Hi,

I am new to this board, but I've been hanging out in the thyroid boards for the past 2 years. My doctor is following me for a yet to be determined thyroid problem (probably Hashimotos). Anyway I have been very ill with "whatever" for the past 2 years. Here is my question, in my latest labs she tested me for diabetes, as well as thyroid levels. My blood sugar came back as 44 which she said is way to high and could fall into diabetes in no time. Needless to say she told me to cut out all sugars (which leaves me very dizzy) and eat lots of fat and protein. My dad has diabetes. Can anyone help me understand my results and give me any advice what to eat. Should I be concerned, could my underlying thyroid issue cause my blood sugar to go crazy? Any help would be great!

Thanks,

lil'miss

I am confused by your test results of 44 and your doctor's guidance. If you are in the US and your glucose is measured in mg/dl then your test results are quite low, in fact dangerously low..... I am guessing this is not the case. If you are not in the US and your glucose is measured in mmol/l then 44 is dangerously high (792 mg/dl) and your doctor should have advised you as such. This result implies you need IMMEDIATE attention and treatment (like go to the ER and get help!)

First double-check your test results and make sure you have the numbers right. Then call your doctor and ask for clarification of your results. If you are using the mmol/l then anything over 7 would be considered diabetic - and you are 44!!!

Next, if you are not seeing an Endocrinologist you need to. I am diabetic AND hypothyroid and only an Endo can treat me properly - I use my GP for sore throats and flu... and referrals, not much more than that. Hyothyroidism can cause insulin resistance, so your thyroid problem may be directly related to your diabetes.

After you confirm your immediate medical needs, you can check these threads for advice on controlling diabetes with diet:
