Hi everyone. Life has been pretty rough lately, and I'm thinking my meds are to blame. I'm 30yrs old, and have been on Carbatrol for about 6yrs. I have not had a seizure in 5yrs. I have to two healthy children, ages 4 & 2. I was on the carbatrol for both of my pregnancys. Last Oct. I was pg with my third child, it ended in m/c at 8.5wks. I became pg again, just ended in another m/c, again at 8.5wkws. I haven't had any tests run, haven't even been able to see my neuroligist yet. But my feeling is that the meds have been causing the m/c's. I know that they can deplete your body of folic acid, which can cause neural tube defects in the fetus, and usually lead to a pregnancy that will not last. Is there anyone else out there that has gone thru anything like this? I want to see my doc soon and tell him I want to go off the meds. It's a little scary to think of doing that, but I know if I can have a healthy baby it would be worth it. Please respond if you have any advice. Thank you so much.

By the way m/c means miscarriage. I just remembered I'm not typing on the pregnancy board anymore!

I am so very sorry for your losses!! I am not on AEDs, but did have 6 miscarraiges on the way to having my two kids (who both have epilepsy now)....


Are you already on folic acid? I have heard that this is very important way before getting pregnant. I do not know much about Carbitrol, but since you were on it for your two full term pregnancies i assume it is ok. Hope the neuro or OB can be a help for you....
