Are there any others who will list their symptoms? I'm curious.

I haven't got a clue if I am in the peri or not, someone suggested I could be,but these are my symptoms.

Sleep disturbances
Hot flushes in bed
Panic attacks
Palpitations
Periods closer together (21 days) sometimes
If not close together then they are really heavy
anxiety
NAUSEA
Things thata could be IBS (not diagnosed) e.g. bloated, wind, diarrohea/constipation
Heat in centre of chest

As I said I don't KNOW if this is the peri or not. I am 38yrs old.

I'm 39 and I have all that you have. Peri causes all sorts of hell. I think I forgot to put ibs in my list - only because I am on Zelnorm for it and all the gas is gone, the bloating is gone - it works. I go regularly now. Only thing, I have to watch what I eat - fatty foods kill me. How I miss Mickey D's!

Hi, here is my list...it is not continual, in that I am not having these symtpoms all the time but the past few years have had them :

Nightsweats (more so a few months ago, with palpitations when I first got them, now seem to get them (nightsweats) only occassionally and not badly.

Prolonged PMS (meaning everything I normally would get with PMS ....moodswings, anxiety, feeling tired) , again not as bad now but was really at a peak this March and early April. In general my perimenopause has been mostly a prolonged feeling of Pms though.

Cramps are usual before my period but I can get them a bit week before.

periods used to be every 28 days but in my early to Mid 40s (I just turned 50 this year), they got to be where I could get them 22 days apart to 24 days. Had two times last year where it came at day 40 and then one cycle where it came on day 50. This year it has been day 25 until 2 months ago when I have now got it at day 31. Flow is very short for the most part...3 days. Have had times where it will come for 2 days, then nothing and then reappear a few days later, just lightly or brownish discharge.

Breast tenderness (although this is normal for me with my period and it comes only at that time.

Intestinal discomfort...diarhhea at times week before period. more of an irritable bowel and gas in peri. in general but it seems to be better now, thankfully.

Aching at time of what would be ovulation, in the area of ovaries and also referred type of aching in that area and above.

Back problem that I have (unrelated to peri) is at times more flared up during cycle.

My only complaint until this early March was just the shorter times between cycles and a bit more pms issues. Then March came and anxiety was rampant (dr gave me Xanax to take as needed) and intestines were very much in an uproar. I do think my anxiety really had a lot to do with this as it creates acidity in our system when we stress. I did not feel like myself at all all of March and into beginning of April. then later April to now has been much much better. Don't know what to attribute that to...I am taking Vitamin b complex every morning, Estroven vitamins which the doctor recommended and I am able to get back into a routine of exercise which I hadn't been able to do due to back and ankle problems (jazzercize, bike at gym and pilates). I have been reading a lot about the symptoms of peri and this has helped ease my anxiety as has this board.

Hello Ladies, I have been reading these boards about 4 months. Just joined up last week and this is my first post. These boards have been very helpful to me I thought for sure I was dying or I was becoming a hypercondriact (SP)..I will be 49 in October, I have one son soon to be 17 and have been with my boyfriend 13 years. I am lucky to have been able to be a stay at home Mom since he was born.Spend alot of my time taking care of my Mum,my family, and spends too much time on the computer at night..lol I always had regular periods, every 28, never missed, with the usual pms with back and leg aches my only complaint. That was until about three years ago when periods came 26 days apart sometimes 24 and the cramps and pms worse..The last couple of years my symptons got worse and the last year has been miserable. Here is my list that I can think of for tonight..

Periods closer and more intense. Missed 3 in the last year. Haven't had on since may 15..Cramps at any time the feeling I am getting my period any time.
Tingling in hands when I am on puter for awhile
Tingling in feet like lack of circulation
DRY skin
Gray hairs caught up with me
Brown spots on face and arms
Crashing fatique
Insomnia
Reflux feeling of something in my throat
Anxiety, nervousness, always worried about my health and my Moms
Worry so much about my son that I am driving him crazy and away..I call him constantly when he is not home wanting to know what he's doing..
Excess gas
Weight gain i started smoking again even thou it makes me feel awful
Nausea sometimes in the morning, freak out I may be pregnant
Craving for chocolate chip cookies warm from the oven at 1 am
Frequent headaches...His name is Thomas lol
Lack of energy and not wanting to do anything outside of the house.
Sadness not so much depression and very emotional..i cry over a klenex commercial
NO SEXUAL DESIRE the last year or so, it's almost repulsive
The one that is currenty freaking me out is my hips thighs and legs ache so bad the last few months mostly all the time. Sometimes when I walk even short distance they hurt and I feel like I am ninty..
And let me not forget, forgetfull and spacey.
The only thing I have not had is night sweets and hot flashes, but i think I had them in my late 30's
oh also, my gums have gotten worse in the last six months i am now rinsing everyday with listerine and when I sweat I had a odor I never had before.
For the last 3 months I have been taking,Multi,super b max,magnesium,potassium,calcium/D,vit E,vit C, and fish oil concentrate
Don't know if it realy helps or not does not cure, but my skin is not as dry.
Am I in peri or what!! lol goodnight girls.. jojo

I'm glad I found this message board. I've been feeling weird and wondering if I'm starting in on this next phase of life.

So, I'm 44 and my experiences include:

extreme fatigue..very hard to overcome
insomina
heart palpitations, occasionally
shakiness, trembling at times
flushing/night sweats/daytime hot flashes too
IBS/heartburn
anxiety/depression
heavy periods that are getting closer together

I've started taking some vitamins (B complex, E, and a multi) and that's seemed to help some. Still, this is amazing how bad this can make you feel. It's really a chore to continue to function normally every day when you feel awful and weird.

Thanks everyone.. it really helps to hear others experiences and suggestions.

Hi,

Tattougal mentioned the gums. I can say that I feel mine have receeded (sp)? Plus certain times of the month they bleed when I brush my teeth. I have had no cavities or any problems with my mouth up until about 6 months ago.

Oh yea, and gray hairs?! I get those covered up now. They sprout up all in the front - on top. Plus I get hair where I've never gotten it before (the chin, the breasts, a stray long one or two on my forearms) - real weird.

My symptoms occur at two - four week intervals over the past two years. However, the feeling of doom and gloom and extreme anxiety is ever present;
dizziness
anxiety/depression
bouts of terrible indigestion and difficulty swallowing
muscle aches and pains - behind shoulder blades, in breast bone, in arms and in knees
and legs.
extreme fatigue at times - feels like the flu
crying at everything and once I start, can't stop
intense worry over everything
irritable bladder about once a month
irritable bowel
itchy, burning, crawling skin
hot flashes
night sweats
sleepless nights
heart flutters when just resting
loss of sexual drive
nausea
indigestion with belching
Wow, sounds like I'm ready to check into a nursing home. Two years ago, I felt great. Could walk miles and move and lift anything. Now, I can barely get up from lying on the floor. I feel like I'm 90 years old.

Hi Dmill,
I had my thyroid checked years ago b/c and am mild hypo. I have been on med for it for years. When I was feeling bad, my thyroid was within range (while on med, of course). They also found 6 thyroid nodules at this time. I think I have more hyper symptoms than hypo. but the dr. said I'm hypo... I read that your thyroid can go out of wack during peri.

Peri is so much like hyperthyroidism. I had it, but had my thyroid checked 3 times and it's normal. Couldn't figure that one out. But Molly is right, peri will mess with your thyroid.

Debra Mine is pretty high on the throat also and feels more on the right side. Can't see anything there but i can feel the area with my finger if i don't gag. My Mom suggested reflux I haven't been to a dr. in 3 years. I must go to gyn soon. I may also be anxiety. My good friend passed away from throat cancer 3 years ago and I have had that feeling since. I am keeping track of my symptoms and periods so I can explain them when I go. I am looking for a female gyn who has gone thru meno so she will understand. Men doctors don't get it.. jojo

I am taking a calcium mag supplement, an oil blend which has flaxseed, the omegas and evening primrose in it, Vitex (chasteberry) and my naturally compounded progesterone cream which I am currently playing with the dosage because I can't seem to get it right.

hot flashes at night/sweating then freezing, I hate this, keeps me up most the night when this happens. Then the next day I am so tired from lack of sleep. Thank God I do have to get up and go to work anymore.
short tempered/impatient-my poor hubby
crawling skin-feels like bugs are walking on me. eeeeeeeeew I hate that.
At first my periods were regular but only 2 or 3 days long. Then I skipped 7 weeks with nothing, now in the last 40 days it has only stopped 6 days out of all that time. This is getting to me really bad, I am ready to call my doc to give me drugs. Is there any herbal thing I can take to make it stop?
My sex drive is still here, thank God for that! I do take Black Cohosh every few days, maybe that helps?
I try to remember to take calcium too but I am so forgetful........always been like that though.

52 and its been 10 years since I went through it all. But still have some symptoms

Right now it's:

Insomina (why I am on the computer so late at night til early morning)
Dont sleep as much when I do (work at home)
Dry skin...especially on the hands and feet.
Itchy skin....hands and feet.
Crawly skin....sometimes...hate that too
Skin thinning...lack of estrogen causes that and lowering of Growth Hormone. HGH suppliments and exercise has brought some of this back.
Morning aches and pains
Heat and cold temps affect me more now than used to. Although I have warm hands.

Loss of sex drive.... too dry down there and the walls are thinner one reason...it hurts if my husband is too eager and foreplay is not long enough although he is caring.
Irritable at times.
Some foods not "agreeing' with me anymore
Flatulance, yep....
Anxiety...in the beginning

Losing weight and diet was changed for the better when I took a year's worth of college lifting classes to lost the pounds when I turned 50. My energy went up and gone went any fuzzy thinking, feeling off balance or dizziness after starting this. Especially the "blues" but never had much problem with this to begin with. Always did find positive ways to recover from depression.

The lifting helps keep the pituitary gland producing HGH closer to levels when you are young. Muscle weakness went away as I built it up to increase strength.

One added bonus from menopause though....I used to get ache flareups just before and during my periods. No longer and my face has been clear for years now.

I've really been watching this board closely and have posted a couple of times. For a year I've been trying to figure out what's wrong with me. I'm really beginning to think it's all perimenopausal. I'd like to know what you ladies think.

Back in July 2003 (I was 40 turning 41 in September)
*Started having heat in my back and chest. Felt like it was radiating around from the back to the chest.
*Had a horrible sensation of my tongue burning (felt like I had burnt it on hot coffee or something all the time.
*Generally just felt bad all over.
*Started having periods closer together (every 21 days and the PMS was worse than I had ever experienced).

Had thyroid tests done and it showed way high. Put on PTU, then it swung way low. My endo. thought it was transitory thyroiditis (I also have Crohn's Disease an autoimmune condition), so he put it off on all that. The whole time I was on thyroid med none of these symptoms felt any better.

Around December I started having anxiety. Not too bad, but had trouble concentrating. Couldn't sit and have a conversation with someone without wanting to get up and leave. Very emotional and blue at times. Would have outbursts at people and that is so unlike me. Like I had no patience whatsoever and EVERYTHING was a big deal.

I discussed this with my OBGYN. Yeah--you might be in perimenopause, but no big deal was his response. The endo thought so too and put me on Effexor. It FREAKED ME OUT. Ever since then my anxiety has been horrible. I didn't sleep for more than an hour for 3 weeks. Couldn't eat. Lost 10 pounds. Had agoraphobia, panic, and generally thought I was losing my mind.

Now, 6 months later I still have the same things. I've been on valium 10/mg day since January. It lets me sleep, but I still have anxiety during the day. Plus I still have the heat in my back and tongue. I'm noticing more brown spots (moles?) and I constantly feel like I"ve been run over by a truck. My periods are still around 21 days apart and PMS week is horrible.

My doctor has referred me to a psychiatrist who I"m seeing next Monday. I suppose they're thinking it's all anxiety made worse by the obvious horrible reaction I had to the Effexor, but I'm really wondering if perimenopause isn't playing a huge part in all this. I feel like the physical symptoms are causing my mental symptoms, but the doctors feel it's the other way around. I never had bad anxiety, depression or anything close to that until all this started. I've been to several doctors who basically tell me this isn't my area and I don't know what's wrong, so out the door with you and leave your co-payment at the desk.

Sorry for this long rant, but I feel at this point ladies like you are the only ones who understand. I still feel like I"m just going crazy at times. I obviously can't take antidepressants (that was the second one I'd had a bad reaction to). Would a course of HRT be appropriate at this point? I'm going to a psych. at a medical university so I"m hoping if he doesn't think it's his area he won't just shove me out the door and at least look into other areas since he's at a teaching hospital. I can deal with the physical part, but the mental part has almost incapacitated me. Did anyone find relief from the anxiety/panic part from HRT?

Thanks so much for the opportunity to talk and any advice would be appreciated.

The best to you all.

Judy

Hi Judy. The only HRT I do is the natural progesterone creme. But you do sound perimenopause, a problem most of us are combating one way or another on this board. I would probably do Prozac, Lexapro or Zoloft instead of Ellexor and your Psych will probably change it, if not, make him/her change it. Alot of us have anxiety here. Really we do and it drives some of us up a wall. I'm one of them.

Hey Judy....
I feel almost exactly as you do!!! I feel bad for all of us!!!Started last fall with what I thought was a UTI....doc put me on flagyl and its all been downhill from there!! Isn't it fun when they think you're nuts? lol Mine put me on lexapro which I only took for 9 days because it was making me worse, but I do still take half an Ativan when I need it for anxiety. It makes me sooooooo mad when they don't realize that the PHYSICAL things going wrong with us are whats causing the mental anguish!!! I too went through a period when I was so messed up I was lucky to get one or two hours of sleep, my guts were (and still are) so messed up that I lost 25 lbs in a month, (gained it all back and more..ugh) and that scared the heck outta me, thinking I had something horrible which in turn made the anxiety and panic worse!!! I too also notice more brown spots or "moles"...find one and yippee....more panic!!! And skin tags, I hate those things. I have good days and bad, unfortunately right now it seems to be a bad spell, but I'll get through it, hopefully!
My symptoms (some starting a few years ago, but didn't associate with peri until recently...)

HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE gut problems, IBS, GERD, gas, bloating, gnawing pain in ribs, pain a couple hours after eating, no regular bowel habits anymore
Waking up every morning with the weirdest thoughts going through my brain, stuff I have NO idea where it came from, all disjointed thoughts
Some sleep disturbances
Strange one sided headaches including sinuses pressure, not really on schedule with ovulation or period onset, happens maybe a couple times a month
ANXIETY alot
Lightheadedness, foggy brained, only one episode of true dizziness
Weight gain I can't get rid of
Feeling of doom and death
Some paranoia
More general body aches
Periods of NO energy and then periods of almost manic energy
Basically I just feel like crap...and its hard to want to do anything to improve when you're in this kinda mood!

Generally my periods are still the same as they have always been, 25-28 days apart, once in a while they fluctuate and I notice more clotting, had an ultrasound in September 03 and they found a small cyst on each ovary and a small uterine fibroid, but nobody seemed too concerned about it, didn't schedule any follow up or treatment for them. I don't take any hormones but I do take Prilosec, iflora acidophillus, cal/mag, b-complex and am thinking of trying mastic gum to see if it will help my tummy troubles. Seems like any otc pain stuff is intolerable, even in the smallest doses, and I used to take ibuprophen and tylenol with no problems...not any more!!!
I haven't had the hot flashes or night sweats, my hair and skin is still okay (knock wood, I'm probably jinxing myself now lol).
Thanx for this great site!!! Its a relief of some sorts to know I'm not alone. And I've probably left out some symptoms, but chalk that up to forgetfullness!!

1awesomegranny - What a great post- great because you describe me to a "tee". I know how you feel. I am 57 and had a late menopause. Really, the symptoms started about 3 years ago while my periods were regular. Now, I haven't had one in 13 months and still have some of the symptoms - indigestion, IBS, irritable bladder and tremendous amount of anxiety. The ladies on this board have informed me that this can go on for up to two years after no periods. I hope they are right because I can be quite miserable at times. Thank you for your post and keep them coming.

1AwesomeGranny-----Yep, it sounds like we are very much in the same boat. I forgot about the skin tags--suddenly I have those things everywhere! For me my theory is that I had all the perimenopause stuff starting, then had the thyroid adventure, then the Effexor disaster just pushed me over the edge! Of course getting a doctor to believe or even listen to that is close to impossible. I have lost soooooooo much respect for the medical profession through all this that it is unbelievable. Not that I had that much to start with! :D

Hi everyone, yes it seems we all all in the same boat!!

Judy : I too started with periods closer together (like at 23 or 24 days) and the past two months they have fluctuated to every 31 days so don't know what to expect this month. The PMS is way worse and way longer. It does not necessarily correlate with the time it usually would come. My gyn , who is a woman and very understanding of all of this, said that it is like a prolonged PMS and that is it to a tee. The anxiety is a big thing for me and in March and early April of this year it was very bad for me and I was beside myself totally. The doctor and also the gyn recommended xanax to use as needed and I did at that time do so. I have not taken any since May when we flew to FLa. for vacation and that is something I do anytime we fly. anyway, the xanax did help at the time for the perianxiety and I would not hesitate to take it again if I needed to. I am now taking Vitamin B complex and Estroven which is an over the counter vitamin supplement for this peri time. It seems to work but who knows if that is it or if the symptoms have just subsided, for now!! I am always looking over my shoulder so to speak thinking they will come back to the extent they did in March which I know is not good. But generally I try to just take it a day at a time and be glad I am feeling more myself now. Just know you are not alone as we are all going thru the same things. Feel better soon!!

Conni : I can totally relate!! "Gut problems" in March and April were really a big problem for me and the anxiety I had over them made it worse I know, but I could not help it as it was all things I had never had. The doctor suggested Metamucil wafers and I think with those and the fiber I was already getting my gut problems were made worse. So I backed off on the wafers and get the fiber thru my cereals and veggies and seem to be doing ok with it and the gut situation has calmed down and back to normal. I am as I said above taking the vitamin B and the Estroven and that is the only thing I am doing differently PLUS exercising more and pilates and all that I think helps the anxiety issues lessen. You mentioned having taken Flagyl for an infection ...boy do I know that drug as a few years back I was given it too and I could not tolerate it. It messed my stomach up big time. That did and also this year the gyn prescribed Lexapro for anxiety at first and I could not take it for more than 5 days as it inflammed the situation with my intestines worse that it was. The one sided headaches you mention I get right before my periods and it is over my left eye area, like a sinus headache. I used to get them every month and then the gut problems came and the headaches left. But now the headaches are back just before period time and I can handle them a lot better than the stomach stuff that is for sure. The lightheadedness and general bodyaches too I have experienced at one time or another. And I laughed about the skin tags!! I hate those things!! Anyway, sorry for the long post but so much of what you said I related to and wanted you to know.

Andrea : how are you doing this week? Hope you are having a good week.

Hey everybody....thankx for the replies!!! I'm soooo glad to know I have company...even tho I wouldn't wish this mess on anyone, well maybe my ex husband...hehehehehe.
Today has gotten better and it brings to mind a theory I've been playing with for awhile...I am currently having my flow, and it seems like every month the first 3 days are normal (as normal as that mess can be lol) and then I "pause" for a day and thats when my symptoms are the worst!!! Then I have a day or so of just miserable gushing and clotting (isn't this the most glamorous subject? ick lol) and everything calms down!!! Seriously! Last nite and this morning I was at my most miserable, and sure 'nuf when the gushing started, everything calmed down, aired out, cooled off...don't get me wrong, I still feel kinda crappy, but its not major like it was. Anyone else have this? I sometimes notice the same around the time I ovulate...but not every month. And my headaches are over my right eye...lol but I agree, I sure tolerate them better than the gut stuff. And then again, gushing starts and they go away. Hhhmmmm....
And does anyone else feel like when they get up in the morning they're living in some alien body? Where did mine go? And what's gonna fall apart today?
OOoooo I need an attitude adjustment lol
I tell myself I need to exercise more, I only walk a bit, I have a couple pilates and yoga tapes, but ya know, some days its just too hard to get up off the couch and put them in the VCR...and then do them? NO WAY lol. And I know if I lost 30 lbs I'd feel much better, the majority of my weight is in my budda belly. Another symptom, yippee
I hope y'all are having a good day, and for the person who asked, I'm in NEBRASKA....GO BIG RED!!! (And no, I'm not a real big Husker fan, just loyality made me do that hehehehe, but don't tell 'em cause they'll kick me outta the state, they are serious about their football here!!)
I am SO glad I found you women!!!

Where do i begin? It started at 41 yrs. I am 43 now.
indigestion(cal/magnisium helps alot! recommend!)
belch like a sailor
pain in stomach, burning in esopogus
anxiety
panic attacks-on prozac(once a week)
constant worry that I am having a heart attack(had ekg, all is well)
insomnia at times
hot and cold flashes(freaky!!!!, I hate them!)
weight gain, harder to lose
infertility
Did have racing heart and palpatations-magnisisum took care of them.
ringing in the ears
There is probibly more, but thats all I can think of right now

Psalm91... I can relate to the belching! I get up in the morning and belch on the way to the bathroom!!! Take a drink of water....more belching!! And the heart attack thing, I've even went to the ER with symptoms, its scary, but like you, everything turned out okay. I've heard that "heart pain" is a symptom. And like I said before, no hot flashes yet, but I get the cold flashes too, like I'm cold right down to my bones, and its 85 degrees out and humid as heck!! AAArrrrgggghhhh! I go along with the cal/mag stuff too, it seems to help alot. The ringing in my ears was in my late 30's, so I'm thinking that's when all this stuff actually started. Seems like I go through periods of different symptoms, they come, they go, its frustrating!!

Hope everyone has an easy weekend!! :)

I bet you are 1 awesome granny! Thanks for your response! It is so good to know we are not alone in this. I get so tired of belching! It does get better with the cal/mag, but I did 2 weeks of kids camp and the food did me in. I was even getting gas pains in my left boob and I would belch and it would go away. It is taking awhile for this 40+ old stomach to recover from that processed kiddy food. I have 1 more week of kids camp to do. We leave on the 18th. My dh and I do music for kids.
I remembered 1 more symptoms
Internal jitters-shake on the inside like I am cold or something, heart rate is normal though

My symptoms started in my mid 30s with the dizzies.

anxity attacks
weight gain, 30 lbs
big time mood swings
upset stomach
heavy periods
feeling sorry for myself

Now 13 years later.....
hardly ever have the dizzies anymore
high blood pressure, under controll with meds
still have that extra 30 lbs
now my mouth is a mess from biting my cheeks and clenching my jaw [stress]
went on prozac and lexapro. Not for me
on a good note...I only have a period about every three months and they are very lite
Im hoping that Im getting close to the end of perimenopause.

My 'wierd' life began at 40 when these scary symptoms started happening:

ears ringing
itchy skin
sensitivity to cleaners and perfumed soaps
dry eyes
blurred vision
eye floaters
heavier periods
painful period cramps
28 day cycles changed to 21 days
brown discharge at end of periods
weight gain
sinus pain
red flushed cheeks
headaches around eyes
brown spots on side of face
grey hairs sprouting on top of head
woozy spacy feelings
feeling off balance at times
nausea
unable to stomach fatty foods
panicky feelings (heart pounding, feeling of fear)
craving coffee
pins and needles in feet
feeling cold
body aches
stiff neck
staying up late
worrying about little things
staying home more

eek, the list is so long it sounds depressing. actually i feel quite happy and content on my 'normal' days.

Thank you rosyposy. I thought that I was the only one who suffered from all of these symptoms. I thought that life was ending for me. I used to be quite active - hopping out of bed in the morning to take a 4 mile walk, coming home and working for the rest of the day. Read before bed and got a good night's sleep. No more! I can't walk because every muscle in my body acts up at times. I can't read because I can't concentrate and no sleep due to anxiety. Don't want to go out because I never know when the indigestion and IBS will start- not to mention the irritable bladder. I look at older women and they seem to be enjoying life. I hope that we get to that place also.

OK Started at 38
Periods were 10 days apart and lasted 10 days
Insomnia

Then at 40
DUMBNESS, not just forgetfull, totally mindblowing dumb
Depression
Anxiety
Lethargy
No energy
No motivation
Weight gain (10 stone) which brought on extremely high blood pressure
Night sweats
Hot flashes
Dry itchy eyes and throat
Incontinence
Mood swings
Cried at nothing, just did
Insomnia
Sciatica
Migraines
Aches and pains everywhere
Gas
Flatulence
Skin spots and tags

Unwanted hair (face, boobs etc)

Now at 47

Mood swings and crying are looking like they're on the way out
But everything else is still as strong as ever

What I am looking forward to
Being normal again, being motivated and having at least enough energy to go for a walk. Getting the grey hair instead of the fat, talking to people without having to ask what I was talking about or just knowing what they said to me instead of going HUH?

Hi There! Glad to see I am not alone with feeling like I am losing my mind! Here are my symptoms/story:

At 40 starting skipping periods, now at 44 it was one year this month of my last period:

Forgetfullness - lots of it
Depression
Anxiety
No energy or motivation
gained 18lbs in the past two yrs -not happy about that and when I try to diet -nothing happens
Night sweats
Hot flashes
Incontinence
Mood swings - my husband and kids look at me like I am nut case
can't sleep anymore through the night
vestibular Migraines - for over a yr now - facial numbness, heavy pressure in my head
general achiness all over my body
hiatal hernia - can't eat without paying the price for it with chest and back pain
Hair loss
Unwanted hair on my face
depressed - probably because I feel sick everyday
lack of sex drive
skin condition called Erythema Nodosum - had for twenty yrs - now it comes and does not leave for months at a time (inflamnation of the fat cells on the legs - looks like bad hives)

Well, that's it! Glad I did some research - I thought I was the only one that had all these things going wrong.

Has anyone tried bio-identical hormones? I am going to a nautropath tomorrow to look into it. I really think I need something to make me feel alive again.

Nancy:)

At age 32 I suddenly gained 30 pounds.
By age 33 my big arse turned into a big gut.
Had my first panic attack at 34.
Now at 35 (almost 36) I also have:
anxiety
eye twitches
skin tags
weird chin hairs (and in other weird places)
lightheadedness
sometimes electrical shock feeling in my head (Freaks me out)
chest pain
tingling of hands and arms and sometimes LIPS (weird)
rapid heart rate
hot flashes - sometimes sudden and sometimes gradual onset
lack of interest in things I used to like to do
Pers. are weird too - starts out with bright red spots day 1, followed by brown for day 2-3 then HEAVY for next 4 days then brown for 2-3 more days ARGH!!!
oh, and feet kill me in the morning, and sometimes I get a feeling like an ant is biting me, but nothing is there!
I feel like I'm going crazy sometimes, and that is really SCARY!

OMG
Let me count the ways!
Spaced out feeling.
Feeling faint, or like I'm having a panic attack, or almost pass out.
Twitches.
Breast pain.
Irregular periods. Some last 3 days, some last 12 days, spotting in beginning and end of period. Sometimes 20 or less days in between and sometimes 34 days in between.
Constant bloating.
Forgetting everything I've ever known. Common words, names, etc.
Headaches.
Palpitations.
Hot flashes.
Visual disturbances.
Feeling like I'm want to scream at someone for the teeniest offense.
Inability to handle stress that wouldn't have touched me in my younger days.
Can't hold my bladder as well anymore.
Oh-and my favorite-
IBS!
Vaginal dryness.
Itching, dry skin, sensation of fleas crawling, especially at night.
Decreased desire, probably because of ALL OF THE ABOVE!
And BTW-I'm 37 and have been having some of these symptoms since I was in my mid thirties.

I am so glad I have found all of you. :) Thank you for being so open and sharing your experiences. I don't feel quite so alone and wierd anymore.

Here are my symptoms: (not sure which could be perimenopause)

Extreme fatigue
Mental fog
Extremely heavy, painful periods, including clots and gushing (at times I need 2 super plus tampons and a belted undergarment)
Unpleasant vaginal odor (discharge?) only during PMS
Dizziness
A feeling of pressure around my face and head (sometimes as if my head might explode)
Fluid retention
Nausea
Very little interest in sex
Little interest in a lot of areas
Avoid social interaction – often just don’t feel like talking to anyone, but yet feel lonely at the same time.
Forgetfulness
Mood swings
Short temper
Weight gain
Constipation
More facial hair (and more hair at nape of neck so the short hairstyles I like are out of the question unless I want to wax or have laser hair removal – my beautician strongly advises against this).
Vision problems (black floaters, dry eyes, allergies – have had prescription eye drops four times this year).
I often feel too hot – always have had this problem, but worse as I get older – my head sweats a lot.
Inability to concentrate
Feeling like I’m not there
I start things with great enthusiasm (during my non PMS time), then lose interest or simply forget about them when the “fog” comes. It seems to be a never ending cycle. I feel I never accomplish anything. During my good time I am extremely positive and feel very strong and centered, as if I can handle anything that comes my way and accomplish anything I put my mind to. When the PMS (I guess) comes, I feel like I’ve lost my best friend (the strong, positive, centered, loving, deepest, inner me (I think of that dimension as “The Old Soul Who Knows”. And I know it will get better after my period starts, but I am so tired of this circle/cycle. When I’m feeling good again I have to start again with whatever the project or activity before the PMS – that is, IF I can remember what it was. ARGHHH! It is so very frustrating. I feel like I have quite literally lost my mind. I feel like I am (at least) two very different people. Also, my “good time” keeps getting shorter and shorter. Most of the time I am experiencing symptoms – premenstrual, menstrual or postmenstrual. I know there must be a reason for this, that some wisdom should be gained from this experience, but I am really having a hard time finding it.

I have tried BC pills and Sarafem. I was not happy with the results.

I am going to try some of your suggestions. Not sure which to try first.

Lack of sexual functioning (wish I had known that it was all about Estrogen and I would have had a lot more fun!)
Anxiety (thinking of all the most horrible things that could happen).
Life flashes before me, the past, the present, the future.
Patience is very short.....people irritate me so much I do not want to be around anyone at all. I want to tell everyone off.
Insecurity.
(No periods for 8 months.) The best part! No more rollercoasting every month. No more huge messes!

Hot flashes ever since my period stopped, but I have noticed that they seem to only happen in unnatural environments (indoor heating and air conditioning).
I seem to be more focused and more able to complete projects.

I found that I may not be going through menopause at all. After skipping two periods I started bleeding for 6 weeks. I went to my gyne doc and she ran a bunch of test including ultrasound, inner uterine biopsy, blood test for thyroid and pituitary gland hormone levels and she found me to be hyperthyroid. I've now lost 20 pounds, jittery, hotflashes, on edge, acne at 48.....sheesh. So I had to go find the thyroid board over here. Good luck ladies!

Hi Sarah- what are you experiencing? I know that it is unfair to take up this board with our personal chat. I have seen others do it and it drives me crazy. However, I guess that we can chat and still keep it in the realm of helping others realize that they are experiencing the same thing.

I think that we need a thread for those ladies that have not had a period for over a year. I assume that some of us are still having difficulties. Most of the menopause board is for perimenopausal women. I still wonder if I am the only one out there who still has strange symptoms and maybe most of the women don't write anymore because they feel better.

KatKat, been there years ago. The thing is, at your age, you are still perimenopause and you will still have symptoms as such even though you have hyperthyroidism also. And being that perimenopause really effects thyroid function, well you are having even a tougher ride. Go to the thryoid board and come back to visit us here also, cause we are hear for you and even though you might be taking care of the thyroid, you might still need us here.

Blessings,

Hi Sarah- what are you experiencing? I know that it is unfair to take up this board with our personal chat. I have seen others do it and it drives me crazy. However, I guess that we can chat and still keep it in the realm of helping others realize that they are experiencing the same thing.

I think that we need a thread for those ladies that have not had a period for over a year. I assume that some of us are still having difficulties. Most of the menopause board is for perimenopausal women. I still wonder if I am the only one out there who still has strange symptoms and maybe most of the women don't write anymore because they feel better.

Hey Twanger. Nope, not feeling any better and still posting here. How are you? How's the friggin anxiety with peri? Mine is still at times driving me a bit nuts.

sounds so peri but I would still have blood work done on the thyroid just to rule out.

I agree with Andrea. I suffer from thyroiditis and nine symptoms out of ten belongs to a malfuncioning thyroid. One tip: don't stick to the usual thyroid routine FT3, FT4, TSH. Make sure they check also your antibodies. That's the most revealing test.

Perimenopause really doesn't show up in blood work. It's hard to say what a normal estrogen leve is for you unless you've been watching it from the first day of your period and every single month up until now. Usually the FSH begins to climb, but in some it remains still in normal ranges. The only way to know you're in peri is from the symptoms such as irregular periods, heavy or light, frequent or far apart, anxiety and whole bunch more symptoms. I posted a subject on peri symptoms a while ago back. Possibly I will look for them and renew them to be at the beginning of this post so you can read it.

Hey twanger, and yeah I know it may seem unfair, but its very rare for me to be able to find someone that is in the same situation as me, experiencing all this after menopause is "supposedly" over with. Sometimes I worry. I haven't had any menopause symptoms at all until a few months ago, after my period had gone for at least half a year.

I have a LOT of digestive problems. constipation and frequent gas. NOT pleasant! and eating yogurt is not helping me at all. lately i've also gotten alot of vaginal discharge, like i'm ovulating or something!
Its terrible! Sometimes i even worry if it has anything to do with menopause. But I really hope that menopause is all it is.

Wow, Sarah, I guess that we are in the same boat, so to speak. I got most of my symptoms after my periods were finished also. Or so I thought. I hadn't had a period for 11 months and almost to the date of my 12th month, I got a period. I even felt better when I got it. Now, it has been 15 months and like you, I have been getting some clear discharge in the past couple of days. It's as if I am ovulating.

I also have almost constant indigestion even though I take Nexium. Have the burping, gas ( all the time) and tightening in the throat.

Have new aches and pains everyday that makes me think the worst because it is so foreign to me. I like to be active. I walk and just want to be doing things. Now, it seems as if I could become an invalid.

I keep waiting for the "post menopausal" zest that Margaret Mead talks about. How about you?

Sarah11

Actually, I haven't been taking anything at all. Just let it be, I guess. But lately, my gas problems are really reallly getting on my nerve. I eat at around 12, and I still have gas by dinnertime!

Aren't these menopause symptoms suppose to go away after a while?! It's been months! And it's getting worse!

I'm glad I found you to talk to, there's hardly any women out there sharing our symptoms! We are fairly, unique. = |

Thanks Andrea.........I had no idea that it didn't show up in the blood work........I thought thats how doctors knew!!!I'll have to look at the list of symptoms and go from there I guess.
Thanks again for your help

Sarah, someone on this board told me that the symptoms can last up to two years after your last period. I believe it was ainfante. She also has an excellent post about the symptoms of peri. One of them is the inability to digest food. The post says that it can take all night where it used to take just a couple of hours.

Try some over the counter relief, such as Zantac. I took that when my symptoms first began and then my body would not respond to it so I took previcid, Nexium and the whole bunch of PPIs.

I know what you mean that there doesn't seem to be many women posting who have finished with their periods. Maybe that is a good sign. Maybe they don't suffer anymore. On the other hand, maybe we are just unlucky. If I get time, I could ask that question by starting a new thread.

I've been reading all these symptoms. Don't know if any of you have had a hysterectomy, but whether you have or haven't, have you checked out the board called Hyster Sisters? These are women who have had hysterectomies -of all ages - who share their symptoms of menopause, give advice, etc. There are also some good articles there which were very enlightening to me. All these symptoms you list sound like what they list and designate as hormone imbalance. If you haven't had your hormones checked, it might be a good idea. I had a hysterectomy about 7 yrs. ago (kept ovaries) but started the "good" ol' symptoms just in the past few months. When my dr. checked my hormones, they were low. I had been taking Premarin, but my dr. let me change to the Vivelle *** to see if I like it. Too early to tell yet. BUT hot flashes have subsided. Joint pain, however, is getting to me. I guess I was just naive about what too much/not enough hormones can do. Anyway, good luck and check out the Hyster Sisters if you feel so inclined.

Hey twanger, thanks for the suggestions on some over counter relief. But, sometimes I dont trust those things, because I'm not sure if they contain estrogen. And excessive estrogen may lead to many unpleasant things.

I don't suppose orange juice/yogurt/magnesium would help the gas and indigestion would it?

Sarah

twanger
08-19-2004, 06:40 PM
Zantac does not contain any estrogen or hormones. It is an acid reducer and the chemical compound in the drug just neutralizes the acid in your stomach.

Yogurt and magnesium may help with the indigestion. Orange juice, however, is an acid and may make your indigestion worse.

Isn't it just so hard to accept all these symptoms as just perimenopause or menopause? I just can't get the anxiety part or the stomach problems.

I am 49 years old. i have had my periods more frequently now..about every three weeks although some months closer. they have been alot heavier. The past week though i have been experiencing bad anxiety, i feel as though i can jump out of my skin. after reading alot of your post i assume it has to do with my age and making my way to that wonderful thing all women get to experience..menopause. my sexual drive has been way down for awhile now. that part really sucks. i have the breast pain from time to time also. i know you can be put on meds for this sort of thing but im planning on riding it out as long as i can without the help of medication. I have learned that meds may take away one symptom but they can cause so many other side effects so for me i really want to do this naturally. Hopefully ill be like my mother and she didnt do that bad with menopause. the dr keeps tellin me youll follow your mother pretty much the same so we shall see.

but isnt this a joy ladies??!!

Hey Sandy. I'm with you girl. The anxiety is the worse symptom, I think. I take meds and fought my doc so much about this, but glad I began it, cause it was the only thing that saved me right now. The thing is, being into natural medicine, natural medicine can also have side effects, so either way you have risks. I know this cause been that route and also have natural doc friends who also know and have told me that natural has side effects too. And doing to much of anything isn't good either. Sometime we just have to do a little med to get back to feeling well and then once we are there, get off of it. I don't know what else to say, some women can do it without meds and they're fine but others and there are so many others, just can't do it without. I happen to be one of them right now, either that or totally jump out of my skin into another world. Dont' want to do that right now, want to be here for my little girl who just turned 9.

I will be 48 in December and here are my stymptoms:

Paranoid about my health
Anxiety
Hypochondriac
Moody
Nag my husband and kids
Think too much (analyze everything!)
Hard to concentrate
Difficulty making decisions
Allergies and asthma
Pain in mid cycle
Achey joints and stiffness
Difficulty losing weight
IBS (not diagnosed, but I know I have it)
Bladder urgency
Difficulty sleeping
Minor depression

I intend on taking a saliva test to see exactly where my hormones are. After all of this, my cycle is still regular. I started my period at 12 years old and I am almost 48. I think its time to stop!!I also have lumpy sore breasts that always freak out my doctor when I have mammograms, but they are always benign. What are we to do??? The saliva test is a little pricey, but my pharmacist compounds her own drugs, so she can tailor your dosage exactly. I need an extra $250 or so before I do it. But I think it will be worth it.

Post 2:

I just read over all the prior post to this topic and I am so shocked at how much it sounds like me!

I have also recently been bothered with:
--IBS
--headaches
--brown spots on my arms (what the heck is THAT about?)
--sweating more (stronger odor)
--lack of concentration
--weight gain (unable to loose)

I'm so thankful for this wonderful message board. My systems (all listed on my previous post to this topic) have been off and on for a year or so now and I really thought I was going nuts.

I read the very simular post here and realized I wasnt alone.

By the way, I am 44 years old, from N.C. and have the most wonderful husband who has been so supported through my ups and downs.

I found Dr Lees book on menopause at Walmart. he says the weight gain has to do with, if I understand it correctly, our bodies are going from the overies suppling estrgen to our body fat supplying estrogen. so our bodies are hanging on to fat for survival. Heavier women have more estrogen than slimmer women.. I have been thin my adult life. I am heavier now, but I have experienced hot flashes where a heavy friend of mine and my sister who is heavier have nver had one. I am still a little vain in the facty that I dont want to be heavy. But i notice that I do feel better with some extra padding.

I think I started a lot of this about 8 years ago but the worst of it has been going on for the last 4 years. It seems like every four to six weeks my hormones go completely wacky and I have a few days of "I think I'm going to die" syndrome. Body is weak and shaky, heart beats faster, crashing fatigue, depression and anxiety, hot flashes, night sweats and insomnia. These times are when symptoms are at their worst.

I did have horrible bloating for a few years and then would see saw between constipation and diarreah. Some current symptoms (in addition to the quarterly hysteria of hormone "spikes" are...
-irregular heart beat
-itchy, crawly skin
-insomnia
-anxiety
-depression
-indegestion
-aches/pains in my hips and knees
-terrible time losing weight (although lately I have been able to shave off a few pounds)
-tingling in fingers and arms

I seem to have stomach problems under control. I now take a glass of water with a spoonful of Beneful every morning when I get up and that has really helped. I work out four days a week, eat healthy and try to keep my stress level down but seems like just about anything stresses me out these days.

I haven't had a period for 8 months, 'hope that means I am finally on the road to getting out of this hormonal hell!

I'm new here and all I can say is you guys so rock for sharing all your symptoms! I'm 49 and about 2 years ago I started having the more obvious symptoms-- like skipped periods and hair loss (and growth in weird places). But over this past year, I've now added these "highlights" (?)--tinnitus, slight chest discomfort (especially pre-period), "head flush" which is probably like the freaky electric shock to the head like one person described here (and ginkgo biloba has taken care of that one for me), crabbiness (I almost took someone out on the bus today, LOL!). With a big family history of heart disease I of course feared an impending heart attack so I have quit all of my remaining junk food ways (gave up high fat last year, with a couple of setbacks) and have turned semi-vegan. But something deep inside told me most of this just must have to do with perimenopause by the timing. You are all better than the doctors--thanks!

 Well, mine started out with an empty nest syndrome -- 3 months
depressed about having an empty nest when my son started his Sr. yr. of
high school.

Then, I felt an increase in my desire!

I felt 19 in a 47-48 yr. old body! (another mid-life crisis, and I felt my mortality) I am questioning my marriage,
and the next 20-25 years. I am also wanting to get to know who I am
again after raising brood. I felt 19, but when I look in the mirror, I didn't
see a 19 yr. old!

Vaginal dryness than can pop up out of nowhere--fast!

Feel more independent.
Feel more free, especially when periods are space waaaayyy apart!

Haven't had night sweats, but will be warm, then cooler.
Will change my pj's 2 times, just to adjust.

My PMDD symptoms are subsiding at times. (severe form of PMS)
Have had many of the other symptoms mentioned in the other posts.

Do some of you lose your hair? I feel that mine is falling out all over the place. Will it grow again or am I going to be bald and need a wig? I can see some very short hairs on the top of my head so I hope it will grow back. This happened after my 2 babies too.

I haven't had a period for 6 months now and am only 43 - is this too young? I don't want to take HRT so I haven't been to a doctor.

I have hot flushes, but not too badly
I have got fat too - well - a bit fatter, not quite to blob proportions yet
I sleep badly and keep waking up at 5 am (think of me tossing and turning)
I am hot at night

Any feedback appreciated!!

Malaise is EXACTLY how it feels, you don't feel real bad but you sure don't feel good.Sick inside, but able to function.People have asked me how I feel, and aside from the usual symptoms(I can deal with hot flashes and night sweats, they suck but I could handle it)..it's the icky feeling that really keeps me from really enjoying my life. It's not really flu-like,its worse,I think.
I keep feeling like my insides are inflammed, does anyone else feel that?

i feel very much like that moonrize, i feel inside that something just is not right, now my left hand keeps going numb like i can not hold things properly, im 39, had most of my symptoms for 4 years, but the numbness i have had for about a week, it started as pins and needles first been getting that for about 8 months, i to can put up with hot and cold feeling, but the icky feeling day in day out is the worst, i feel a lot older then what i am,and i feel quite scared of whats to come ( vaginal dryness ) no sex drive, had bloodtests done this week, go back next week sometime to get results, doc talking about putting me on HRT, see what the test show.

My back pain gets really bad at times, and sometimes I still feel really ill. Some women on another board told me that peri shouldn't cause me to feel "sick"...but it seems otherwise for so many of us.Now theyv'e got me worried I've got something else going on...but after a pelvic/abdominal CT scan came back clear, and all blood work, nothing else can be found~

Hi. I know this thread isn't supposed to be funny, but I was cracking up reading this. Ok, I'm 51 and guess so far I've had it easy. BUT...I've always had depressin problems so I'm already on Paxil, and have been for ten years, so I assume that is helping. Also, I take all sorts of vitamins, including E and Black Cohosh, and exercise five days a week, which is my torture time every day...lol.

List:
Temp dysregulation: I'm either too hot or too cold and change clothes 100 times a day, open and close windows too, etc. (drives hub nuts)

Feel like I'm going to have my period when it's not time (I still get it..yup...and just this year started having some closer together. Am I going to get pregnant and be on the cover of the Enquirer???? I'm too old to keep getting it)

Back pain in lower back (lots of Ibprofen)

Lately been worrying more about my health and that of my kids, but meds have panic under control (I take Klonopin on top of Paxil)

Sometimes racing heart, although my heart scan was normal

That's it for now.

Kali

I just wanted to say that I had a lot of your symptoms. I am 49, almost 50 now. They said my thyroid was normal also, but I went ahead and started treating myself with one grain of Armour thyroid--you can get it on the internet without a prescription and also you can get Nature-Throid! I've noticed a world of difference. My depression has lifted, I am losing weight, but slowly (more inches than weight, which is good) and I don't have to starve! I still do my exercise bike about 4 times per week for 45 minutes. My sex drives are coming back also! IN addition, I use natural progesterone cream twice daily, rotating the areas I apply. Don't listen to what regular family docs say about your thyroid because you could be borderline and they won't treat it if you are. Get a copy of your lab results and ask for free T3 and free T4 in addition to TSH! Go check out the thyroid boards! GOOD LUCK EVERYBODY!

Yeah, I agree about the thyroid stuff. I'm going through menopause also, but take a closer look at your thyroid first. For TWENTY years of hell I've endured thyroid problems, most of which can be found on the list of symptoms in the previous posts, BUT INSTEAD of listening to my SYMPTOMS, the blasted doctors went by tests that said, NORMAL! Problem is.........IF you don't DEMAND that the doc does a "thyroid antibodies" test (because most of 'em just don't) you'll never really know for sure IF your problem is in your thyroid or elsewhere. And as one Endo told me......if your thyroid is sick, so is the rest of you, and you ain't gonna get better until IT gets better.

I went to the thyroid forum on here and they told me to order the antibody (for thyroid) test myself on line. And what-da-ya-know.......I tested Positive for Hashimoto's thyroiditis. GRRRRRRRR. And now, I'm trying to deal with menopause on top of getting my thyroid straightened out. I wish I had known about that test 20 years ago, sigh.

By the way, Armour thyroid is wonderful. Sooooooo smooth and natural on one's body. SillySunday, glad to see you on Armour.

Be healthy! :)

Thanks a lot! I'm really glad I found these boards. YOu can learn so much. I do feel a little guilty about self-treating with Armour, but I always check my temp and pulse and they are fine! I think I might have Hashi's also. I didn't get checked for the antibodies, just Ft3 and Ft4 and TSH. My TSH is suppressed now that I take Armour, but my T3 is still a little low, as is my T4. I think I might have trouble converting T4 to T3. My doc wants me to come in because of my suppressed TSH (he doesn't know I am self-treating); what should I tell him?

Okay, so I turn 39 tomorrow and these symptoms have been going on for about a year and a half:
-left shoulder pain
-left arm achiness
-chest pain (all cardiac stuff ruled out)
-major anxiety -- think I'm having a heart attack all the time (on zoloft)
-headaches
-fevers (low grade)
-muscle twitches all over body
-extreme fatigue
-general body aches
-indigestion
-sour taste in mouth
-some nausea
-irregular periods (21-40 day cycles-- lasting anywhere from 1-12 days)
-very heavy periods lasting up to 6-7 days with 4-5 days of spotting after
-heart palpitations usually only during periods or when spotting
-sleep deeply until about 2am then wide awake (usually worrying!)

These symptoms usually last about 4-5 weeks. They start either just before or during my period. I have had about 6 of these "episodes" over the past 18 months.

My doctor (female-about 50yrs), doesn't think this is all peri - but really has no other ideas. She thinks it could all be anxiety related. Ideas?

You might be going through perimenopause. I started noticing symptoms around 40, which is just a bit older than you. YOu probably should get your thyroid checked also. You have some of the symptoms of low thyroid and when you start going through menopause it messes with your thyroid!

I use natural progesterone cream, which helps a lot of the symptoms.

Good luck!

Hey Alir...thank you, thank you, thank you. Reading your post made me feel so much better. I started having all those symptoms the month before I turned 39. I am now 40 and things are just as bad. The left arm and shoulder pain is so scary. I have it all the time it seems. My gyn said it can't be peri I am too young but my gp is trying to help. Has your dr given you any suggestions to what to do to alleviate the symptoms? I got some good advice on here about the insomnia that I hope will help. This is the pits. I thought at 40 I would be feeling so good boy that didn't happen. Let me know if you have found any relief.

Hey Captain14,
All my doctor has done has prescribed Zoloft to help with the anxiety. It has helped somewhat as I am not feeling so emotional over how crappy I'm feeling! I have also started going to a holistic chiropractor who is really helping. He does all this weird stuff (muscle testing, rebalancing your aura etc.) but I do feel a bit better. He totally thinks it could be peri. This board really helps too. You realize that so many other women are going through exactly the same thing and you don't seem so alone. Good luck to you.

I'm having a hard time with this. I have all the symptoms all of you are saying and yet my family doc says I'm to young.I had my last child 12 yrs ago and had tubs tied right after my doc said it wouldn't cause early menopause but yet every year my periods get worse. I sometimes wear 2 to 3 pads at a time, and bleed through on my clothes. All I want to do is cry and everyone and everything gets on my nerves.I can't remember anything half the time. I just want to be alone and I know my children need me and that keeps me going but at times they really get on my nerves but then when I sit and think about it , it's me not them and I never want sex any more and hubby is getting very moody about it and says I need help. I started feeling this way when I turned 32 I'm now 37 and it's worse than ever I feel like I'm losing my mind. Any suggestions?

I don't know if you are too young to be going through peri. Some women start to go through it at your age. Peri is a state in which your hormones are out of whack and there are other things that can cause this, such as thyroid problems, or just that your hormones need to be regulated.

Maybe some other women can tell you how young they were when they started. There may be older posts discussing this or you could start a new thread. Anyway, something is causing this and maybe an endocrinologist could help you with different hormone levels or thyroid conditions.

Psalm are you also feeling that spacey feeling? This morning I work up feeling almost 100% like my old self!!!!!!!!!! Thank You Jesus! Then I guess my estrogen must have dipped further out of range and I felt a bit lightheaded again. I vaguely remember, when I was an adolescent, older women talking about feeling dizzy or faint. I wonder at times if they were experiencing hormonal imbalance.

Oh, I went through that gas stage...but, then it passed :D LOL. All joking aside I really did experience that for sometime until I made some modification to my diet. I eat lighter meal and less carbohydrates, and this seem to have been very helpful. Every now and then I have to pop a Nexium.

Yes I do get that kind of distant feeling, like I am in a dream. I was grocery shopping is W*lm*rt today and felt that. Got home, ate lunch and little by little felt better. I feel it when I am teaching piano too. I only teach about an hour to an hour and a half, so I just push through. I really thought I was going to lose my mind this afternoon, but once my bloodsugar came up, I felt better. My gas is better. We are having a gorgeous day is Texas today and it was still light at 5:45, so I went walking till 6:15 when it got dark. I was so happy while walking. Since our days are getting a bit longer, I told DH that I want to walk every evening at 5:30 or so. But yes to your question, my head was buzzing away at wally world, but I just did what I needed to do. I ordered a progesterone cream off of Ebay from a pharmacy is Austin Texas. I think it is making a differance

Isn't that spacey dream like feeling totally weird? I wonder if it's from lack of estrogen to the brain LOL. BTW, yes the weather was lovely in Texas yesterday, but today it's cold and raining. The wind was so bad that I thought I was going to fly away this morning. Now it's pouring down rain and thundering. Last week it was 24 degrees then yesterday in the 70's...only in Texas :D . Since I've not taken any hormones for two days I had major heat waves, spaciness, and then my hair flying all over my head because of the wind. What a sight :D! I also like when it start staying light longer. In about another week we should really see a big difference.

I am post-menopausal for 3-4 years. I also felt ALL of the above, and short of not having a period anymore they are all still there.

Anxiety
Neurotic (feel that EVERYTHING is wrong with me)
No sexual desire WHATSOEVER! Poor husband...
Hot flashes still..tried to look for triggers but found none
Heart palps and weird feelings in chest
Leg cramps
Depression
Can't sleep thru the night...have not slept thru the night in four years...1 1/2 hr stretches only
Cranky from sleep deprivation...poor kids
BIG doom feelings

My question is this...they can make a drug for men to have enlarged penis's (sp?) but they can't come up with a drug for women in pre or post menopause that won't cause cancer, which brings me to my last symptom of extreme ANGER!

Because no one understands or accepts how serious menopause can be nor do they care about what women have to go thru...in the meantime, we suffer, live a poor quality life, end up spending lots of time/money on drs. with no results, and a ridiculous amount of money on drugs/vits/supplements that MIGHTcould do something to us later....women have it rough, always have, always will...

MsMuss

Thanks for that Molly! Since menopause, daily life is very hard to get thru for me. I try to talk myself up and that works sometimes. Nothing is fun anymore. When the gyno gave me hrt 3 1/2 years ago, it gave me a nasty ovarian cyst after just taking the drug for 4 months. Took two years for that to go away. Never had one before in my life. He gave me Prozac, that made me feel disconnected from my body. I have tried everything over the counter made with no success. I have tried natural remedies....no help. If this is to be my life until I die, (I am only 50) I don't know that it is worth it. My two kids keep me grounded and I would never do anything foolish, however I feel so helpless and hopeless. It is like walking around in a fog all the time and nothing is every clear to you.

They are not completely gone, yet. However, I feel good more days than not. I don't think that I am unique in that I feel better than last year. There for awhile, every year was getting worse. Now I am headed in the other direction.

Along with pelvic pain and pressure as a symptom (in addition to many already listed here), does anyone have rectal/bowel pressure/achiness? When I thought I had it all, here is a new one!

perimommy

I have the pelvic and rectal pressure too....here are my others I listed in another thread. They can't figure out why I have pelvic pain

My symptoms:

Pelvic pain - off and on, dull aches, sometimes crampy

Cramping - before, during, after a period. Sometimes mid cycle. Sometimes every day. Cramps get worse with BM sometimes.

Gas - Ugh... horrible abdominal gas, bloating, swelling. For the past week the bloating and swelling has just been there off and on. Today, its just there constantly, building. I feel like a balloon.

Periods - Never on time, sometimes early or late. Spotting mid cycle, or after a period. Sometimes prolonged up to 10 days. Not many heavy clots, just some days of gushing, then it levels off to spotting. Im so sick of seeing blood

Bladder infection symptoms - It hurts. Burns. Sometimes I have to make effort to go. Yet, after 5 urine tests, 3 cultures done, no sign of infection. I can't hold it too long, like I used to.

Mild Flashes - Sometimes I feel Warm all over, and need the door opened. Then I switch off to being so cold I turn up the furnace. I can't sleep without a fan on me.

Moods - Happy, Depressed, Teary, then just bawling my eyes out. Angry, enraged, ready to snap. I don't want to leave the house or deal with anyone. Im okay with the girls and husband, but going out seems too much. Everything in my life is starting to feel like its too much, the simple mundane things.

The symptom that bothers me the most, is never finding a comfortable body temperature. I'm either too warm or too cold. Day or night, it's off with the sweater and in 5 minutes I'm putting it back on. In bed, the covers are alternatly pulled up to my chin or thrown off to the side. Thankfully, I only had the night sweat thing once. That's my major menopause complaint, but it's a small price to pay for not having to go through having a period.

Only two of the six years were bad. The first four were fine. I just had periods that were irregular and a few hot flashes that were not bad, just an anoyance. I even went back to school and got a degree. I would have times where I would miss several months of periods and then they would become regular again. I also had some spotting at times.

That was the four years. Not bad. Then came the two from hell. I stopped my periods for 11 months and then had one more. I am now approaching two years without one. Did have some spotting during those times. At this time, I started to have all the 35 symptoms but not all at once. Just rotated through them at 2-4 week intervals. It caused much anxiety because I didn't know what was going on. I wasn't sure if these were something serious or just meno.

The problem with the symptoms is that they can all be signs of some disease that is bad. The frequent urination that doesn't respond to antibiotics = bladder cancer. The intense itching = Hodgkins and on and on. I am a nurse, so that doesn't help.

During the first four years, I actually thought that meno was going to be a breeze and I would get through it naturally. I really didn't know what other women were complaining about. The last two years were hell and that is when I started on these boards.

I didn't take anything although many, many times I was going to. I could have been a doctor's office every single day. The feelings of anxiety and gloom and doom put me in a state that I could not even be reasonable.

I tried to read everything I could about meno and got some books on CBT because I thought that I was having a break down. These helped. I also tried to walk and get outside and exercise. That helped the most.

I am not finished with the symptoms yet. However, it is much, much better than last year at this time. I hope this helps.

I still have symptoms but not as bad as last year or the year before.

I still get hot flashes but not as bad. I still get irritable bladder but it doesn't last that long. I still have anxiety but it does not put me down as it did before. The itching is gone. Most nights I can sleep and the weight gain is somewhat under control. The aches and pains ( knees, legs, back and shoulders) are there but not as bad as in the past.

Certainly, I don't feel as good as I did before all this started but I feel so much better than the past two years.

I see much older women than I walking, exercising, and enjoying life and looking pretty fit. So I can only surmise that this keeps getting better. I hope so.

This is day 6 without any hormones. I stopped my birth control pills and Vivelle in order to find out my fsh level and then decide from there what to do next. Tomorrow I have the blood work done and then I should know something in a couple of days.

As far as symptoms go I'm sitting here with the jitters, which I haven't had in almost a year, nervous, anxious, spacey, lightheaded, and tired. Although I have these symptoms they are wayyyyyyyy better than what I've experienced in the last three years. Just knowing that all of this is hormone related an nothing terminal helps me to endure. Even though these symptoms are annoying realizing that they aren't as intense reassures me that the end is near. Once upon a time I couldn't go 2 days without taking my birth control pills, now I'm on day 6!!!

Oh, btw I've been taking flaxseed, primrose oil, soy isoflavone, lecithin, B6, calcium, and magnesium the last couple of days and they seem to help take the edge off many of my symptoms. They don't totally eliminate them, but I'm able to endure.

It does get better.

:bouncing: Molly123...I have often wondered how I keep going on...you just sort of operate in a fog. I tried hrt for 4 months when I first was menopausal and that did nothing but give me an ovarian cyst (which I have never had before in my life any gyno probs) so that ended that. I guess you just get used to it, but it is NOT a good time!!

Hi,

I am 50 and made my first post to this board two years ago. Last year I had the most problems with this peri thing and posted on and off during the year. My peri problems were at its height early last year.

When I saw that this thread had been revived I thought it would be interesting for me to look at where I was last year when I posted in answer to this thread when we were all sharing our symptoms and where I am now with the symptoms. I thought it would be helpful to me and hopefully helpful to others. I will put my comments now in parenthesis. Here is what I wrote last year when this post first came up :

"is not continual, in that I am not having these symtpoms all the time but the past few years have had them ":
(NOW : this is still true, it is not continual , it is on and off it seems, some months worse than others).

"Nightsweats -more so a few months ago, with palpitations when I first got them, now seem to get them nightsweats only occassionally and not badly." (NOW : do not get nightsweats really at all. Have been warmer during the night but not where I am sweating with the palpitations)

"Prolonged PMS --meaning everything I normally would get with PMS ....moodswings, anxiety, feeling tired, again not as bad recently, but was really at a peak this March and early April. In general my perimenopause has been mostly a prolonged feeling of Pms though."
(NOW : this is still true. The worst was late last Feb into April. Some months I have had longer PMS symptoms than others. My periods have generally now come anywhere day 24 day 40. The last two I have had were at day 32. And the pms symptoms started like I was going to get my period at day 24. I would not mind getting my period at day 40 something or 50 something (that happened once last year) but it is the fact that at those times I still have pms symptoms all leading up to it that is frustrating still. Again it does not happen all the time and last year , at least the first half of the year it seemed to be that PMS was more prolonged and I was bothered by it more each month).

"Cramps are usual before my period but I can get them a bit week before. (NOW : still true)

"Periods used to be every 28 days but in my early to Mid 40s they got to be where I could get them 22 days apart to 24 days. Have had two times in 2003 where it came at day 40 and then one cycle where it came on day 50. This year, 2004, it has been day 25 until 2 months ago when I have now got it at day 31. Flow is very short for the most part...3 days. Have had times where it will come for 2 days, then nothing and then reappear a few days later, just lightly or brownish discharge."
(NOW : Haven't had the brownish prelude that I had, but some times in the past year have had the brownish stuff or a bit of staining a week after my period for a couple days (have had this all checked out and it is not anything other than peri. My periods still are as they were a couple years ago...3 days tops as far as the entire thing)

"Breast tenderness , although this is normal for me with my period and it comes only at that time."
(NOW : not as much or frequent as before , but it does happen occasionally)

"Intestinal discomfort...diarhhea at times week before period. more of an irritable bowel and gas in peri. "
(NOW : I still can get this and more so week before my period, where early last year it seemed like it was for longer periods of time. The IBS problems and gas, etc. were really a big problem for me. Have had a touch of that this week and was very upset , thinking that it is all coming back again, but it is nowhere (at least not yet) near where it was then)

"Aching at time of what would be ovulation, in the area of ovaries and also referred type of aching in that area and above, like across from navel"
(NOW-had not had this in awhile and then this month at midcycle , where I am now, I am having it. This feeling always freaks me out and causes me anxiety. But I am trying to tell myself that it has happened before and for a long period of time and it was fine, have been to the doctors and gyn and so I know it is all related to this time. But guess I was just disappointed to be feeling it again. I know that anxiety will worsen my feelings though from experience, so I need to keep it in check!!)

"Back problem that I have (unrelated to peri) is at times more flared up during cycle."
(NOW --this remains to be very true. And it seems to coincide with the achiness I talked about above. The gyn has told me that the pelvis is connected of course to the hip and back and that it all interacts and if one has back issues they will have more of these twinges all related to peri)

"Anxiety--My only complaint until early March was just the shorter times between cycles and a bit more pms issues. "
(NOW --I feel that Anxiety has been and continues to be the worst of it all for me. It is hard to control. I have not taken the Xanax since the time mentioned above last year in the period of time from March to April when needed and then I found I needed to take one late last year when my anxiety seemed to be high about symptoms one month. This month I feel I might need to take it but have not. I have not been as faithful to the Estroven as I was and I am starting to go back to taking it . Still taking the Vitamin B complex. The exercise , right now, has not been consistent due to the back flare up, but I am slowly getting back on schedule. I think this will help as it has in the past. )

In looking over my post from earlier last year and reviewing how I am doing now I think the worst symptom of all for me that I have had to cope with is as I said is the anxiety and the intestinal stuff and I think they go hand and hand for me. I think when the intestinal stuff happens I get more anxious and it makes it all worse . Board members have helped me and supported me thru this all and shown me that a lot of people out there are dealing with anxiety and a lot of similar issues. It has been more as i said, in check than it was earlier last year, but it has reared its ugly head since then at times and I can deal with it usually better than I did earlier last year. And I worry it will come back the way it was before. That is where I am this month..hoping it will not come back to that extent (any of the symptoms!!) The achy feeling I mentioned in the pelvis area really always throws me for a loop as far as getting anxious about it. I know others have felt it and that is good to know that I am not alone in that.

Since I am 50 and this has been going on for a few years, I am hoping that it is waning a bit, and am trying to be patient...hard to do!!

Anyway, thanks for letting me review and hope it helped someone in the process.

Thanks for all your continal help, it is good to know that one is not alone in all this and the way we are feeing.

I was about 43 when the night sweats began and over three years, more was added. My last period was when I was about 46 and I am now 50 and STILL experiencing all the symptoms except I have no period. I don't think those symptoms will ever go away. I have not slept thru the night for 4 years.

Thanks guys.. we women sure get the short end of the stick!
I am going this weekend to get one of those home test that tells you if you are in or entering menopause. I have noticed internal as well as external changes for the last two years. Sometimes I look in the mirror and don't recognize the reflection I see. My moods are terrible and the headaches are awful. A year ago they diagnosed me with a heart disorder because my heart was racing all the time. The more I read the more I wonder if that wasn't my first sign of impending perimenopause?

Hi Bell,

In answer to your question, I am 50 but I started noticing changes in my cycle around the age of 45 or 46 I think. I had palpitations around that time too , if not a bit before really. Everything checked out fine and they said my electrolytes were low and to drink more water!! Which I did and do now. I now read that it is a symptom of peri. (palpitations) and so I think that is what that was all about.

The intestinal stuff did not happen till these past couple years. But my stomach has always been senstive and acting up around my period and also my PMS has always been bad. my gyn said whatever you had in PMS before will be more pronounced during peri and I have found that to be so.

I still have my period and do not see any big changes in that as far as it going a long long time before I get one. Had one time a year ago or more where it came on day 40 and then another time on day 50 but other than that it has been where it comes anywhere from day 23 to 34. (last two times on day 34).

I detailed the symptoms I have had and still have and those I do not have as much of anymore, in a previous post so won't repeat that. But suffice to say, some days are better than others in the peri world for me!!

Hope this helps.

Take care.

Hi Bell,
I'm one of the "luckier" ones I guess...I didn't start having peri-meno symptoms or at least ones that cause me run to so many drs. and to fear I was dying or something until I was 50-1/2 yo. It came on suddenly and hit me like a ton of bricks!

I had insomina for years but never made the correlation that it had anything to do with peri-meno. I think I started having irregular periods around 43 yo.

I have ALL the symptoms I think. Today was a bad day. I didn't get dressed until noon and felt bloated all day. i got very sleepy after lunch and laid down for awhile. I feel like I get nothing accomplished. I feel a little better tonight. I tried to remember what I had to eat ane today I've had a lot of bread. Sometimes I wonder if I have a wheat allergy! I go for my hormone evaluation Saturday morning and I can't wait to hear what she has to say. She said it would last about an hour and a half, so that means I will have time to ask lots of questions. But I have palpatations, digestive problems, low libido, foggy thinking, apathetic, gain weight, very dry skin, a few night sweats, blood sugar a little high, cravings, aching joints, urinary urgency, allergies, asthma,..... if any one out there has a problem with wheat let me know. I'm wondering seriously if there is a connection. My saliva test showed a little high in estrogen, definitely low in progesterone and a little low in testosterone, and DHEA. Can some one tell me what DHEA is? Thanks

I can only respond to your question about wheat allergies. I am allergic to wheat, dairy, corn, and legumes. Amazing, huh? I used to get congested, cough a lot and produce a lot of phelgm. Got tested over 10-15 yrs. ago. I had to go on an elimination diet for 3 mos. and then slowly started eating these food groups again. I don't cut out all food groups now but try not to eat too much of the same thing all the time. If you think you're allergic to wheat, stop any wheat product for at least a month and see if you notice any difference. Wheat and dairy are the two food groups that most people are allergic to.

You can have two separate things going on with you - an allergy and peri-meno symptoms too. Most food allergies often shows up as respiratory and skin problems (hives, swelling).

I do eat wheat now - I just have to make sure I don't eat too much or everyday. Dairy seems to affect me more so I never eat ice cream or too much chocolate. When I was on the elmination diet, I ate rice and oat products and lots of meat and veggies only. I should do it again! It was a good way for me to lose weight!

Thanks for the suggestions, Molly. I forgot about rice. I'm sure they make crackers, bread, etc, out of rice that I could pick up at the health food store. I love salads, but like croutons in them. Maybe I could crush up a rice cake or something and put in it! Ha!

I think I've been in menopause forever, Iam 60 and it isn't over yet.
I think everyone has covered everything I've had, or am still having.
the one thing that I've found to be the most helpful is magnesium,
it helps with internal shaking, it stops mind racing, it helps with the feelings of coldness, it helps with vertigo, and feeling like your ear is submerged in water or stuffed up, it helps calm your nerves, and takes away the jittery feelings, it helps with heart palpitations,
it lessens the pain around your period. It helps with those times when your depressed and gloomy and feel impending doom, bad dreams. They usually advise 500 magnesium and 1000 to 1200 calcium for menopausal women, but studies are showing that it should be more like a 1000/1000 mg magnesium and calcium. The lose of estrogen seems to keep our bodies from picking up the magnesium and calcium in our system, and as time goes along we need more and more to compensate for the continual lose of estrogen also you should take vitamin D 400mg to help your body absorb the minerals better. alot of doctors just don't have the nutritional background and so don't pay much attention to these symptoms unless its a last resort, others are more informed. But even the tests they do use don't always show just how low you are. I was hospitalized before they actually found that I was low in magnesium. Magnesium will cause diahrea if to much is taken but it won't hurt you unless you decided to OD on the stuff. Hope this helps.

just to let you all know the lump in the throat you all talk about is a thing called globus hystericus, its an anxiety thing, nothing to worry about in fact that makes it worse, try to ignore it then it goes away, also the left eye twitching is also an anxiety symptom.
i know all of this because i have the worse anxiety ever and after taking the ssri celexa/citalopram my anxiety is worse than it was before, been off it now for 4 1/2 months but still suffering big time.
i also have most of the problems you all have and also a thing called rosacea which again is stress related.
one of the worst problems i have is constantly feeling shivery and cold especially when trying to relax or resting, this symptom is anxiety related and it is a bummer.
my docs are unsure wether i am in peri or not, but i am 48 so it looks likely.
i will get through this it is not going to beat me, i have decided to fight this all the way
good luck to you all, and remember you are not alone

I read all of the postings about menopause "discomfort" and I am getting REALLY angry! How is it that the medical community, which is pretty much made up of men, leave this large percentage of women to suffer? They came up with a drug for Erectile Dysfunction but they can't manage menopausal side effects? You know, women suffered horribly and died in childbirth quite often until really just recently. I don't think the medical community or pharmaceutical research community really care at all about all of us. They just want to shove anti-depressants off on us or drugs that cause cancer of the breast/uterus. It would not surprise me if doctors thought it was all in our heads. Just thinking about all of this frustrates me terribly, because I DO feel all of what all of YOU are feeling, and I know it is real.

Bell99
03-04-2005, 11:37 AM
Isn't that the truth. It's not just Menopause and Perimenopause they do this with either. They shove pills down your throat for anything and everything. I made sure to get a women Dr. who would understand what we go through. I think having a male Dr. for this is a big mistake.
I go Next Friday and want to have my hormone level tested I am almost 42. I know one of the first things she will tell me is "you'r too young".
Most of what the Dr. prescribe is only through the knowledge of what the Drug Reps tell them. They also get kick backs from prescribing certain drugs. I have two friends who are ER nurses who tell me often the Dr. don't know much about meds. I know just from educating myself more about these drugs than they do!
This is the key, Educate yourself, Arm yourself with as much knowledge as you can before you go. Don't let them rush you out the door or disregard your symptoms and feelings.
Last year I got all my Medical Records from 5 different Dr.'s I was Horrifed at the mistakes in every single chart. It was at that point I said enough is enough. I get a copy after each visit now. I had allergic reactions to meds that weren't even noted in my charts!

Reading the posts have supplied me with a much clearer picture of what I may expect over the next however number of years until I finally reach "menopause" - that one day when I will not have had a menstrual period for a continuous year. I feel as if it will be a bittersweet event. I want to sincerely thank all who have shared their experience on this site!!!

Having read enough (I got tired!) of the postings here, I have come to the conclusion I am doing pretty good!!! I have experienced the following, and only over the last 3/4 year or so (just turned 46 last October), in most severe order:

1. Cold flashes "clammy" feeling, only when at rest;

2. Sleep disturbances (harder to fall and remain sleep), also waking more easily during the night (ready to throw my very loud snoring boyfriend out!!), and then having difficulty falling back to sleep (can't shut off my mind); and

3. Period irregularities (cycles run from short to long, slow start but heavier, and longer lasting at times, other times "normal" - r-e-a-d BEFORE peri -, mild PMS to none at all) - just don't know what to expect from one period to the next.

I take spinning classes regularly and consistently, as well as weight train; take all antioxidants I can get my hands on plus the important-for-my age vitamins and minerals (such as calcium), eat soy products (edamame - steamed young soy beans in pod - at least three times a week for the estrogen, although it is my understanding if breast cancer runs in the family, all estrogen high foods are out), fish (love all types of fish, plus sushi), veggies and chicken , drink lots of green (and chamomile when I feel I need or want to relax) tea as well as lots of water and NO soda or diet products/drinks. Red wine is actually good, in moderation.

I have been using stevia (natural sweetener used by diabetics - no calories/does not affect blood sugar levels) for about 4 years now, and try to adhere to a healthy lifestyle (stress management for one). I don't take any Rx medications, my blood pressure is quite normal, cholesterol is total 180 with very low tryglicerides and my weight is ideal for my height; although, without a doubt, I do have to work out harder than I used to in my late thirties or early forties to keep trim. My knees are not what they used to be, and I occassionally experience hip (left side - iliac crest) and lower back pain, so I have become more aware of my posture, but I view this, at least for now, as "normal wear and tear".

I do find myself craving sweets more than ever before in my life, so I "reward" myself occassionally (and moderately) with any of the following: 1) lowfat frozen yogurt or sorbet (there are many delicious flavors and types to choose from), 2) vanilla (my favorite) low fat ice cream, 3) a few small sized peppermint patties, 4) or organic dark (NOT milk) chocolate. Another good habit I have adopted recently is taking wheatgrass shots (a drink).

Point being, WE CAN considerably lessen our discomforts by adhering to a healthy lifestyle and doing all we can nutritionally and by staying active, and most importantly, keeping a fresh outlook and positive attitude.

I'm hoping I can "naturally" control all those horrible symptoms I've read about without having to do the HRT thing. So far, I've found that melatonin and valerian help greatly with the sleep disturbance issue.

This is an inevitable transition in our lives, we should learn how to find ways to go through it all!! PEACE

Last year I had so many of those symptoms, I was 48 then. Then one day I started my period and it would not stop, finally after 5 weeks I saw my gyne doc. Long story short and a bunch of test I found my thyroid was going nutso on me. It straightened out on its own within 6 months but wow did I feel bad. I felt good all fall and winter but now I just went 8 weeks without having a period. I started again the other day. I had a few hot flashes, that seemed more like a sugar low and felt better after I ate. I told my husband I don't know if I actually had a sugar low, or my thyroid is going hyper again or its menopause, they all three do the same thing to me.
Here is my game plan, eat fish once a week, increase vegies and soy products, take vitamins and calcium supplements, increase my exercise (uhg) and just try to eat more healthy and last but not least, NOT DWELL ON HOW BAD I FEEL when I am feeling bad. I think many times that is the biggest thing people do wrong, they dwell on it.
good luck ladies, try to remember, menopause is a NATURAL occurence.

 Hi to everyone.Hi to Julie 39180.I am 32 and never realy thought about the menopause until i looked through the boards.I suffer a lot of the symptoms that you get but i never thought of them as being related to one thing. The old myth was that it didn't happen to women so young but it has been proven otherwise by so many women.Luckily for me i don't get the periods as i'm on the depo injection and have been for nearly 12 yrs.Being a woman comes with its problems doesn't it,but i wouldn't swap it for the world! good luck to everyone and thanks for all the info.

Thought it must be my turn

Periods closer for a while
Periods further apart biggest gap so far is 65 days
Flooding
Lighter periods followed by heaviest last month
spotting
brown discharge - these last 2 seem to have stopped now
reflux (silent)
loss of sexual desire
Lack of enthusiaam or motivation for life in general
Sore breasts for up to 12 days before period
Luckily that is now lessening.
Muscle twitches mainly in legs at night - so annoying
Aching thighs
Eye twitching as well last few days
Sleeplessness - one of worst symptoms
Iron Count all to hell
Electric shocks under skin -
Pain all over - not major but annoying
Terrible wind and pain with it.
Skin tags appearing along with wrinkles
Headaches
Light headedness - woozy head
Memory Fog - what was my name again?
Stomach cramps
The real biggie is ANXIETY about most things but I am getting better!

Don't get flushes, but do get a strange feeling through my body then suddenly I feel really cold. I guess I must've got hot in order to feel that!

Jude

After posting this I also realised that ghastly buzzing in my left foot is also another one.

Jude,
Thanks for posting. You are the first person I've seen with so many of the muscle issues like I have. The sore thighs especially... Hot flashes aren't an issue for me either....but the anxiety...OH my. How have you gotten through? I think my anxiety is because of the wierd muscle stuff!

Hey lady let me give you some advice. If you are only 34 you are not having symptoms of menopause it is something else entirely, UNLESS you are going through it eary which is kind of rare. It did happen to my cousin. Either way you need to talk to a doctor and find out what is going on.
People????? PLease do not self diagnose it could be something serious. Last year I thoought I was going through menopause I was 48 last year and had all the sypmtoms. It got worse and worse. Thankfully I was smart enough to call my gynecologist, she ran a bunch of test and they all came back normal, finally she ran one more and found that I was hyper thyroid. Hyperthyroidism can damage the heart if left untreated. Do not blame menopause on everything even though it feels like what you read about it. SEe your doc!!!

dwp it's a tough time for us all isn't it. My muscle twitches have started to lessen considerably as my period lessen and become more erratic. I always got them in the middle of the night, and I've learnt to get straight up and take a mild painkiller (panadol) which helps me relax and drop back off to sleep quite quickly. Only thing that helps. Also helps with the thigh pain.

Anxiety is a 'beach' for sure. I've struggled with it for a fair while now, only health related. I think we have so many things going wrong, it becomes a way of life for us to worry. So when nothing is wrong we wait for the next thing to hit. If we only knew before menopause starts that this will happen, we might be much better able to cope.

I found a counsellor who works with hypnotherapy an incredible help to me. She gave me some wonderful coping mechanisms, and also taught me how to relax myself. Maybe you could find someone to help you. Praying I also believe has been my saviour many times. Can't hurt if you are at all that way inclined.

I have it all as well (add you list of symptoms here)..except maybe cramps...I've never had this problem but boy an I paying the price now...meno at 41. I was actually diagnosed with hypo thyroid/hishimoto. Started taking meds got MUCH MUCH worse. Went from doc to doc. 2 years later they are starting to get somewhere and find that my pituitary is also a bit of a mess. Taking lots of meds but not doing much better. Funny thing, thyroid, adrenals, menopause...they all have the same symptoms. So now I'm thinking maybe I need HRT as well. How in the hell am I suposed to know what symptoms are coming from what hormones. GH is also REALLY low and doesn't respond to stress. Still have breast milk 5 years after stopped breast feeding. Prolactin levels are OK. MRI is OK. I'm a mess. The funny thing, my periods were completely normal until 24 hours after I started taking thyroid meds. It feels like thyroid meds have brought about my meno or at least made it worse but I've never heard of this...have any of you? if I stop my thyroid meds my cycle comes back more regular.

And sex drive, haven't had one since my daughter was born...she's six years old. Boy would I love to be horny. lol

The thought of HRT is not a pleasant one for me. Scares me. Do most women use HRT or NHRT? It's just that in the past 2 years my life has been so turned upside down. One minute on the fast track of a high paying job...next miunte I forcedmyself to quit because I think I'm losing my mind. Been rushed to the hospital from being so sick...reason unknown but probably my adrenals. One doc said it was probably epilpsy. Docs are real jerks. It's also possible that my meno is not that bad at all. Maybe the problems are coming from other hormones. I suppose a few months on NHRT will let me know for sure.

I keep getting mad because the docs keep saying it's meno when I think they should be looking at my pituitary. I've lost soo much respect for docs I'm not really sure who to believe. They might actually be right but I just don't trust them. My gyno insists that HRT is safe... She's a big premarin fan with progestin. (Don't think she know difference between progestin and progesterone).

I could vent for hours but my net connection is dial up... Robin

This tingling sensation under your skin, can somebody explain it more to me. What I feel is like my blood is boiling under my skin. Also this sensation in my mouth, its like a just had a cool mint, but not a good feeling. I am about ready to loose my mind. I just feel sick all over, tired, irritatble, like I'm dying. My period is almost 3 months late (age is 49). Thanks for all the support on this site!!!

Hello everyone.

I'm 38 and started these symptoms around 2 years ago, there is a family history of earlier menopause, my mother was done and dusted (excuse the term!) at 42 and my sister at 40.

Chronic insomnia (the worst)
If lying in bed numbness in left arm, I'm not even lying on it much.
Zaps like electric shocks up and down my body.
28 day cycle all over the place, one month it's 24 days another month it's 32 days etc.
Hot flushes which are horrendous but they don't happen all the time.
Zero libidio
Very bad pre period anxiety
Sore breasts
Itchy legs
This burnt feeling on the tip of my tongue right now (new one!!)
Decreased memory (this one is really bad)
Muscle aches and pains

Thing is though I could be in peri, I probably am due to the family thing but I might have Lymes as well (got bitten, had rashes and flu symptoms afterwards then chest pains, joint pains, especially neck pain and also a hump!!) but then again I might not so it's difficult trying to work out what is what.

Anyone else starting to get a hump??? It's not so big but you can see it and feel it.

The tingling sensation - for me, it was like an internal jittering running through my body. I called them the internal shakes b/c I felt like my I was vibrating internally. As with your blood boiling under your skin - I had burning arms - it hurt really bad - like my skin, bones, muscles, everything was on fire. Both of these symptoms made me cry and cringe! This all started for me at age 50. I too felt like I was sick all over, tired all the time and like I was dying!! Your hormones are probably out of wack big-time right now.

Hi everyone! I am 36 and I have question for everyone. Have any of you been diagnosed with fibromyalgia?? I was last year and I am now finding that I have a lot of the same symptoms as some of you here. Tingling in arms, legs, painful almost burning sensations in arms and legs. Mine feel like its in the bone or my veins. VERY painful. I now wondering if maybe i am not suffering from peri instead of fibro. Anyone have any insight on this?

Well I could have written your post myself!!! I too have the exact symptoms , right down to the veins feeling like they have a deep ache. I have searched this whole site on different boards on this. If you click on my name you can see my posts. An awful lot with symptoms just like you. Although, I am so happy to see someone else post this I am also very sorry you are going through this. I have been trying to figure out if its fibro, peri or what. Read my posts if you have time...like I said, I describe the same things. Take care....L

I hope this soon goes away. I am about ready to loose my mind (not that it was much better before). It's just like theres no future or something. The depression is starting to come now, can't sleep, feel sooooo tired, jitters, headaches, neck ache, you name it I have it and its not fun. I was reading something today in here about peri-zappers, I hope they respond. I don't know if I added it at the right place. Anyways does anyone know if that is a combination of vitamins or if there is a pill called that. Thanks again

I urge everyone who is having symptoms bad enough to effect the quality of your life to see your doctor for a check up. It is normal to have a few symptoms but what many have described here is not normal. I thought I was going through menopause last year, it was something entirely different that could be treated, it was my thyroid. Go see your doc people!

Hi Poslunsy55,

My internal jittering did go away eventually. This all happened to me at age 50. I was fortunate enough where my peri symptoms lasted 5 mos for me it was the worse time in my life. I went to 35 drs. and specialists within a 5-mo period and everything came back normal. The internal jitters are definitely not a very common symptom that the med world knows about it seems. It seems like drs. can only relate to hot flashes! I was put on Paxil CR and once I started feeling a itsy bit better, I was able to focus on books like "Before the Change" - from there I started taking the peri-zappers and trying to work out a little bit. Slowly, each day, I felt better. I have been fine since. One of the peri-zappers I strongly believe in is taking Magnesium. Our bodies must really deplete this mineral during peri time.

I'm sure you have already gone to see drs. I can't imagine any woman with these weird unbearable peri symptoms not going to see a dr. but I also bet that the majority of them have normal results. Anyway, I do, however, agree with katkat that you should get checked by drs. if you haven't.

I was stupid enough not to go to a doc. You know you hear all your life about the symptoms of the dreaded change, so I thought the symptoms were normal. I had skipped periods, that jittery feeling, I'd get so hot I felt I was going to lose my lunch, nausea, dizziness, weakness, so overly tired I cannot describe it. Then when I did start my period I bled for weeks, spotted in between, then bleed again. Thats what finally sent me to my gynecologist. I found that I was HYPERTHYROID. It went away on its own shortly after I found out the problem, so I had it six months or more and didn't realize it. Now I am 50, still having my monthlys that last only 3 days usually and they come each month about every 25 days or so.
Does anyone know the average age of menopause?

molly123
04-12-2005, 05:48 PM
Hi katkat,
My doc checked my thyroid years ago - way before I ever experienced any peri symptoms. I never had PMS symptoms even. My periods were always normal and never even affected my mood. You'd have never known I was "on the rag" even LOL! I am mild hypothyroid but what's strange is that I never seem to have had any of the symptoms of hypo except having a difficulty time losing weight. I have amazing energy sometimes, tend to be hot more often than cold, my hair isn't brittle, etc. I have been on meds for probably close to 10 yrs. - my doc said I would notice extreme tiredness if I wasn't on it.

I didn't know hyperthyroid can go away by itself. I thought once you are diagnosed w/some kind of thyroid condition, you have to be on meds for the rest of your life. Hmmm...makes me wonder even more so now...

The average age for menopause is 52.

I thought the same thing about having a bad thyroid. I guess it can get inflamed or something unexplainable. When she said that we should wait 90 days and check again I went along with her, I felt so awful that I called my family doctor, but by the time my appointment got here he did another blood test and it was nearly normal again and I've felt ok since then. I was doing some reading and it said sometimes when the thyroid does that it will go the opposite and stay slow, just my luck is what I thought, then I'll gain fifty pounds.
As for menopausal symptoms, I think lots of women think they are having them and its really something else, a low sugar problem, thyroid, etc. My sis in law was swearing she was going through menopause for years and I remember saying its impossible you need to see a doctor, by the time she went in for a check up she had gallbladder trouble, and she had waited so long she now has permanent damage to her stomach. Thats why I push for women to talk to their doctors....I love my female gynecologist and wouldn't trade her for all the men docs in the world.
I dread going through menopause and refuse to become a woman that hates sex, lol if that means estrogen........ooops, they say I can't take it because my tendency to develope blood clots.
sigh

You can have thyoid problems and doctors may not catch it. A routine blood analysis might indicate no problem, so to be sure you get a saliva test. Do a search on the web and find out lots of stuff about adrenals, thryroid and hormones that traditional doctors either don't know or don't address. Like I said, do a search on saliva test and learn so much about it.

It seems I've had thyroid tests a million times and they are always normal. Should I have him check it again? I do take magnesium and that about all. I started them a while back because of skipped heart beats. When I went to my gyno a few weeks ago, she wasn't understanding at all. All she said is that I'm going through menopause and basically that was it. She wasn't understanding at all. She seemed mad that I made my appointment earlier. I go to my family doctor on thursday. Hope he's better (I never had him before). I need something calming also.

Thanks again

Yeah, can relate to above symptoms. has anyone gotten over the menopause and these symptoms stopped or decreased. reason is l hope my theory is correct.. seems that menopause also causes health problems such as type 2 diabetes fluid retentention slower metabolism etc. question: if you take care of these new issues so they are in control will there be a chance that the body will go back to regular health once the whole hormone menopause thing ends? can anyone help?/?

katkat

I dont' think menopause causes things like type 2 diabetes, but aging and not the best diet. Its probably that aging causes the menopause also therefore they occur at the same time? My cousin said her symptoms of menopause lasted about 5 or6 months. But I've heard others say it last much longer. Has anyone tried Estravera or what ever its called? if so did it help?

Age 43, fair skinned female, 135 lbs 5'8, slim/athletic build going away fast, mother of 16 & 13 yr old/married 19 years happily always...

The following perimenopausal symptoms began at age 38 & continue to this day:

Can't sleep through the night anymore (wake up every night @ 2am greatly overheated & must remove every stitch of clothing)
Every little noise/movement while sleeping startles me & wakes me up (I use to be a dead sleeper who had wonderful sleep all my life)

Internal twitching/vibrating
Nervousness (always before, so calm & carefree...no worries)
Panic attacks (have no reason to panic though & have always been in "control" & never felt "fear")
Terrible headaches around periods
Pain in muscles of neck/head/shoulders/digestive system
Breast pain
Heart palpitations
Not much sexual desire
Heavy menstrual bleeding (still normal cycles)
Bad cramping during menstruation
Very weak & pale with leg pain/muscle pain during menstruation
Dry eyes
Lots of gas (painful in stomach/upper & lower intestines)...going to the bathroom feels great!
Bloating & no more waistline
No more abdominal muscles despite working out
Very loose stools first 3 years, now back to normal since I'm on bc pills for the heavy menstrual bleeding
Always hungry (never in my life have I been like this)
(I feel if I don't eat frequently, I get faint...I seem to feel faint often, despite being checked for diabetes, etc. that may cause this symptom)...
Bigtime nausea if I eat & lay down to sleep & wake up soon after
Loss of muscle tone all over, despite always being slim & athletic
Exhausted
Hard to concentrate
Eyesight worsening
Skin drying up
Slow wound healing
Facial hair
(Use to be a cold-natured person, now I'm always warm & at night I'm burning up)
My face is losing its muscle tone also.
Ringing in ears sometimes
"Deep Vein" pain, but no signs of vein problems
Slight nervousness/weakness in hands

I went to the fam. doctor about 2 years ago because of the increasing severity/frequency of the symptoms, thinking I might be dying of some horrible disease.
MRI was performed among blood tests, etc & nothing was found.
I went to my gyno who thought low dose bc pills may help...went on Seasonale where you only have 4 periods a year...that is GREAT.
I do believe many of the symptoms have become "slightly" better, but they have not dissappeared...oh the power of the human body to do its will!
I do not have the horrible periods anymore or the major pms symptoms, but the rest is still hanging around.
Sometimes I still think I have a horrible disease or not very long to live.

In my opinion your last sentence says it all. I don't think all our symptoms are necessarily related to menopause, some of them,,,,,,,,many of them are simply that we are getting older. My husband for example is complaining of many symptoms too. Our greatest line is "it sucks getting old", lol, we were never warned that someday we'd grow older was we?
The lack of sleep sucks but there are some over the counter remedies that help and are not addictive. The first one is Benadryl. Its an antihistiimine (sp?) and it will stay in your system for about 12 hours so take it early in the evening. One or two is ok; its what they put in tylenol PM to help you sleep. The other is something you find around the vitamins called melatonin. It wears off in 3 to 4 hours but usually if you fall asleep that is half the battle or you can get the time released. I don't like to use anything on a regular basis no matter how safe they say it is so I will use something a few nights and then try it on my own. Sometimes its just a matter of breaking the habit of insominia.
As I said my husband has lots of the symptoms you say you have, so do I.....I just feel so betrayed by my eyes. lol When I was young I had my nose broke so its a little crooked, nothing anyone would notice but wearing glasses is painful and eye surgery is out of the question since I have a lazy eye (long story) so it really sucks having to put on glasses all the time to read.
I guess I need to just toughen up a bit, maybe we all do. Try to relax when you are with your husband, I bet for most still in their fourties that is half the battle, that and mindset when it comes to sex. lol I love my husband and I have no intentions of giving in to a sexless marriage or crummy sex life.

Good luck Bubbly, let me know if you try the Benadryl for sleeping, it really works good and is non addictive. You can by the Walmart brand and its a lot cheaper, I think its called equate.

Hi Bubbly~
I thought I wrote that list!!! The one thing you mentioned that really caught my eye was the feeling in the veins. I too have experienced this on and off for about 7 months. It is so hard to explain to people and yet feels so much like vein pain. I really notice it in my arms. So strange. I have said it before.....I can't see how these things have anything to do with our hormones...but apparantly they do! Take care.Lesley

Happy Mothers Day, we're off to go to my daughters, and parents. Hugs Sandie

Periods farther apart, sometimes heavier when they finally come
muscle twitching and/or pulsing/buzzing/vibration feeling
some feeling of pulling muscle or muscle pain in small spots for a short time
feeling of a lump in my throat
anxiety (big time!)
weak/shaky feeling some days, particularly earlier in the day
constipation, gas causing abdominal pain at times
have awoken a couple of times with a burning feeling in my stomach
soarness in both thumbs with onset of peri
some joint pain in my fingers with periods
tingling in fingers
sometimes a tingly spot on my face, feels like a hair on the face
mild hot flashes
And lastly, all this makes my quite moody and irritable!

OK - here they are.

Periods were PERFECT (28,29,30 days) for the last 12 months then the last one was 18 days.
1. Itching in vaginal opening.
2. leg cramps
3. foot pain
4. knee pain - occasionally have trouble extending my leg in the morning when I wake up.
5. osteoarthritis in the hands and feet
6. constipation that preciptated an anal fissure with rectal bleeding - doc confirmed no cancer 2 weeks ago
7. bad acne
8. crying spells
9. stuffy nose
10. funny sensation in left eyelid - optahmologist found nothing - just needed stronger reading glasses
11. sore breasts on and off
12. muscle tension
13. palpitations
worst of all - ANXIETY that has raised my blood pressure which up until my last SHORT period was 115/75 - now about 150/90

I meaure b/p at home and get a panicky feeling in my stomach everytime I put the cuff on. Needless to say the numbers are BAD. I am so frightened because I also have high cholesterol but the doc has never put me on medicine because my HDL has always been high. Now I feel like a walking time bomb. I don't know what to do with diet anymore because as it is I eat almost no fat and have always watched my sodium intake all my life.

I go back to the doc on Friday. She prescribed 20 mg. of Elavil before bedtime to tie me over till I get my body straight. Also have set up an appointment with a psychologist.

Well there you have it. Thanks for listening everybody. With all the symptoms I have gotten from perimeno I wish I could add one more symptom to the list; courage. This process is not for sissy's.

I'm 46, and I think my peri symptoms started as long as 7 years ago, but probably have gotten worse in the last 3-4 years:

Extreme menstral cramps the day before and day of
Period every 21 days
Insomnia right before period
Sensitivity to caffeine and sugar and carbs (I've adjust my diet which helps)
Worse PMS and starts earlier (like a week ahead of period)
Migraines - I've had since 12 but lessened as I got older - I find that I tend to get them more around my period and more sensitive to being triggered by foot (like red wine - my fav!) My migraines are not as severe as when I was younger, almost more a nuisance now.

I'm just recovering from a bout of anxiety that was constant for a month after a death (a suicide) in my family that literally turned my life upside down. I thought something was seriously wrong with me. Those symptoms were an elevated HR, bouts of adrenaline rushes and feelings of panic with heart palps (they would go on all night). After having some tests for my heart and other blood/urine tests, both my cario and GP have told me to give it some time and see if things clear up. I'm taking something to get me thru the next 2 weeks and I am improving, but I want to figure out a more natural way to deal with the anxiety problem. I'm thinking that maybe my wacked out hormones made me react is such a way to the anxiety.

Re: anxiety...

Background: 43 yrs old, perimenopausal symptoms began at 38, got bad at age 41.

To help me get over a period where I thought I was losing my mind...heart palp's, nervousness, panic attacks (btw, I never had any anxiety in my life until these perimenopausal symptoms), I went to my gen. dr. who prescribed Pamelor (Nortriptylene).

Dr. said that it was something physicians quit prescribing because of all the new commercialized drugs around in modern times, but he said that he believed this was the safest drug in his opinion. It has been around a long time and medicine has shown it to be very safe with no known bad effects during or after taking it on the system/organs. (I checked the web & have found no bad reports at all.)

I was prescribed 10 mg. once before bed, but he said it is safe that the drug is even safe to take as much as 100 mg. per day. The one pill (10 mg) did it for me. I stayed on it 2 mos. & seem to be okay afterwards. Also, my neck pain went away!

(This med does something to the seratonin levels in the brain)...I must have needed the extra boost that the chocolate wasn't giving me :)

Check with your doctor for help & good to you!...Bev

I bought something called a "CHILLOW"...it is a pillow that you fill with 10 c. water & it is suppose to stay cool all thru the night...

I've always been a skinny boney rail, who was always cold...now I'm hot, espec. at night...I used my "chillow" for the first time last night & had the best nights sleep I've had for 2 yrs! I recommend it...I got mine at Walgreens ($14.99) on sale. I think they're about 20.-25.00

Sandy,

Your symptoms are very similar to mine, especially the anxiety, ibs type things (gas especially), lower back ahes, and ovary aching , although mine is on the right. I always had bad pms and now it is longer in peri. (I am 51)

With the ovary aching, do you notice it lasts a little longer in peri? I also think it aggravates the back aches too.

anyway, it is always good to read posts and see that we are all going thru the same thing!! Hope the hormone specialist helps you; you should post on your experience there.

Sandylk:
How did you find a "hormone specialist"? Through your Gyno? At my last GP visit, she didn't seem to think having my hormones would do me any good. Which is fine - I can pursue through someone else. Even though my Gyno originally prescribed a progesterone through a compounding pharmacy, we did absolutely no tests to determine my hormone levels. And now I'm reading that progesterone alone is not a good idea. I was given Klonepan (sp?) for 2 weeks to help me get off this anxiety spiral, but long term, I do not want to take medication, but look for more natural answers, like making sure my hormones are checked out and am doing research on bioidentical hormones. I will also consider theapy to deal with issues causing my anxiety.

Hi Katidid!

Well...I read Suzanne Somers book about all the hormone issues and then I tracked down one of the doctors that she recommends in the back. He had a 6 month waiting list...lol...and I couldn't wait...so he gave me a few other names closer (there is also a menopause society on the internet) to my area who specialize in bioidentical hormone treatments. One of the docs I called was an endocrinologist who told me that there was a female gyno in my area that wrote a book and specializes in bioidentical hormones...I was in her office the following week. I have had 3 blood tests to date..and an ultrasound to check my lining. While she does not think I am in menopause...my hormones are definitely flucuating a lot (so...peri)! She put me on a very low dose estradiol patch (.0375) and this seems to be working great for me....except I keep having my period every 2-3 weeks...but that is better than the tension and other symptoms I was feeling. Sooooooo...then she put me on prometrium (a bioidentical progesterone 100 mg) and I was fine for the first 5-6 days on it and then my mood and physical symptoms took a nose-dive...so she took me off that right away. It is a delicate balance, I think, and we are still trying to find the right mix that works for me...ugh!

I hope this helps in some way.

Hi rmc!

Yessssssssss...I always had bad PMS too...and it has gradually gotten longer and longer and worse and worse as the years go by...ugh! I get little sharp pains in my left ovary...and when I feel these, I am generally ovulating or am about to start my period (it does not happen every month)...it is very strange to know a body so well...lol!!! The estradiol patch has helped me with most of these symptoms so far...it has only been about 3 months though...so we shall see.

Good luck to you too!

To Sandy:
Thanks so much for your information. I'm in the middle of the Suzanne book, that's why when you mentioned bioidentical hormones (and not just progesterone), it caught my eye. I'm definitely in peri (not menopause) - still having periods, yes, just about every 21 days! About a year ago, I had read "What your doctor never told you about premenopause", which I think is listed in the back of SS 's book, but other than trying progesterone, never really pursued finding someone to help with balancing ALL hormones. I've actually quit the progesterone cream for now until I pursue a more holistic approach. I've also been reading the "Heart" board since heart palps got so bad for a while and found it interesting that many have talked about getting hormones checked and magnesium levels, etc. While my GP did some blood work, I'm not sure what all was included other cholesterol and thyroid check. I guess what I'm saying is that we really do have to be our own health advocates and I appreciate those here sharing their experiences!

Perimenopausal symptoms: forgetful, irregular periods, vaginal dryness, mood swings, night sweats, hot flashes, weight gain, etc..

I'm 51 and was without a period for 9 months and then suddenly I had a very heavy period and 10 days later a lighter period. I'm having a d&c today, because of the irregular bleeding. When the doctor examined me, he said I was still bleeding inside.

I take meds for depression & anxiety so my moods are under control and I don't get anxious.

Yea, ain't life grand! I have had all of the symptoms you listed at one time or another (the most recent being TMJ) for the past 6 years with the exception of the vaginal dryness...haven't had that one.....YET! I was 39 when it all started with me, and I will be 46 in September and the symptoms are still going strong!! I wonder why women have to suffer with menopause and not MEN(opause!)! It's a tough journey for sure.

Boy I am glad I found you guys today. I will be 49 in August and some days I just feel terrible. I can relate to almost all of the symptoms, but the one that has bothered me lately and I thought it was me lose my happy mind was the feeling of Doom, Sometimes I can be at work and all of sudden everything feels horrible. Then the panic and anxiety. I do take Ativan when needed. Which has been needed more recently, but my doctor is okay with that.
I have have a appt. in june with a new doctor. Any suggestion on what I should ask for in terms of tests or supplements.
I still have periods any where from 21 days to 28 days apart.

Thank you

Hi Ladies,
It looks like this is one of the most active threads on the meno board! I have had all and I mean ALL of the symptoms that you meno sisters have listed and then some for the last eleven years. The symptoms of anxiety and panic have been extreme and have made me feel like hell is really here on earth. Of all the symptoms listed here though, there is one that I have that no one else seems to have mentioned. I have a frequent frightening feeling of not being able to get enough air in when I breathe-almost a feeling of suffocation. I used to get it every few weeks or so, but now it seems to happen on a daily basis. I have read that it can be a symptom of perimenopause and I wondered if anyone else has experienced this distressing sensation or if I have something awful (and life-threatening) going on with my respiratory system -one more thing to add to my health neurosis. I know this can be a symptom of anxiety, but I used to only have the breathing problem when I was having a full blown panic attack. Any comiseraters would bring me comfort!

Hi Darlene.

That can be a sympton of anxiety. like you said. I would go to the doctor just to make sure. I know we meno sisters ( i like that ) can have every disease under the sun. But that is our doctors problem. Let us know what happens.

I get that feeling ususally several days out of the month. I feel like I have to keep taking deep breaths. It's probably anxiety and the more you think about it the worse it gets. Go to the Panic board and read some of those posts.

Ok i have been reading most of the symptoms and my biggest complaint is the leg pain. I just want to cut off my legs from the knees down the pain in the calves is so bad. I work in a hospital and i am on my feet just about all the time. I have had to cut back my hours to keep enough for medical benefits. I take Lortab-10's Soma it barely takes the edge plus a whole lot of other meds to boot. I am glad to see that i am not the only one with leg pain. Jean

I hope someone is still reading this message board! I have experienced many of the listed symptoms at one time or another, but the most aggrevating problem that I have is dry eyes. I never would have imagined that some thing that sounds SO simple could make life so miserable! Any suggestions? I think I need some type of hormone, as my eyes are the driest a week or 10 days before I get my monthly friend. Any ideas would be MOST welcome! I have tried about every doctor and every drop on the market.
Thanks a million!

Nanna,

You might want to post your question in a separate thread. There was one recently called "Dry Eyes - Symptom of Peri?" You can do a search on this board. I've cut and paste one of the responses in that thread from Molly123 who seems to be very knowledgeable about dry eyes (and lots of other stuff too!). So you might want to search this board for that thread, and post another one if you still need more help.

Take care,
Nornie

Here is Molly's Response:
I've become an expert with dry eyes. You should most definitely take care of the dry eyes situation b/c it can seriously affect your vision. I had it as a result of hormonal imbalance. It was the very first symptom I had - came on suddenly too. Had an eye exam and then within 2 weeks, I suddenly had dry eyes. At first, I thought it was b/c of my new contacts or allergies.

My first recommendation to you is to get the eye drops from the drug store that come in little vials. Whatever you do, buy ONLY the ones that says preservative-free - this is very important. DON'T buy Visine or any of the ones in bottles. They will make your eyes worse in the long run - why they are on the market even, I don't know why. I buy the drops called "Tears Naturale" b/c you can put the lid back on it to use it later (no more than 12 hrs. later). Any other brand, you have to throw away once you open it. Depending on how bad your eyes are, it is not harmful if you use it every hour even. I had to use drops every hour for a month or so -it became very expensive! Second, don't wear contacts if you do - gotta wear the glasses!

At night, use this night gel - it is kind of glooey but you get used to it. I use Refresh PM. Also, go see an Ophthalmologist. I have been under an Ophthalmologist care since Sept. 2003 and I just stopped seeing him March 2005. If you're interested in everything they did to me, I'll post back - it can be a bit scary if you're not used to anyone touching/poking your eyes. It didn't bother me much b/c I wore contacts before. If you haven't seen had your eyes checked in 2 years, you should. Ophthalmologist doctors use more accurate machines to test for gluocoma.

I was eventually put on Restasis which is a prescription eye drop. It doesn't work for everyone but for me it did. I volunteered to be in their test/research program so they can monitor how well I do and compare it with other patients. I ended up being their poster child for this product. My eyes are back to normal now but out of habit, I still use drops occasionally.

Perimenopause can cause hypothyroidism because the estrogen dominance will inhibit the thyroid. It might help to use progesterone cream. Here are my symptoms, which are just like everyone else's and not only do I not sound attractive, I ain't lookin' so great either these days!

anxiety
sporatic depression
dry skin
dark spots on arms
churning sensation inside me which drives me bonkers!
ZERO sex drive
weight gain (ARGH!!)
extremely foggy and forgetful brain
lack of energy or stamina
cranky at times
angry at times
DANGEROUS at times
hypothyroidism
food intolerance
reflux
gas
impatient
I get frustrated very easily these days
frequent nausea
breast pain and swelling
I cry alot, during the news, commercials, tv programs....anything can set me off.

There's more I'm sure, but I can't think of anything right now. All I know for sure is that I'm not the same person now that I was 10 years ago. I'm 53 going on 75.

I think that besides all the other symptoms i have been having, the most difficult one lately has been the headaches. I usually have one migraine with aura at some point during my period, but recently I am getting them (sometimes without aura) all throughout the month, some last for several days. They seem to coincide or possibly be triggered by tmj, the left side of my face aches and my left eye throbs with even the slightest movement. I can't tolerate bright light or noise, can't read, can't watch television, can't even have a normal conversation because the pain is so intense. I usually get relief with Excedrin Migraine or Advil, though it can take a couple of hours until I feel like myself. The worst is when I wake up with a migraine, it makes the whole day start slower as I try to be still while it goes away. If it's a work day though I just have to push through the pain. Other than that, the night sweats are getting pretty annoying too, and I continue to have all kinds of digestive symptoms. Fun!

yock,
I can relate to having insomnia. Mine lasted for a good 10 years. Hardly slept much and when I did, it was usually on average 2-4 hours. Amazingly, I was able to function pretty good - think my body just got used to it. It has only been recent that I am able to sleep better. Try taking 500 mg of Magnesium at bedtime. It isn't going to knock you out but I think it does something to you in the long run and it might help. If you want something that make you drowsy and help you fall asleep, you can also try Melantonin or something like Tylendol PM and see if it helps also.

Presently my symptoms are weight gain, feeling off, lightheaded, major hot flashes, night sweats, mild sadness, cramping, and daily spotting for almost 2 months (finally stopped two days ago).

Things are getting better. On my week off bcp I felt good, in prior months I would have been bombarded with symptoms. This time I was functional. Things are getting better even though the hot flashes and night sweats have returned. My hormones must have taken another dip because these symptoms had subsided for quite awhile.
