Ok, so I'm 17 and I got it from my fiance. I've heard all kinds of things about it. I really don't know too much of the truth. All my doctor told me was that I need to get a coloscopy and I didn't go in for the appointment. How long does it take for it to turn into cancer? And what about my fiance? I was told that it doesn't get detected in males so does he do nothing about him?

Hi there!
Well I also have HPV, I was diagnosed 3 months ago, so I have gotten a lot of info.
Well, HPV is a virus that lives in the skin cells, therefore you get it from skin-to-skin contact (not by fluids). HPV is very contagious, 80% of the U.S. population has it and half of them don't even know it because it can lay dormant in your body for years. The virus never leaves your body, but it is believed that it takes about 2 years for your body to suppress the virus. Which means you are always contagious, whether you have a wart or an abnormal pap (i am not sure if you have the wart strain also??)
Since you have the strain which causes adnormal cell growth on your cervix, first off....you DO NOT have cancer, the only reason why people say that is because if you don't take care of the abnormal cell growth it can develop into cervical cancer (which takes about 3-7 years to fully develop). This is why your doctor is performing the coloscopy so that he can see if you do have abnormal cell growth on your cervix and if so, he will then freeze your cervix.
I have had both of these done on me and they aren't too bad.
HPV rarley shows up in males, this is why they are considered carriers of the virus. I have a boyfriend and so I asked my doctor some questions and he told me that my bf has a less than 3% chances of developing a wart and has a higher chance of getting hit by a medeor than to get penille cancer. So your finace has nothing to worry about, but he probably does have the virus (even if he has no symptoms) which means he could pass it on to others.
HPV isn't life threatening, yes there is no cure, its just a BIG pain to deal with. The important thing is, is that you are aware you may have abnormal cell growth and now you must make sure you go in for your paps every 6 months.
If you have any more questions feel free to post! Just remember there are A LOT of people out there who know exactly what your going through!!
Good Luck!

Thanks that made me feel a little bit better. I just keep going through sites and reading up on what we have and theres not too much good information to be found. I didn't know most of these things, my doctor didn't really tell me much. Just that I had hpv after 2 paps came back abnormal and that I need a coloscopy.

I was also wondering how much would all this cost if I have nothing? I have no insurance. I can't seem to find any information on usual costs either.

I am not sure on exact costs, I am on my mom's insurance so I am covered but I know that the tests I had at first to tell me I had HPV were over $200. If I were you I would get insurace ASAP, because you are going to be going into the doctor every 6 months for the rest of you life now, and those paps can be spendy sometimes.
Maybe you should discuss this with your doctors office, and they could help you.

Hi, i also have HPV. I was just diagnosed with abnormal pap smear 3 months ago. I had the freezing done also. Everything that was said in the previouse post is all i know also. You should get insurance quick because nothing is under a few hundred dollors in the medical world and you will have to get regular paps every six months now. I wish you well

KATTOB:

Do you have the actual warts too? Have your paps come back normal since you had the freezing?

Yes, I also have actual warts. I don't have any at this present time though, I have treated them with Condylox gel and they are now gone. I do not get my next pap until Septemeber, my doc says you must wait 4-6 mos after your freezing because by that time you cervix will be almost back to normal.
