Sponsor Chellaine 06-18-2004, 01:56 AM I always used plain corn starch on my son when he was in diapers. It keeps them dry without added perfumes of powder. You could also try Balmex or Desitin. I know they are a little messy but they help too. Hope this helps. Chellaine Laurie2 06-18-2004, 04:52 AM I used cornstarch with mine and if possible, just let the area be allowed to be left "bare" to the world. Diaper rash hates fresh air as it needs the confinement to breed. MandyAnne26 06-18-2004, 06:47 AM All the tips given are good, the only thing i would suggest is if your using any type of powder make sure your not shaking it on, put it on your hand than on the babies bum, if your shake it on than the baby could inhale it and it can cause problems for the babies lungs. Also, if your baby is very prone to diaper rash apply vasoline or a diaper rash prevention cream at every changing and make sure that you clean the babies bum very well. I've never used any kind of powder on my kids, i use zinc oxide cream (basicly any diaper rash cream). Air your baby out whenever possible, even when he doesn't have a rash. Also, if you notice the rash isn't going away than you should take him to the doctor, sometimes what we really think is a diaper rash is really some kind of yeast infection. Twins aboard 06-18-2004, 12:52 PM I personally use A&D ointment. It keeps the moisture from the urine from coming into contact with the rash. My kids sometimes get rashes so bad the skin starts to peel off and bleed (acidy foods are killers). I try the best I can to keep them away from it. HTH lanena64124 06-18-2004, 11:04 PM thanks everybody you all were very helpful I'll try some of these tips thanks you!! Gatormom 06-19-2004, 06:09 AM My daughter's pediatrician had her "blow dry" (carefully, from a distance) the baby's bottom after rinsing him off with plain water. As others have posted, fresh air and light help - the area needs to be dry as much as possible. The one thing to watch for is yeast infection - babies can have this on their skin just from yeast organisms in the air. If they have it, the rash will be VERY red and angry and can look as though the skin is peeling away. The baby may be very uncomfortable, too!! If it's yeast you are going to need a prescription to clear it up. All of my grandkids have had this at least once, and needed the Rx to get it healed. Jean9 06-30-2004, 10:34 PM My dr told me about an over the counter cream that the pharmacies either keep behind the counter or they can order it for you. It is called Resinol, it is a thick beige colored ointment. It says on it for cuts, scrapes, burns etc... But this worked wonders for me with my youngest. She had very sensitive skin and this did not bother it. I used it almost every time I changed her to help prevent a rash. BioAdoptMom3 07-01-2004, 12:38 AM If it is yeast, especially now that its summer, try to get your baby into a chlorinated pool. We discovered this by accident. The prescription and otc rememdies will work eventually, but the chlorine in the pool works much faster. After two times in the pool it was about 90% better. According to our ped (I told him about it at a later visit), anything with bleach properties kills fungus. Nancy Trio 07-10-2004, 10:07 PM I use penatin cream (zinc oxide cream) and then use vaseline as a barrier cream to prevent anything from coming in contact with the skin. I find it works quite well. rosyposy 07-11-2004, 06:15 AM are you using cloth diapers or disposables? i cleared up the rash and prevented further symptoms by doing the following: prescription cream, diaper liners and extra bathing when the rash was bad pure soap flakes instead of detergents to wash cloth diapers hanging cloth diapers out in full sunshine to kill any bacteria never using plastic pants allowing the baby to wear nothing at all wherever possible trying all brands of diapers until i found the most absorbent protective barrier cream overnight cheers limey37 07-15-2004, 03:12 PM Egg whites are really good for bad diaper rash, they form a barrier between babys skin and the urine, the main pro to this is the almost no cost. reijo 08-01-2004, 02:39 PM At 6 months old my grandson had to have heart surgery. While in the hospital he developed diaper rash. It wasn't REAL but but the nurse told my daughter-in-law that when there is a bad rash in the hospital that they use liquid anti-acids such as Maalox or Mylanta. Just use a cotton ball or something similiar and rub it all over their bum. It worked! |
