A couple months ago my daughter got very sick. I took her to the doctor and they did an xray. She had pneumonia. In the xray it showed a curve in the lower part of her spine which the doctor said was scoliosis (sp) Of course with her having pneumonia he said we would have to deal with her back later. I am wondering is it possible that she was just standing funny when she got the xray taken, because no one has noticed it before now, or should i take her back to the doc. and get it looked at again. She had a fever of 104.8 when she got the xray taken, she could barely stand up.
thanks for reading

Hi, the queen. I don't know if it's possible she was standing crooked but I would definately take her to see an orthopedist for further evaluation. Get copies of those x-rays and bring them with you. The ortho will probably want to take his own x-rays to be sure.

If your daughter has scoliosis, it is very important to monitor it. Please do not let this go - have it checked! (My mother ignored a notice sent from my school after a scoliosis screening and I ended up needing surgery.) I don't want to alarm you - a lot of people have a slight curve and nothing changes. But some people's curves will progress. A lot of times things are found when your looking for something else and as in other diseases, it's better to catch it early.

Hope your daughter is feeling better. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif

Hi there,
I agree with Renee, get it looked at.
I also was ignored in Junior High having a scoliosis screening but my nurse never contacted my parents. I ended up having surgery also. If she is eight and has a curve now, it is very likely to progress. I don't think it is possible that she was just standing crooked.

Good Luck!
Christina

27 years old
1993: T1 to L1 fusion due to scoliosis at age 17
2000: Tore and ruptured L4 L5 & L5 S1-it finally got better after about a year. Did really well for about a year.
June 2002: Had a relapse and tore disc again. It is going on a year and my disc pain has subsided now I am faced with facet joint and bone problems restricting my movement.
Not sure what is next!
Still waiting to go into remission again but I think the damage is done!!
Current doctor say to wait it out.
Going for second opinion in July.

------------------
Two level laminectomy fusion L5-S1 & L2-3 done on 12/6/02.
Fifteen inch scar from the very top of butt crack (sorry), to the bra line.
BAK cages, rods & screws.(Titanium)
My pelvic bone was used for grafting.
Praying that the other two discs in between, won't have to be fused later, as I was told it was a possibility, due to the other two discs in between, not being in that great of shape.
Doc didn't want to fuse four levels, unless it is really necessary.
I would hate to repeat the surgery, as the recovery period, is so very painful.
I also have a free fragment in my T11-12 area, that I'm still refusing surgery for, at this point in time.
That surgery is way too dangerous for me to consider, until if affects my being able to walk.

Ditto - Not a good age to have Scoliosis. Please have the child looked at by a specialist. Your child is growing and, if true, the condition will be magnified as the child grows. Enforce good posture habits and have this monitored closely. I hope she was simply standing funny. Good luck!

Thanks for all your replies. She has been growing like a weed in the past year. i think i will get her in to the doc first thing next week. I cannot go to a specialist unless my doctor refers me there otherwise insurance wont pay for it. But if she does have scoliosis and she does need special medical attention then they should refer me with no problem. I wanted to say thanks for all the advice. I had no idea scoliosis caused so much trouble with the body. I will keep you updated as to what the doc says.

thequeen, I wish you and your child the best. Its a good story in the making when these issues get addressed early. Don't allow your child to eventually become a poster on boards like these! Keep well! Read up on Scoliosis, there are quite a few recent discoveries surrounding it. Our future leaders need to be pain free while they are taking care of us and ours!
