View Full Version : Hair Color - Fading - and Medication

Over the last year or two I have experienced significant fading of my hair color (mostly just on top) in the summer time. My hair is a medium brown I guess, but the top fades to a reddish brown (which I do not like at all). My wife suggested I get it colored, so I went to her salon for a dye job - but it failed. Two applications of some color with ash in it (to correct the red) and very little took. Within a week, things were back to the red way they were before.

My theory is that something is going on with my hair that has suddenly made it very succeptable to fading and resistant to color - and the only thing I can think of is a prescription I've been on full-time for about a year and a half. That prescription is called Doxycycline. It's an anti-biotic that is used to treat a variety of conditions. I know that it affects the skin and makes one more prone to sunburn, so I'm theorizing that it can affect the hair too. I've researched it some and have come up with nothing to support that theory though.

So my question is two-fold. First, has anyone else experienced any affects on their hair from the use of this medication or know of that potential side-effect.

Second, I'd love to hear of a way to fix this red once and for all.

Thanks

I don't know of this perticular med, but i know certain meds will mess with your hair. do you have well water? your best bet would be to dye it with an ash base. maybe you need to do it a few times.... good luck!

No well water usage here - I've been using the city water in this location for years, but this fading thing is new.

Twice now I've tried the ash based color - at a salon - and it covers very little - then after just a week or so, all the new color is gone. Something clearly is keeping my hair from holding on to my natural color (and the dye).

Thanks anyway!
