My sister just told me that she is diagnosed of becoming a diabetic and she has high blood pressure! what food should she eat? what exercise should she do? what kind of vitamin pills are good for her? she is about 50 lbs overweight..so i want her to eat healthy and drop some weights too~ I won't let her use any kind of drugs..just because she wants to get pregnant~ I want to make a healthy menu for her so she can be healthier! and i want to prevent her from having diabetes! i suggest that she should eat more normally (3 meals a day) and don't eat in between meals~ if she gets hungry..she'll have a stomach cram..so eating fruits should be helpful~ what kind of fruits, vegetable, meat..etc..etc should she eat? what kind of food she should cut off from?

I'd recommend a low carb diet that would likely result in weight loss plus lower her blood sugar. Snacks between meals are a good idea, but make it a piece of cheese on Melba toast or some other protein plus carb instead of fruit, which is high in sugar and avoided by many diabetics. Apples and berries are not so bad. Vegetables should be non-starchy such as broccoli, green beans, and asparagas. Avoid corn, carrots and peas. Chicken and fish are good choices plus lean meat.

Foods she should avoid are things like potatoes, rice, pasta, white bread, baked goods, most fruits, colas and anything containing sugar.

Your sister should ask her dr for a referral to a dietician, if she is pre-diabetic. I work closely with my dietician to plan meals to help me keep my glucose and cholesterol low. If you sister is trying to get pregnant, her needs maybe a little different than those of us that are beyond child-bearing yrs. I am diabetic now for 12 yrs, i eat some fruits and corn too. I am continuing weight loss about 4 or 5 lbs a month. I use portion control, low fat, and at least 5 to 6 veggies per day. Todate, I have lost about 50 to 60 lbs. Exercise is almost a must for diabetics. I walk no less that 3 to 4 miles a day, everyday. There is a poster on this board that gave me even better incite into my diabetes than my dietician. JD made me understand what BMR WAS AND HOW it could help me with my carbs. Now I use that formular during meal planning and my a1c has dropped.IF YOU GO TO MY QUESTION" HOW MANY CARBS SHOULD A DIABETIC EAT" on this board. YOU will see a lot of great suggestions from. Good luck to your sister and I hope she can prevent the road to full blown diabetes. ;)

Excuse me, but I take exception to your statement "I won't let her use any kind of drugs..just because she wants to get pregnant" If she wants to get pregnant, she MUST get her diabetes under control BEFORE she gets pregnant, and that may mean using insulin. Getting pregnant while blood sugars are not under the strictest control has serious ramifications for the baby! Diet and exercise alone may not be enough, especially if she's anxious to get pregnant soon. Also, since she's already diabetic, she will most likely HAVE to take insulin during her pregnancy, but may be able to get off of it after the baby is born.

If she's planning to get pregnant, it would be best for her to consult with an obstetrician and an endocrinoligist BEFORE attempting to conceive to find out what she needs to do.

A few other comments:
3 meals per day with no snacks is not the correct way for a diabetic to eat. Diabetics typically need to eat more often throughout the day - the goal is to stabilize blood glucose levels - this is very hard to do using a traditional 3-meal-per-day plan.

Fruits are not necessarily the wisest choice for snacks. Fruit should be limited in quantity, eat only low GI fruits (apple, strawberry, blueberry, etc), and absolutely NO fruit juice! Fruit must be eaten with its indigestable fiber in tact (in other words eat slices of apple with the skin, not applesauce)

Some other tips to follow will help:
Eat 5-6 meals per day - avoid hunger before it happens.
Avoid all processed and refiined carbs (white flour, pasta, sugar, etc)
Increase complex carbs such as whole grains, veggies, soy, beans, etc
Never eat carbs without protein, not even a snack.
Do not eat excessive protein (should be limited to 30% of total calories per day)
Eat 25-30 grams of fiber per day
Limit cholesterol to 300 mg per day
Limit sodium to 5000 mg per day
Read labels! Ingredients as well as nutritional data.
