On w/c since 2002, had microdisktomy, have drop foot and nerve damage, wear afo on leg as a result of surgery. In dec. of 2003, my ankle gave out and broke both sides of my ankle, now pins and plates on both sides, also still wearing afo. I also have severe anxiety, fibromyalgia, gerd, depression, ibs,and too many things to list. My question is I still am on w/c but I know I will not be able to go back to work, should I file for soc/secruity ? Thanks for any help.

Hi Cookie!

Of course, the sooner the better! w/c doesn't last forever. You will need to get your Drs. on board with you, the more the merrier! This isn't an easy process and it doesn't happen over-nite either. So the sooner you get the ball rolling the better you'll be. By the sounds of it your bases (axis or diagnoses) are covered (check SSDI's website). My spinal column is in the degenerative state in several locations. My wife has been on pins & needles and very protective of what I do. Still I wait patiently for SSDI to rescue us. Just found out a couple of months ago that my condition(s) are hereditary. I only recently was reunited with my birth-mother. I'm 45 now. I'd rather be working!

Sincerely,
Ed

By the way, my favorite is chocolate chip! lol! :)

I was the Officer's cook in the U.S. Navy and I used to make Tollhouse cookies in the middle of the Persian Gulf (Iranian conflict). "Home"?-made!!!

Hi Ed,
Thank you for your reply, yes I think all my drs.. will agree with saying I am eligible for disability. I was not sure if I should do it now well I am still getting w/c or wait until they say my time has run out. I dont know that much about w/c been on it for 2 years now but I know no insurance will cover all these pre existing problems I still have, even though I still pay monthly for my b/c b/s insur. but have been using w/c for my problems. I hurt my back at work, they have been good about paying so far but I worry about what will happen a year from now, all my drs. tell me my nerve damage and drop foot is permenent, so I guess my best bet is to apply now because it takes time.
Thanks for the help cookie

The sooner you start the disability process the better. I've seen it take many years to get an answer from SS.

Hi Dalesgirl,

Years?????Does it really take that long to recieve s/s? I know it takes awhile, but years, thats terrible, we work for years and pay all these taxes and when we need the help it takes so long. I wish it took years to take my tax money, but we all know how that happens. Thanks on the info, I think I better apply tomorrow, the sooner the better.
Thanks again cookie

It can! Your first denial (which most get) takes a few months... then it's on to the second phase (except for a few states that skip this phase but in the end arent' saving time) and then if there is a denial there you go in front of a judge. The time between the second phase and the judge is AT LEAST a year. I spoke with someone on this forum today that looks like they are finally approved after 4 years. A friend of mine just got approved and she filed in Feb. of 1999. My neighbor was hurt at work and applied and it took 3 years. My aunt applied 3 years ago and is still fighting. Of course with these people there are a variety of ailments but that's just a low down.

My husband broke his neck in 5 places and is considered an 'incomplete' quad meaning he's lost strength in all 4 limbs and can't stand erect, is in constant pain (a number of things) and to look at him and to look at his medical records it seems hands down. It took him a year. And that was VERY quick by SS standards. It's a terribly long and frustrating process, the sooner you start it the sooner you know if you get it. And don't stop with one denial, appeal, don't stop there, appeal again. Heck appeal the judge if you're denied. I truly believe their goal is to get people in such a financial strain that they will work even if they shouldn't just because they can't survive, it's sad but true.

Hi Dalesgirl,
Just read your post, and I did not realize it takes so long, but I am still wondering if I should apply while I am still on w/c.? I recieve money monthly, and am still seeing drs. but am worried about what happens if they decide they can give me a office job, I have so many things wrong with me right now and for the last 2 years, now they are going to give me a afo brace for my leg which goes past my knee, it seems like this nightmare will never end, they want to give me a spinal cord implant but I refused, because in dec. of 2003, my ankle with the drop foot bent and broke on both sides, now I have pins and plates in my ankle and I had a blood clot from the fracture because it was so bad. I am so afraid to have any surgery for fear of another clot its like I will live in pain before I let anyone do surgery again. Sorry this is like I am rambling but once I get started I guess I go on and on(sorry).
Thank you for any imput cookie

No need to apologize.
I would still talk to your doctors and still apply if they feel it is warrented. By the time you get it your w/c may have run out and if not they adjust things as it should be. My neighbor was waiting three years for a settlement from w/c and SS so I know you can do both.

Hi Dalesgirl,
Thanks for your reply, I think I will file, I am sure this is going on 2 years that w/c will be running out soon and if it takes so much time for s/s I better file now. I wonder if they might say wait till I am off w/c before filing. Better to start now and if they say I have to wait, I will have a better idea how to go about it.
Thanks Cookie
