I know many who have better luck with fewer side effects using Trileptal (in the Tegretol family or Carbitol, same family with oxygen added...) You might try asking your neuro if these are choices for you. It is so hard to deal with side effects and the seizures.....Hope a med switch is a big help.
You may have a few breakthrough seizures as you change...it happens kind of often, your neuro may have mentioned this...
you can always ask him why he feels Tegretol is the best choice for you...

If any medication is not helping, there is no reason to take it. Also, since you are having bleeding gums, you do need a change of meds. Has your doc checked all of your blood work lately? That is a good idea since you have been takng Dilantin long enough for it to have affected your gums. I have to ask. What kind of seizures do you have? That determines the med. The reason I ask is because Tegretol seems to be more effective with Complex Partial seizures and Dilantin is not for that type. I took Tegretol for many years and eventually, on the higher doses, found that it affected my mentation, memory, and attitude. This wasn't noticeable on the lower doses however. It is a common med used in Partial seizures, so it is worth a shot. Partial sizures can also become Secondarily Generalized. You do need a change in meds No doubt. I encourage you to see out others who have taken Tegretol. Phoebe
