Recently I began taking the birth control pill known as Yasmin. I used to have pretty clear skin before, but now (after a nearly a month of taking it), I'm still experiencing PAINFUL cystic acne around the area of my mouth. It seems to be unavoidable as I have been using Proactive on a daily basis, and I'm still getting HUGE pimples. I'm not sure how long this is supposed to be going on as the doctor says "it will get worse before it gets better."
Is there someone out there that has gotten to the point (while taking Yasmin), that their skin cleared up as informed it would be? I don't know of any other treatments that I can use for this as I was under the impression Proactive was the best on the market.
PLEASE HELP!

I was on Yasmin and I always had clear skin. Speak to your doctor tell her that your getting acne she may want to change your pill.

Don't even bother switching pills. Just stop taking it. I have never had acne ever til I went on the pill. I was on it for 9 years and had acne that would never go away. I was just completely fed up and stopped taking the pill and antibitotics and now I get an occasional zit and thats it. Get off the pill!!!!

Hmm...Makes ya wonder what the hay is wrong w/ the doctors--for instance I was on Aleese and I had the same problem as you though not really painful acne per se, just much much more so than I used to ever have---then I got on Yasmin. Not that much acne but that is most likely due to me trying more expensice acne products like clinique. ;) Anyway---you mentioned cysts in the mouth and the funny thing is , I now have many cysts on my vagina and cervix areas and also the one on my hand that I've had for a long time hurts at times now....used to be if I left it alone it didn't. And then there is a cyst that's on my right breast though it comes and goes depending on my cycle...but still I never had cyst problems w/ the exception of the breast and hand until I got on the PILL!!!

Girls please remember everyone is different - our bodies are not the same, so what works for one person (or doesnt work ) has no relevance to what works for another person. My sister LOVES YASMIN and its helped all her sympoms and she praises it immensly, but clearly some girls hate it . Dont be so quick to tell others to get off something that might help them - its more important to discuss the issues w/ the doctor and see what other options there are. Remember for every medication, some people LOVE it and some HATE it - yo uneed to focus on your own body and issues and not others, as helpful as the reviews and everything are , at the end of the day its your own body thats going to take the pill :) good luck

I broke out initially on Yasmin. It got better in my third pack. Yasmin is one of the best (theoretically of course) for acne prone skin because the it is the only pill with an anti-androgenic progestin.

This is a really interesting post! I started Yasmin in February after several years on Ortho Tri-Cyclen and Ortho Evra because I needed a higher dose monophasic pill. It does help with a lot of my menstrual side effects, and I do like it.
My theory on BC and acne is from my dermatologist, which is basically that your chance of having acne clear from birth control--any birth control-- is about 50/50. He told me that OTC used to be a household name, but in the 70s and 80s, it became less prescribed with the intro of more pills. Because they wanted to remain a highly prescribed drug, asked for by patients, they studied the effect of OTC on acne. Because of that, they can say it helps clear acne. Other pills do the same thing--because basically, hormonal acne is helped when the hormones are at a contant level--but since they haven't specifically studied their pill and acne, they are unable to claim that. So, only 50% of women with acne get help from birth control, but since OTC makes those claims of acne cures, women are shocked when their acne doesn't get better. That is confusing, yes? (The same thing is true with allergy pills, says my doctor. Whether you have an allergic reaction to grass or dust, the reaction is the same--you need an anti-histamine. All allergy drugs are anti-histamines, but since certain drugs have studied the effects of indoor allergies specifically, they can advertise as being for indoor allergies.)
So basically, after trying OTC for my acne, my derm decided that it wasn't helpful, and I should just stay on BC that I liked and was best for me gynecologically. I think this is fine--especially since I have been treated for acne for years now. (Two rounds of Accutane and numerous antibiotics.) Currently I'm taking 100 mg twice daily of Adoxa, which I just started in June after many months of tetracycline. However, I too have experienced an increase in cystic acne in the past few months, but there's too much changing to pinpoint the direct cause--new BC, new antibiotics, possibly my big break out after the Accutane effect has gone away. I think it's interesting though that we're experiencing the exact same symptoms.
As usual, my derm doesn't think anything about the Yasmin. I probably won't stop taking it, because I like it a lot... but I will ask my gyn about it at my yearly in October. Let me know what you find out though!
