Just need some reassurance again. Last September, I posted about having an increase in indigestion that lasted about two weeks only to be replaced by another symptom. Now, I have had this indigestion problem back again for going on a week. Has anyone experienced this? Naturally, I feel that it might be stomach cancer or something. I know that my anxiety has increased but I'm not sure if it's because I feel so miserable with the indigestion and burping. Hope someone can help. Thank you in advanced.

Twanger, I'm a pro at stomach problems, anxiety and perimenopause. Yes, we have estrogen receptors in our stomachs, so yes, perimenopause can cause your stomach to go crazy. I have the indigestion on and off throughout the month. The only time it seems to be okay is when I'm on my period and for the week, then here we go again. I'm taking aciphex and you might want to talk to a gastro or internist about taking something so it doesn't make you more anxious. Alot of acid in our bodies can make us nervous.

Yes, my doctor told me this is a symptom of perimeno. Geez, whats next, right?? Anyways, she told me to try digestive enzymes that you can buy at any health food store. You take one before every meal. It saved me!! I took them for about two months, and once I started them I never had the indigestion. It started to kind of come back again about a month ago, and I started taking them again, and voila! It was gone. They do not affect you in any other way and there are no side effects so they are completely safe. Give them a try.

Yes, please tell us what brand you are using. This sounds interesting. I take one Nexium a day but lately, that does not seem to be doing the trick. I just don't know what is going on. I had this last year for about two weeks and it went away. It seems to be constant, not just after eating. Is that the way it is for you?

Hi Twanger,

Yes, I get the acid reflux and then when that goes away, I get the irritated bladder - it goes back and forth and like Andrea said, the only time I'm fine is when I have my period (like I do now).

Hi All! Yes, please try these they will work. I use a brand that is available here in Canada. I buy them at Sangster's Health Foods and they are Sangster's Digestive Enzymes. They come in capsules and I take one before each meal. If you don't have Sangster's there, you can get them at GNC or I'm sure at any other good health food/vitamin place. Just ask the clerk. Mine say 500 mg in each capsule. Also, make sure you get the ones that say "full spectrum activity" which means they digest and break down proteins, fats, carbs, fiber, milk and sugar. There are some out there that only break down one or two products. A bottle of 60 capsules costs me $15 canadian. Let me know what you find - you could probably also check the GNC website and see what they carry. Sangster's has a website if you want to see what they look like.

Thanks Beauty Queen! Very thoughtful of you. Can you give us the Sangster's website? I will check out GNC. Do you think I should ask my gastro about this first, I don't want to add more acid to a very acidic system right now?

Their website is www.sangsters.com. You could ask your doctor about them, but these don't add acid to your system. They help your system digest and process everything faster so you don't get the heartburn and indigestion. I have had absolutely no side effects with these at all. Also, you don't have to take them forever. I start taking them again when I start to feel the heartburn or indigestion coming up again. I took them for a month straight to get everything back in order, and now I keep a bottle on hand to take for a week or so if I start getting symptoms again. I believe its a lot better than popping Tums or Pepcid or something similar all the time.

kc - I know what you mean. I am just like you. I fluctuate between irritable bladder, indigestion, knee pain, irritable bowel. Mostly, the bladder irritation and indigestion. No bladder problems yet. Those were two weeks ago. Now the indigestion. In between, the knee. I am really getting tired of all this. I wonder if this is what the rest of my life will be. I hear stories about post menopausal zest. Is that just for the lucky ones?

Well if this is the case, I'll be on Xanax for a very very long time.

Feel better!

My bladder should be acting up in about 2 days or so - I have that pinpointed - as soon as my period ends, there goes the bladder. Of course if it's not the bladder, it's the chest pains - having them now. Plus I keep getting this "look over my shoulder" feeling - one of those panicky moments - over what - beats the heck out of me.

Hi kc, you mentioned that you have chest pains. I've veen having chest pains for the last 3 days. It feels like my heart and goes straight through my back and down my arm. I went to the doctor and had an EKG and it was normal. Now I'm wondering if it's part of perimenopause. What does your pains feel like? Are they concentrated in the heart area or your entire chest? My doctor also said while listening to my heart "so you have a heart murmur huh?" I said "I've never been told in 48 years that I have a heart murmur". He said "well you do". Kind of concerning but he just shrugged it off.

Hi Sissy!

I have a heart murmur too. My doctor told me everyone has one and some are detected and some are not. I have pressure in my chest and then when I get the pains, they can shoot down my arms, my legs, radiate around my back. I can't stand it when I have a bra on and this happens - the bra feels too tight and I know it is not. I also have breathing problems - especially when I wake up in the morning and I feel waterlogged. I believe this is part of peri because others have this as well. It helps once I sit up and get going in the mornings but I know if I do any type of lifting, it comes back. I am getting an endo done on the 30th to rule out a hiatal hernia - that is a classic symptom. I also have acid reflux and am on aciphex for that which has helped. I had the EKG and everything else and I'm fine.

So know you are not alone! I know I was real scared when it first started happening! I have to stay away from caffeine now - seems to really aggravate it. Plus I smoke and it makes it much worse so cutting back on that too.

i really think that all of us are fine. I have spoken to so many women who do not have a hiatal hernia or any other stomach ailments, but yet, when they begin the meno phase, there stomachs uproar with IBS or acid reflex and it seems to be a total perimenopause phase. Hope this helps everyone. My gastro has confirmed this also my gyne has confirmed this. And if you look around, look how many women have gastro problems beginning in peri.

Yep, right on the money Andrea. Lots of stomach problems here! GAS, cramps, constipation, bloating - never had any of that before peri came along.

It is the fear and the sensitation of our bodies that is keeping this alive. I've learned this in anxiety therapy. Our bodies get very sensitive to hormone change and then we wonder what the heck is wrong with us, so we develop fear and then we continue with fear by developing adrenaline fear adrenaline. The best way to break this is, to face, to accept, to desensitize by not getting to involved with our bodies and then let time pass. This is what happened in the past to women who went into menopause and long time ago they thought women were just losing their minds, like menopause was some sort of disease. It's not, it's the bodies natural way of saying goodbye to youth and baby making. We need to be more selective in what we eat too since our stomachs our obviously obvlious with homrone changes. We could set up a litte therpay for ourselves, by each day sharing what we have done to desensitize and how we dealt with that sort of episode through the day. We can be each others comfort and guidance. What do you think?

I think this would be a GREAT IDEA because to tell you the truth, this is driving me crazy. I want to go on with my life and not spend everyday with a new worry over my health or my body playing tricks on me. This morning, at 5am, I woke up with shooting pains in my upper right quadrant and lots of gas. Add to that, a week of non-stop belching and middle of the chest burning and I am ready to shout. I want to go out and enjoy the summer but to have all this going on occupies my mind. I am tired of it and would like to move on. Sooooooo, lets go for it.

Totally awesome, let's do it!

kc

ps - for starters during my attack last night w/ the hives - I thought about all you guys on this board and it really helped calm me down. I kept saying - this is all in my mind - the panicky part, not the hives so I was able to slow my thinking down a bit:)
