View Full Version : Stumped on daughter's stomach problem!!!

I am very concerned about my daughter's stomach problem. This hais been very frustrating.tAbout 4 weeks ago she started complaining of a stomach pain around & just below her belly button area. Then she started having nausea, then vomitting & diareaha. There has only been an off & on low grade fever & weight loss of 2-3 lbs.Last Friday night I had to take her to the ER,they put her on an IV for being dehydrated, her blood tests & urine came back normal & she vomitted while in the ER.They gave her phenagran for the nausea & passed the diagnosis off as a stomach virus. She was back in the ER that Sunday night with the same symptoms and given the same treatment(IV,blood tests),her blood & urine, once again normal. She was sent home on visatril for nausea, but her abdomen pain continued. Her vomitting had now ceased but the diarreha increased.A follow up to her doctor 3 days later, she still had the stomach pain, which she has described as stabbing & burning & constant pain.he sent her home on a 7 day prescription of AcipHex,,this has brought no relief. After a follow up again today,he has now ordered stool samples for testing which were submitted today and an Upper G I scheduled for Wed. morning,She is 11 years old. What could be the cause of her symptoms and what will the Upper Gi show,if anything,or what level of seriousness is this...I just hate to see her suffering with out any diagnosis or reason..I welcome any response.Thank You...(a very concerned mother)

They have ruled out the appendix I hope. My friends son when he had appendicitis was in the exact same region, just below the belly button, not your typical left hand side pain most are observant for detecting. I hope you get a definitive diagnosis soon, you are in my prayers.

Okay, so I have had two situations similar to this. My uncle had almost exactly the same symptoms you wrote about. They kept sending him home from the hospital. They told him that it couldn't be appendicitis because he was vomitting and apparently this isn't normal (however I have heard of it many times since). Finally they kept him in ER and sent my grandmother home (they lived in the next town an hour away) and she got home to get the message that his appendix had ruptured and he needed emergency surgery and of course for that they needed her signature. He almost died from all of the poison in his body and ended up being very sick afterwards and missed his graduation and it was all just awful. Anyway, the point is different people have different symptoms and you have to be careful not to get put to the side because the doctor doesn't know what it is. Be firm and get a diagnosis.
My situation was a little different in that I wasn't vomitting. I had incredible pain and it would get so bad that I would drop to the ground when it hit. I went to the doctors numerous times and also to the ER. Nobody could figure it out and I think they thought I was faking it. I was only 15. Finally I couldn't get in to see my doctor so I made an appointment with another one in the same office. He told me I had appendicitis and to get to the hospital asap, and he would phone ahead and let them know I was coming. Anyway, it turned out I didn't have appendicitis but instead I had an ovarian cyst that had ruptured taking part of my ovary with it. I was bleeding internally and almost died. Again I say be firm and get answers. Don't be afraid to go to another doctor. It saved my life.
Good luck and God Bless!!

grey blur brings up a good point here(by the way, sorry for what you had to go through,i was pretty much in the same situation). From about age 14-16,i ended up in the er about three times with basically the same symptoms as your daughter.Being that i was so young,no one ever thought to check into the reproductive organs.Well, after the third time, someone finally decided that maybe i should see a gynecologist(gee,ya think?) this was after having tons of tests and gi work ups and a bunch of different blood tests.i was basically being patted on the head by the docs as they were telling my parents that it was all possibly "just in my head".Well we made that appt with the gyn,and within five minutes of him being into the pelvic exam,i was Dxed with endometriosis! God, I was so relieved to hear ,finally that there was actually something going on in there.I would really check into seeing a gyn for your daughter. You never know.Good luck and keep us posted.Tell your daughter that i know how she feels and my heart goes out to her in having to go through all of this junk, just to find the cause for her suffering.Keep pushing things mom, until you get some answers.Luckily my mom believed me and stood by me until we found a cause.i know that you will be there for your daughter as well, and believe me, that makes a huge difference for your daughter.don't take any crap from any Drs, just keep pushing it if you do not feel that they are adressing the problem.Marcia

I knew someone personally with the same symtoms. Doctor sent her home after her visit in the ER,etc. pain came again, went back to ER and whamo! It WAS appendicitis. Her dr. made the wrong diagnosis.
But with a blood test, they're testing to see how how the white blood cells count is plus other things to tell them something is going on inside. the count would be high if it was appendicitis.
what about a gastro specialtist. does she have problems after eating a meal especiallya greasy meal? like hotdogs, or fried chicken or cold cuts as an example? I've never heard of a child that young suffering from gall bladder disease or the ducts being blocked, or maybe it could be the pancreas?
Not really sure and I'm not a dr. so please don't take my word. If it were me, I would go to a different dr. and a different facility if at all possible.
My neice when she was that age always was complaining her stomach hurt her. plus she couldn't sleep. they didn't know what was wrong with her. Until my sister found this other dr. and sure enough it was something serious.
she has a deformed pancreas. when they did the surgery they found it.
she is in constant pain and has to take a morphine based medication all the time. she's been put through programs to get her off the first medicine because her body became addicted to the medicine.
they even did a special surgery to block the nerves so she could be pain free for just a little while. but it's not permanent.
Now sh'es in her late 20's, had high risk pregnancies because of her illness and she's had a special unit put into her abdomen which time releases the medication right into her system without her having to do it herself.
I forgot the name for this thing. sorry! it's early morning here.
I think it's called a port?
I hope it's not something this serious and I hope they are able to come to a conclusion soon.
someone had mentioned a burst cyst.
I had one too that burst. and let me tell you. it was the worst pain I've ever had besides child birth. it was worst.
I couldn't stop vomitting and I won't forget when I went to the ER and a nurse or someone had popped popcorn as a snack somewhere on the unit, and it had burnt. Well, to this day I can't get that memory out of my head. it made me even more nauseus. I had diahrea too plus the sporadic waves of sharp stabbing pain on the right side.
they called in a general surgeon and he thought it was appencicitis too. they almost did emergency surgery but for some reason waited. they gave me the anti nausea drug and a shot of pain killer and it stopped it. put me in a room overnight, did an ultra sound the next day and said it was a burst ovarian cyst. they said it looked like the contents had spilled and could see it inside. they called in my obgyn and she disagreed and told me to go to my gastro dr. who said it could have been a blocked duct. a stone? this is yrs. ago I'm talking about, so please don't quote me word to word. To this day I don't know what it was.
I had a laparoscopy by a another gyno for a cyst removal back in "2000" and because I had stomach problems too looked at the other things inside and said the gallbladder was matted to something and had scar tissue or adhesions all over it. so maybe it was a stone or something to do with the gallbladder.
get another opinion for your daughter. Please keep us informed of what's going on. I hope she stays well. she will be on my mind and heart.
good luck.

So glad you finally got help Marcia! I am sorry you had to go through all of that as well. You are so right about the believing the daughter with her pain. I went home after the doctor told me to go to the ER and told my aunt (my mom was at work) and she made me do the dishes before she took me for my operation. She feels so bad about it to this day (almost 20 years later). The topic usually comes up about once or twice a year about how she made me do dishes and then walk three blocks to ER because she didn't want to pay to park. She honestly thought it was all in my head. It is funny now but it sure wasn't then. Continue to take care of your daughter hsw, she will always remember it. God Bless

I have been having severe stomach problems for over a year, same pain in the same spot. When it started, I went to the ER and after the 4th night of me going in there I was told to "come back when I had a real problem". I was diagnosed by 4 different doctors with 4 different results. Ovarian cysts, kidney stones, flu, and the hint that it might be psychological. The last doctor perscribed me just about everything he could to get me out of there. I still have the pain and my doctor refuses to send me to a gynocologist even though I have requested it. I am 20 years old and do not want to end up not being able to have kids some day because of this doctor's opinion. I got a second opinion and he said the same thing - a gynocologist wasn't necessary. Apparently, as long as you aren't having sex everything is ok. I really don't know what to do but just deal with the pain and hope everything is ok. Keep pushing your doctors for your daughter. Who knows what the consequences could be in the future! Good luck and please keep us posted! :)

another thought is crones disease. i have a freind who's 11 yr old daughter had gotten sick, stomach pain, throwing up the whole bit. they finally found out she had crones disease. for the most part now, she is fine. just has to stay away from certain foods, especially with seeds, like papcorn, berries, had to eat a lot of fiber etc. maybe the GI will show something this week. i hope they figure this out so your daughter can get better real soon.

My son had some of the exact same symptoms. He is only 3 1/2 mo. old. He had something called a urachal cyst. Our urologist said he sees 2-3 cases per year of this. This cyst happens when the connection between the umbilicus (belly button) and the bladder (this connection is only supposed to exist in utero. it's how the baby gets rid of waste) does not completely close off after birth. It can take years for it to back up from the bladder and cause the cyst. PLease ask your doctor if that might be the case. We have a great urologist in Southwest Ohio! Good luck.

I would check out if it is Crohn's Disease. Sounds very familiar to my symptons when i was diagnosed at age 16.
