Hello, I am new here, and I have been reading the board for a while. I am a 28 y/o male and in pretty good shape, but my heart has been acting nutty. I am going to the doctor next monday, but I was wondering if anyone has experienced anything like this or has any input.
My resting heart rate is higher than it should be, and at times it jumps to ridiculous rates for no reason I can figure out. I can't call it fluttering, because when it kicks in, it feels like it is pounding so hard that it is going to knock the fillings out of my teeth. Especially when I lay down, that is when it gets really bad, and it is constant. I don't really feel pain or numbness, but at times I will have a slight pain in my chest or around there, but I don't know if it's related to that or if I am just being paranoid.
It has been like this for about 10 years, but it has been consistent everytime I go to bed lately, and I feel it beating even when I am just sitting around. So how worried do you think I could be? Does this sound familiar to anyone? Thanks.

How fast is your heart rate? I had these symptoms and more until I was diagnosed with Mitral Valve prolapse(it billowed all the way back) and mitral regurgitation with some aortic regurgitation. My resting pulse was 120, and now on beta blockers it is 60.
Good luck, and try not to worry. I am 50 now and still here. :D

From experience, when your heart is acting up, see a cardiologist and get checked. Most GP's will do an EKG and send you on your way, ekg's can be meaningless in some situations. This does not mean there is anything wrong with your heart, but don't assume there isn't until you have been checked.
Take care,
Abby

This could be very dangerous, if it is really often, waste no time going to a DR and if it gets to where it is constant, go to ER, I recently had bypass surgery and afterwords my heart rate was 150, the DR was very worried and after he got it under control, I had to stay an extra 2 days in the hospital.

havegood,
You'll have to see a cardiologist but I'd put my money on atrial fibrillation/atrial flutter.
Drugs can help a lot.
Til you can see someone, I'd say take 250-500 mg of any magnesium compound (health food store) every day- it sometimes works instant wonders with rhythm irregularities.
Take also an aspirin a day for safety.

When I was 16 my heart started to act up and would go from a resting heart rate of about 75bpm's to easily double that. It wouldn't last long and then it would go back down to my resting rate within one beat. I allowed this to go on until I was 22 and when I fanally went to the ER my heart had been beating at 210bpm's for about 2 hours. I was hooked up to an ekg the entire time I was there and within the last minute I was on it the problem appeared. It was called wolfe parkinsons white disease or WPW. I was referred to a specialist and was told I could have surgery or take medication. I elected the surgery. It was a minor operation and was done through cathaders I was up and running the next day. Back to work the day after that!
