View Full Version : Reactive Hypoglycemia Question

It was suggested by my Doctor about 1 year ago that I suffered from hypoglycemia. From what information I could find, I narrowed it down to reactive hypoglycemia. I stopped eating all things carb and my reactions slowed down tremendously. The odd time when I get too comfortable and eat something I should not, like bread, I get another set of reactions. Here is my situation/question. Tipicaly, a reaction comes on from these circumstances. For Tuesday's lunch I had two A&W cheeseburgers with about 15 fries. I know I shouldn't but did. For supper I had a loaded cheeseburger and mozza fries. I had one reaction Wednesday, two Thursday, two Friday, and one Saturday. Today is Sunday and I haven't had one yet. After Tuesday, I switched back to my low-carb diet. Does this sound like reactive hypo? My thyroid checked out normal. This is typicallly what happens when I eat simple carbs. I don't even eat any fruit because the reactions last for days, and are very disruptive to my normal routine. I have such a narrow diet and would love to be able to eat normal again. I am an otherwise healthy, fit male. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

I did a "quick reply" but don't know what happened to it, so will try again since this screen came up.

Can't help with your question, sorry, although I just may have a version of your problem too, not low blood sugar reactions but very high ones and maybe allergy reaction to some of the oral meds.

Will you keep us posted so we can learn in case we ever have this? Thanks. Good luck.

Eagle, I had terrible reactions to oral meds - caused drastic hypoglycemia for me - it was like a rollercoaster - dramatic highs and lows. I have since come off the meds and my bg is now completely under control with diet and excercise.

Sahara2, Reactive Hypoglycemia is a tricky thing - it takes much dicipline to gain control. I had a severe case when I was in my 20s and learned to control it with stringent diet and lifestyle changes. Now, 23 years later I am a diabetic - this is practically inevitable, so you will benefit greatly to focus on control and good health.

If you are hypoglycemic, you should keep a journal of all your food consumption and document your symptoms. This will help you determine what is causing the symptoms. Likely a few things are contributing to your episodes:
1. The amount of time between meals.
2. The ratio of carbs/protein/fat you are eating
3. The types of foods you are eating (high fat, fries, lots of bread etc)
4. Your current state of health (the more your body is weakened, the more often you will have symptoms and the worse they will become)
5. Vitamin and mineral difficiencies
6. Dehydration

I would be happy to help you further with this if you want... What did you do differently today that you did not have any reactions???

It could, as someone else has said, be allergies. My reactive hypoglycemia turned out to be major food allergies and I'm still struggling. Good luck finding out, I know how horrible hypoglycemic reactions are!

Thank you so much for the reply. I read your link and it gave me alot to work with. I am going to investigate the HAI diet. Right now I feel as if a breakthrough is going to happen for me. Thanks for the hope! Sahara2
