View Full Version : Should we get tested?

My father in law found out about 3 years ago that he has Hepatitis C. He has had it for 25 years.

My husband who was 20 at the time also got tested and his tests came back negative. Well, we have been living in the same house with my inlaws for a year, and I have recently become worried that we may have been exposed to the disease.

I know it's only transferred through blood, not hugging, sharing a dring,...etc.
But, it doesn't seem like my father in law is very concerned with protecting everyone else in the house.

Examples,

His feet sometimes bleed on the floor, but he won't wear socks to keep blood from touching anyone else.

He has actually borrowed my husband's razor when we weren't home. My husband never used the razor after he found out, so I don't think they've actually shared razors.

And one more example, last December he had some tests done and was stuck with needles which caused him to bleed. He actually left the bloody gauze in the back seat of the car and didn't remove it. My mother in law had to. She does her best to clean up after him, but this really scares me.

He is a nice man, and he doesn't do it on purpose. He's just careless.

My husband thinks we have nothing to worry about, but I think we should be tested.

Am I being paranoid like my husband says or do you think I have a good reason to be worried.

He has chirrossis of the liver, and is in horrible shape. He will die if he doesn't get a liver transplant soon and he is only 50 years old. I just don't want to see the same thing happen to my husband, because he isn't careful.

Mrs.M
my personal opinion is, that you both should get tested (once a year - for example). There are two good reasons:
a) You are scared, and the testing is probably the only way how to handle that.
b) There is some risk of HCV contraction (though it's really small). And the sooner you find it, the better chance of being cured you have.

I don't know how expensive is the test in your country, but I think it's worth of it.

So: Don't worry, Get tested :)
