almost every member of my family had/has carpal tunnel ... and i'm wondering if that makes me more at risk to get it...also...how early can i get it...i'm only 19 and already my thumbs go numb and get really sore and i'm worried taht that is the start of carpal tunnel...

According to my surgeon, latest research shows that there's a heredity factor in conditions that involve nerve entrapment like carpal & cubital tunnel syndromes. Guess that means the answer to your question is 'yes' - seems you'll possibly be more susceptible.
However, having said that, it seems younger people are getting CTS far more frequently these days, hereditary or not. Texting, gameboys etc. mean that younger people are putting their thumbs & wrists to much more use than in previous years when we didn't all have mobiles & computers etc.
