I've been eating Yoplait Light Fat Free Yogurt. The advertisement on the cup says something like "Burn More Fat and Loose More Weight as part of a reduced calorie diet". I've even gone on their website (as the cup says) to read the study that "backs up" this claim. (The study claims that people who ate 2-3 servings of this yogurt each day over an 8-week period lost more weight than people that didn't.) My question is: is yogurt a sensible food choice? I eat one or two 6 oz. cups per day. Each cup has 5 grams of protein, 19 grams of carbs (14g sugar), 20% calcium and vitamin D, 100 calories, no fat, and nearly no cholesterol. Is this too much sugar? I'm not on Atkins or any "fad" diets - just on a reduced calorie diet, trying to get my "ratios" closer to where they should be, and cut out some sugar. Thanks!

 I also eat yoplait light yogurt as advised by my dietician. I just tried their new brand called ultra. It has only 5 carbs and very little sugar(5g i think) and it didn't taste bad. When I see my dietician next month i will ask her about the new yoplait, ultra.

My nutritionist advised me to eat a yogurt every day because it's such a great source of extra calcium. I wouldn't worry about the sugars and carbs because yogurt isn't junk food - it's a very healthy choice for a snack and Yoplait is probably one of the better brands. They have good sugars and carbs, not bad ones, and can lessen chances for osteoporosis and give you more energy throughout the day. You could look into the Ultra like jtu said if you're worried about carbs.

Yogurt is good. Try to eat plain yogurt though. With more protein than carbs. Like I have yogurt with 0 grams fat, 7 grams protein and 5 grams carbs or so per I don't know how much 100 grams I think.

Yogurt is a great choice - its typically got a decent balance of protein and carbs, and is low fat or fat free. Its VERY important to read labels when choosing a yogurt... Some of them are VERY bad - really high in sugar and loaded with fat and calories (some are as bad as ice cream!)
Lite yogurts are less sugar, usually they contain a combination of corn syrup and a sugar substitute to cut the sugars and total carbs down (usually in half). And the low fat or fat free yogurts are better for obvious reasons. If you can't handle sugar substitutes, get plain lowfat or fatfree yogurt and flavor it yourself with fresh fruit or other natural toppings.
Breyers has an excellent lite yogurt with some great flavors (key lime and lemon are really good), but it contains aspartame to cut down the sugar and carbs, so proceed with caution.

Yoplait is the best yogurt around. The ultra has 5 g of sugar and 5 g of carbs. Yoplait lite is what my dietician recommended and it taste great. I've tried the key lime and it is awful.

Sugar shmugar. 3400 calories equal a pound, it doesn't matter if you eat that many calories in carrots, sticks of butter or yogurt. too many calories equals weight gain. I lost a bunch of weight by putting my Yoplait light in the freezer for an hour or so, then it was icy and felt more light a treat and took longer to eat, but same nutrition as straight from the fridge in four bites.

Actually, that's not exactly true! Theoretically, if your body metabolized all food types exactly the same, it might be closer to true, but the fact is that your body does not process all foods and calories the same way.

14g of sugar doesn't sound so good. Fact is yoghut IS good for you - but only the right type. Stop eating Yoplait and instead opt for an organic plain LIVE yoghurt which has accodophilus and add a little honey or fruit for sweetness and sprinkle on some crunchy wheatgerm and you have a really tasty treat.
Also, those sweetend/flavored yoghurts are full of preservatives.

I am a yogurt fanatic also, i eat at least twice a day... My fave's are Lite 85 by Blue Bunny.. Sweetened with Splenda, 80 calories, no fat, about 7-8 grams of sugar, 7 grams of protein. they have all kinds of flavors, and now they have a Carb Freedom with 5grams of carbs, and about 13grams of protein. Others that I enjoy are walmart's brand of lite yogurt, 80cal, no fat, and it's sweetened with nutrasweet I think, but i had lower sugar and more protein.. There is also Atkins Yogurt out, it's about 90 cals with 1.5g of fat.. They are all very good IMO, good protein source, calcium, etc.
But pick or choose, it's your choice! :)

Remember,
The SUGAR listed for plain yoghurts and other fermented milk products like kefir is not added sugar but the LACTOSE in the original milk. Much of this is converted to lactic acid which has fewer calories if any. Some is also convrted to the fiber that makes up the cell walls of the fermenting bacteria. What's left is lactose which has a much lower GI index than other sugars.
No manufacturer reports these better numbers but yoghurt is indeed better than the Nutrition Label indicates...calories also are ALWAYS considerably lower than listed.

But the distinction here is PLAIN yogurts... So many of the sweetened and fruited yogurts are loaded with refined sweeteners and are just as bad as eating ice cream. Just because its called "yogurt" doesn't necessarily mean its good for you! The key is reading inngredients so you know what's in it!

I like Stonyfield's organic yogurt. It's not artificially sweetented (like most) and has a great variety of flavors. Alot of the yogurts are sweetened with aspartame, which isn't too good for you. Although the acidipholus is a great part of yogurt too, ya know the friendly bacteria? :D
