Hi All,
I was just wondering what kind of Hobbies you all may have. Some times our world seems to revolve around pain, but there has to be times when we are doing something other than sitting on Ice packs or Hot packs and counting pills :-)

What takes your mind off of you pain? Even if only for a few minutes?

I Breed Doxies and Shih Tzu's taking care of tiny puppies gives me a little sence of usefullness. And I love puppy breath (yuck) :-)

Oh breeding dogs, wow thats hard work. But puppies ohhhhhhhh i love puppies.
Well i love to read and i write poetry for my own sakes. Usually depending on what mood im in. I also keep a private journal and also a blog in which i try to write everyday or every other day.
Other than that, im usually sitting here at the computer or trying to do housework and the rest of my free time is taken in that i am my parents caretakers. From handling their finances to doctor appts to medicare appls. You name it i do it for them. I also do alot of research for a neice who lives with me. She is studying to be a pharmacist. My son also cohosts a christian tv show every sat so i help out with research from over here and also on their live streaming.
My main hobby is watching movies, hubby and i LOVE movies and cuddling on the sofa together. I dont have much time for anything else lol.
At one time my desire was to drive around to small towns and take black and white pictures of old abandoned bldgs and find the history behind it. Some were from 1898 and such. My health never permitted it tho. So that dream died. I also listed things on ebay as a hobby, but i just dont have any time for that anymore.

In my free time I play the bass and synth in 2 hardcore bands, I record my own and other peoples bands via a recording buisness I have on the side, and of course, I'm a HUGE computer/gaming nerd! I spend a lot of time with my wonderful girlfriend, we share a lot of the same intrests.. (she can kick my butt on some xbox games!) I'm 21, and with a lot of help from my girl, I lead a pretty normal (if a bit hermit like) life. :) I don't think I'd survive without her. She's always there to offer a smile, hug and laugh. (and snort.. when she really gets laughing).

Mostly, I'm into the local music scene, here in Baltimore. I've been in the bands that I'm in for about 3 years for one and 2 in the other. Music is my outlet and the best way I've found to keep me sane. The scene here is great, everyone knows everyone, so it's a pretty tight knit group. I spend a lot of time writing with and hanging out with my bandmates.

In reply to your post, smackliet, my dad does a little dog breeding as well, mostly boxers I think. He's more into rescue of them though. I think he's a member of some national rescue assocation.

I try to let my health affect as little as possible, although it still manages to control a lot in my life. I have my times that I put aside to take my meds, and take a breather to rest and lower pain. My problems are directly related to my lung, so a breather now and then is important! My girlfriend's great at reminding me to not get worked up about things, and that for the most part there isn't much I can do other than to go day by day. On my good days, with help from my meds and sanity thanks to my friends, girlfriend, and music, I'm able to forget that I have anything wrong. Those are days that make it worth living!

My hobby or my passion I should say is one of the hardest for me now but I still pursue it. I love gardening and raising flowers. Just recently bought a Greenhouse and started raising my own plants...After six back surgeries, some things are harder to do now but I know my limits and have learnt to quit while I'm ahead. I also love selling on Ebay, it a great pasttime and love going to Garage Sales and Estate Auctions looking for collectibles to sell.

I am a musician. I collect guitars. I have 25 guitars. I am a song writer and the music helps me cope with pain. I write songs about everything. One song is called " Knocked down kicked in the teeth bleeding on the sidewalk blues" a funny blues about a guy who didn't know when to shut up. :D I write love songs , I write songs about being out of control at on point in my life just all kinds of things. I love it. I also am a master angler  I don;t go fishing, I go catching :) LIve life to its fullest an be as positive as possible. I get down too though and I write my best songs then. I play professionally and love every minute on stage. Thanks for asking

My hobbies have always been raising my children(#1), raising roses and other flowers, some vegetable and herb gardening, hiking, camping, boating, quilting, cross-stitch and gourmet cooking. However, since my back problems began 3 years ago, I have had to limit my activities. Of course my children are still my number one priority. During the summer I try to take them to the lake at least a couple times a week. I still have my roses and flowers although they are suffering badly from neglect. They have black spot right now and need treating badly. I had 32 different varieties but I have lost 3 bushes just this year. I still cook a couple times a week when I am able. Not as lavish dishes as I used to but all the same it's better than frozen meals and such. I haven't been camping, hiking or boating in 3 years. We sold our camper 2 years ago. I don't think I will ever be able to return to those activities. As for the quilting and cross-stitching, I have found that the meds mess with my mind and attention span too much for me to do those things anymore. I honestly just want enough of my life back to be able to spend quality time with my kids. Being able to tend to my roses would just be a bonus. Of course, being on these boards is also a big part of my life right now and I don't know what I would do if I couldn't be here on these boards. It keeps me sane right now.

Take care.

God Bless,
Sherry

Great Question! We have three dogs; however we don't breed. We have a little Lhasa (that was a rescue), someone had severely abused her and dumped her roadside, we have a little terrier mix; and a Queensland heeler. All very sweet dogs. The little terrier is the bossy one. When I am able we take in foster dogs (usually abandoned dogs). We fell in love with the little Lhasa and had to adopt her ourselves. I am very involved with my children's schools. I also serve on our local school board. This has been a rough year though for my "volunteer" activities, with my back injury and subsequent surgery. However, I have found sometimes that it is my children and my extra activities that have actually "forced" me out of bed some days .. which all and all I think is a good thing. However, I think we all can agree how important it is to put our health first and ensure our bodies get the rest we need.

Oh for goodness sakes WOMEN! ! ! !
tending to a garden??????? OUCH, im humilated!! now i better go hide my face, LOL ive killed all my plants except for the ivy i have inside my house. Yesterday finally got to go out and eat at a restaurant (remember recovering from surgery and an infected incision thats still open) and i kept looking at all the beautiful green plants they had in huge pots along the side of the place. I felt envious and said out loud how beautiful and my goodness the time it takes to take care of them. My moms best friend looked at me funny (remember im on pain meds and goofy) said uhm hon, theyre fake silly. I touched them and THEY WERE. Just looked soooo darn real i thought , HEY wait a minute. I CAN DO THAT!!! That i can handle. I CAN HAVE A PLASTIC GREEN THUMB after all, sooooooo there. :D
thats what im going to do, and no dont worry im not going to buy the pink pelicans for the front yard . LOL

Thanks for the laugh Jen, I sure needed it! My husband is getting into gardening now that we finally got our own home. We lived in apartments for 19 years.

My hobbies are reading, watching movies and learning the computer. I will soon have another special hobby, as my first granddaughter is due to be born any day now!

Awww Kayley,
OHHH im sooo jealous. a grandbaby, i keep trying to hurry my son to get married so he can give us grandkids, but first gotta see how i do with the plastic ferns and ivys. Then i'll progress to a plastic baby, THEN MAYBE he'll find me worthy and trained enough to finally give me a grandchild before i die of old age.
Congrats on the grandbaby honey, they are soooo precious!!

Thank you Jen! I'll let you know when she is born. Don't feel bad, I don't have a green thumb either. I can't wait till the tomatoes and cantaloupes are ready, thanks to hubby!

Your plastic stories brought back a memory for me of my 16th birthday. I told my parents I wanted my birthday present in the driveway. Of course, I wanted a car! So that morning they told me to go look in the driveway. I was so excited! :bouncing: Soooo, I go out there, and what is in the driveway???? A PLASTIC lemon tree!!!! :  I must have killed even it because I have no idea what happened to it.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Kayley and Jenetti,

You guys are just too funny. I am going to make a confession here, but I will never again own up to it or admit it. :) I have told you that I raise roses and other flowers and vegetables. Well they are the best plants you have ever seen. Last year my tomato plants were over five feet tall and had to be staked with tobacco sticks. They yielded some of the prettiest tomatoes you have ever seen, and tons of them. And my cucumbers were unbelievable also. I raised English-seedless cukes. My church even used one of my cukes in their vacation bible school. They had a county fair theme, and one of my cukes was over 2 feet long. Anyway, after telling you all this and tooting my own horn, now comes my confession. I cannot raise houseplants. I kill every plant that is brought into my house. My mom says she has never seen anything like it. LOL. She bought me a cactus for mothers day and said, at least you cant kill this. Well, I killed it. I bought some aloe vera plants a couple of months ago and well they are still alive but they are struggling. I just don't know what I do wrong. I think they get the wrong sunlight or something. I just don't get it. I have seen plants in doctors offices that don't get any natural light and they look beautiful. So I think I am going to do like Jenetti and go with them plastic plants LOL. I already use silk swags and stuff from Home Interiors on my walls, so I guess I just need to get some plants too. LOL. I just thought I would share.

Oh, by the way, I don't even cut any of my roses to bring in the house because I don't want them to die like that. I will cut them for other people or to make a corsage for my mom for church or my daughter for a dance, but not to bring in this house. This house is not plant friendly. LOL.

God Bless,
Sherry

Awwww sherry LOL,
my goodness woman, what do you DO to those houseplants???? :) I have exactly ONE living plant in my house. IT belongs to my neice but since she lives with me ive adopted it cause she doesnt have time for it. Rest of flowers or plants are silk inside the house.
OUTSIDE plants, oh my goodness! sorry, no matter what is planted i swear its like signing the death certificate for them. Poor things. WOW but im sooo impressed with your talent to grow veggies and stuff. My FIL, who is now dead had a green thumb. Oh he loved his roses and veggies, it was a true gift.
Well going to go lay down for a bit. Will talk to you gals later.

Hi there!

Well, my favorite hobby is gardening also! I've been gardening for many, many years and it's the best therapy I know. My hubbie always jokes that his wife "loves" yard work and playing in the dirt. I do! My roses are my pride and joy even though I can't get out there to tend to them like I use to. I still try real hard though! I would be brokenhearted if I lost one. And yep, black spot is a constant battle with roses. It's a shame a flower so beautiful is plagued with such an ugly disease! But I just keep spraying and spraying them! I think I subscribe to every gardening magazine known to man!

Besides roses, I have aloe, bird of paradise, lantana, gladiolas, angel's trumpet, hibiscus, jasmine, palm trees and several other species. I miss not spending the whole day in the garden like I use to, but I'm thankful for the time I do get out there (then I pay for it afterwards - ugh!). I had been taking care of my elderly mother until her death and when I lost her, I didn't know what to do with myself so I started gardening. It saved my sanity. In fact I named one of my roses "Tina" after my Mom.

I also write poetry and songs and love home decor and crafts. And of course, I always have my constant companion (besides my hubbie!) with me which is an apricot colored cockapoo named Dusty. He's my baby and a cutie pie to. His face looks like a cocker spaniel but his fur is that of a poodle. I could probably spray Endust on him and he could dust the house while he runs around - hee! LOL!

Oh yeah, I do have a few house plants too: aloe, jade, bamboo and a snake plant. So far they're doing good. I want to start a herb garden one of these days. Would love to be able to pick fresh herbs for cooking. That's the next thing on my agenda whenever I can get it done.

Well that's it for me. Thanks for asking about our hobbies. It's nice to hear good things for a change instead of our daily struggles. Take care! Linda :D

Oh no Jen!!!! Don't tell me you actually got a pick flamingo????? Didn't you say you would try to hold back your impulse to got there? When is trash day? If the trash won't pick it up by Monday, please burn it! :blob_fire

I hope your trip goes well. I am saying a prayer for you. You deserve a fun weekend after all you've been through.

Hi there Linda! I've missed seeing your posts lately~ How is hubby's back? Wow, I didn't know you were so into gardening! We already have one tomato that's almost ripe. I guess we finally found the one thing we don't have in common because the only garden I have success with is my rock garden.

This has been such a fun, uplifting post! A big thank you to whoever started it!
Hugs,
Kayley ;)

LOL Kayley

No,,, i was strong and resisted the urge to go the pink flamingo way lol.
Well went so austin for sons baptism, weather extremely HOT. Went to one of his friends house spent some time visiting, then we all went out to a movie then out to dinner. I wore myself out TOTALLY tho.
This morning, son went to church and we were suppose to meet with him there for the 11 oclock service and then all go out to dinner with im and some other friends, but, my body had overdone it. My insides (where all the reconstruction and adhesions being cut had been done) was hurting. I was exhausted due to the anemia and knew i couldnt push my body anymore than what i had already.
So we went to church and talked to him and i apologized for not being able to spend today with him and his friends for church or lunch and he totally understood. He loved the gold chain we bought him and told me he was so very glad and appreciated the sacrifice i made to go there to see him baptized. But he said go home and told his dad, take her home dad and take good care of her. SHe needs it right now. So we came home right after that, me crying of course cause i felt tired, and felt like i had let everyone down, but they told me NOT to feel guilty, so im doing ok now.
Well gotta lay down for a bit again.
back later,
love ya all

Jenetti.............Honey dont feel alone in this if there were a way to kill silk plants I'd have figured it out by now. When my Grandmother was alive she used to save me......they'd be hangin on (barely) I'd take them to her and she would do her thing. I promise you she couldn't kill one if she tried. And my son is either very lucky or there is a problem no grandbabies thats what could really bring me alot of joy, But for now my little Maggie (Yorkshire Terrier) takes up most of my free time, and runs this house.Shes my little Sunshine, always glad to see me , unconditional love, I can raise my voice and it hurts her little feelings so bad but 15 seconds later shes forgotten all about it. Shes my baby girl and I know some people dont understand the obsession butshe gives me so much love back......maybe I need to be posting elsewhere........just kidding.she is my baby though. And I started writing a song years ago............but couldn't finish and lost interest.............."I've Got Tears in My Ears from Laying on My Back and Crying over You" Just a little humor.............................VERY little humor!!!!! ;)

Linda,

If you feel up to it you will never regret starting an herb garden. I use mine for cooking and I love it. It's so nice to try new things with all the different herbs. One suggestion, never plant mint in your herb garden. It will take it over. It spreads like wildfire. I always just buy it if I need it or plant it in a planter where it can't take over the neighborhood. LOL. I will also agree with all of you about the pets being a lifesaver. I used to have a cocker spaniel but she died 2 years ago. She had cancer and it spread all over. We had to have her put down and it almost killed me to do that. Our vet told me she was suffering and it was time. Her name was Angel. I also had a cocker when I was growing up. Her name was Cokey. They were both blonde cockers bread for show. I loved them so much and they were very protective. When I brought my youngest home from the hospital Angel became his bodyguard. She slept by his crib whenever he was in it and if you went in there at night you had better announce yourself. LOL. Toward the end when she had lost most of her hearing I would turn on the light and holler "Angel". Joshua (my youngest) still talks about her. I swore I would never have another animal after we lost her, but when I was in the hospital back in the fall my parents decided my children needed another pet. So, we have a rescued kitty named Isabel. We got her the week of hurricane Isabel, hence the name. She is the sweetest thing. She knows when I'm upset or hurting. She will come get in my lap and just give me all the love in the world. She is a very special kitty. The vet estimated she will be a year in August. It's almost like she knows she was rescued. I know that sounds weird but those of you who have pets know what I'm talking about.

I agree about this thread. It was a wonderful idea. It's nice to finally talk about the good things in our lives. It's a bright spot in a very dark world. It also makes us a little closer I think.

God Bless,
Sherry

All of the posts have been great. We get to know what we have in common besides pain. I like gardening too, I planted tomatoes, zuccini, chilis and bell pepper all are doing really good. Its really a mini garden every time I work it the yard i suffer for it, so i kept it small. Its alot of fut and I check them every day after work I love watching there progress. My Mr stripey tomato plant is much farther along then my sweet 100's.

My Puppies are getting to the age where they can play the shis tzus are 5 weeks and the doxies are 4. They are so much fun..to much work but worth it.

Thanks again for all the reply's

Ohhh one of my fav subjects are pets. They are truly our babies, i know alot of people think we're crazy when we treat them just like our kids but i dont care. I had one person relative actually say , i dont like animals, could you put her outside while i go visit?? I said sure, if you leave your KID outside too while youre visiting me . I dont care if they visit me or not, uhm for your info , lol NO SHE DID NOT visit me after all. but that is ok. Im feeling a bit better today and son wrote me a beautiful letter (email) today that brought tears of happiness to my eyes. HE loved the gold chain with the mariners cross on it.
UPDATE: my second navel, hehe is finally CLOSING< YEAAAA!!! Its about as deep as maybe the tip of the qtip im using to clean it out and trust me compared to what it was, it is MUCH MUCH better and will close very soon. Thank GOD for that!!!!
So much better mood today, i would have a pink flamingo burning party today thats how happy i am today had i any pink flamingos lol.
My baby (ginger) missed us, oh she was sooo happy, too bad we cant post pics of them on here. Id love to be able to see pics of your babies too.
Everyone have a GREAT DAY today ladies, (and gents), cause i know i plan on it.

Hi Lovely Ladies!

This is such a cool post! I get the biggest kick out of reading everyone's joys (and sorrows). We really do seem to have alot in common besides our aggravating chronic pain! Yippee!

Kayley, my friend, how are you?! I haven't seen you posting much either and I was worried about you. How's the pain doing without the surgery? Are the meds keeping it somewhat controlled? I'm still so thankful that you decided against that surgery. I was honestly scared to death for you when thinking about the surgery possibility. Of course, trying to live with chronic pain sucks too but we are tough, we are brave and we are WOMAN! (sorry guys!) Hee! LOL! Hey, where's that grandbaby anyway? I thought she was anxious to make her presence in this world. Hope everything is going well for her Momma. My hubbie has to go for an EMG tommorrow. He had an epidural done Friday. He was suppose to have a bone scan done last week too but the dumb machine broke down. How comforting! They want to rule out a small, hidden fracture. The PM doc mentioned maybe he'll need to go to a neurosurgeon but he sure as heck won't have back surgery unless it's a last ditch effort! He's seen what darn shape I'm in after all my surgeries so he really doesn't want to go there. I agree. Sometimes I just think back surgery makes things even worse. If it's a disc (not a fracture) and it's not causing any permanent damage, he wants to just try and manage it with PM. Thanks, Kayley, for asking! Sorry I haven't been posting much but have just been real busy taking care of him. He's worth it though. LOL!

Sherry, yep I really want to try my hand at an herb garden. I've heard about the mint being an invasive little creature so thanks for the heads-up. I won't go there that's for sure. I have a couple of hugh decorative planters that I'm thinking about using for the herbs since my garden is pretty full - ha! I would really like to grow some dill, rosemary, parsley and oregano. I kinda would like to try growing some lettuce but just don't have the room. I don't think growing lettuce in a pot would work too well even if it's a hugh pot! I think maybe next week I'll go to Lowe's (one of my favorite stores!) and get started on the herbs. I'm having alot of pain right now but it's been rainy weather so I know it makes the pain worse. Ugh!

Well gotta go for now. Take care my sweet friends! Keep me updated on what everyone is up to, OK? Much love, Linda :D

Okay Ladies You'll notice how I include myself in this right off the bat...........if ya' wanna just tell me to butt out........that I have no seniority. But do it tomorrow, had to put down our new puppy this AM with parvo so its been a sucky day. Maggie (my main squeeze) baby girl Yorkie hasn't had alot to say about it she sorta acts like she misses her but at other times shes back on top runnin things again. OHHHHHH back to my point I was gonna make, what about one of the instant messengers or is that against the rules also....if so it was a thought. I probably need to go back and read the rules and regulations again. This part-timers is rapidly trying to go fulltime!!!!! As I said just a suggestion might not work but there ought to be some wat we could get togrther in another venue.................I've enjoyed this helps me get to know a little more about everyone................that ain't saying I'll remember it but I'll know something about somebody. Maraich, I'm so sorry to hear you had to put your puppy, that must be so hard. And don't be silly, I'm glad you joined our post and we're not going to tell you to butt out!LOL

Hi Linda my friend! Nope, no baby yet! She's taking her sweet time, but if she hasn't gone into labor by July 2, the doctor is going to induce her. I'll let you know when the big day comes. I'm getting so excited I can't stand it!LOL

I hope the epidurals help your hubby. I sure hope he doesn't have to have surgery. Let me know what the test tells, ok? Thank you for all your support on my decision, it really means alot to me. I'm sorry I haven't been posting a whole lot either. I was busy with my family when they were in town and now I'm exhausted

I hope all of you have a good night's sleep tonight and a pain free week.

Marich,

Welcome to the group. You aren't butting in at all. We are all friends here. I'm sorry about your puppy. I know how that feels. I hope things go better for you the rest of the week.

Linda,

No problem about the mint. :) I will also give you one more little hint, Rosemary is another bugger to grow. It doesn't like wet feet. It needs to be planted in a well draining soil. If you put it in a pot, you will have to put rocks or something on the bottom. There are several websites that give advice on growing rosemary. If you search the web you will find some good ones. :) And if you have any questions that I can answer I would be glad to help if I can. Take care.

God Bless,
Sherry
