Hi,
My husband has a 2 hour round trip drive for work in terrible traffic! He is always complaining of his lower back hurting him. We've looked for lumbar support cushions but have been unimpressed. Can anyone recommend a good cushion or other product that would reduce the stress on his back?
I'd really appreciate any info you have.

I was wondering about this myself, so I thought I'd revive this thread. I am currently using a little cushion that is round (cylindrical). It's a lot better than nothing, but you have to position it everytime you get in the car, and if you don't get it in the right place, it won't support your back that well. Plus, since it's just a pillow, it will get compressed and packed together (like an old pillow).
Anyone used anything different/better? I was looking around and saw a few things online that seemed better. Some had straps so you could attach them to the seat and it would stay in place. This is really important for anyone with back problems, especially if you work and need to drive/sit for long periods of time.
Edit: I guess there was another thread that addresses some of this...http://www.healthboards.com/boards/showthread.php?t=19715

They don't like you posting addresses on this board for some reason I don't quite comprehend, and all are removed within six or eight hours. But yes, there are some really good Lumbar-type seat cushions out there that FEELGOOD even in the STORE.
COMpletely because they are made well and there are all types, too. Some that even give side support, which helps a lot on a long drive. Anyway, I hope you find it as it's not hard to, if you've paid attention. ;) GOOD luck with your search. I sure know mine FEELGOOD.

I just purchased a good vibrating & heat back pad. It goes from the neck to the middle of the legs & can be used in the car, the adapter comes with it. Have him try one of those, it keeps the back relaxed & from tensing up.
Also, if his lower pain continues, consider physical therapy for it. Sitting is the worst for anyone with SI joint problems. The SI joint locks up & that is what causes the pain. I just finished PT for that same problem & the exercises they taught me have helped immensely.

LOL...thanks for the suggestions Stormygale. I was very amused at the innovative way in which you chose to 'convey' your suggestion. I'll try to get something this week, and if I do, I'll let you guys know how it works out.

I use a regular bed pillow, just put it on the seat behind me. The advantage of a regular pillow is that it will conform to whatever shape your spine is. When I get into the seat, I push back against it, creating the form that works for me.
The problem with most of the prefab pillows, in my experience, is that they assume "one size fits all." It doesn't.

Hi
I use a memory foam lumbar support - like the mattress it moulds to your shape. A couple of family members use it and swear by it. It makes a huge difference and I wouldn't drive without it now.

An inflatable one feels good.

I ended up getting a mesh type back support that attaches to your seat. I tried it for a little while, and it felt pretty good...the best part for me is that it 'attaches' to the seat, so I don't have to adjust it like the pillows. Saves me the time and a little bit of back pain in moving around and trying to get into a comfortable position. I'm taking a 4 hour drive in a few days..I'll let you guys know how it performs. Thanks for the advice everyone, especially Stormygale...hope you're feeling better.
