thirsty and could not get enough water (he is 15). I checked his bg and it was 135. That seemed slightly high to me? He is adopted, so the heredity factor is not in effect here. ;)
I will probably test his fasting in the morning. Just wanted to check and see if the normal ranges are the same for teens, though.
Thanks,
Ramona

Ramona -
Pizza takes a VERY long time to be absorbed by the body. 135 may be slightly elevated, but you should do a few fasting tests on your son, as well as another few 2-hour post-prandial tests.
Did the pizza contain meat? The meats they use on pizza are very salty and that, combined with the salts in the cheese and sauce, may have caused his thirst.
But you're very wise to stay on top of this!

Ramona,
AFAIK, yes, the ranges are the same for teenagers and adults. As Ruth said, it's good that you do watch this. Even if its not high for the fasting test that you do, the 135 mg/dL, 4 hrs after eating and provided nothing else was eaten is indicative of a problem. I remember well the thirst that came.
After I was diagnosed with Type II, I used to jokingly tell my friends that "pizza was a diabetics nightmare." I said this because of the response that Ruth described--sugars elevated for hours afterwards. Pizza was once one of my favorite foods. I have not eaten it in over a year now.

Thanks! I was going to test this morning, but didn't get to him before he started eating. Oh well, there is always another day! ;)
