Yes that is exactly what it feels like, right below breast level and is even worse if I lie on my side.  At its worst almost always accompanied by burping - BIG TIME. I guess the good news is that I have had this for going on 4 years so probably not a fatal problem but so very uncomfortable and utterly baffeling as no doctor has been able to figure it out. I had my gallbladder out. had an ultra sound, a cat scan, an upper GI and nothing. Anyone with any idea would be a godsend to me and would have my everlasting gratitude. Thanks much.

Hey,

To see a diverticle of esophagus or minor chiatal hernia would perhaps need X - ray with contrast of upper GI.
If the change occur mostly only when burpig it means that the esophageal or gastric wall is distending only at that time and no investigation would show this (the meassurment of inner esophageal pressure during burping maybe would).
If this change is far from the middle line, something lung/pleura related would be possible and would occur while caughing.
I don't have the right impression if this potato is like a mass or it splashes when you put pressure over it.
