First off let me say this...I have seen so many horrible things on the subject of children prescibed drugs. There are few if any drug companies that have solid knowledgable proof that the drugs they are giving to our children are not going to later in life prove to hurt them. Some of you on this board have read my posts. I always encourage you to do reasearch and do what is best for your child and situation. We hate that our 10 year old is on these drugs. He has been on Risperidol, Seoquel, Remeron, Depakote, Zyprexa and now Geodon. The cocktail doctors make me sick. The only drug we had any luck on was Zyprexa but it was short term and took almost another year to get him off it. We had to learn the hard way. We trusted doctors in a mental facility because we felt they had the knowledge to help us..they were a childrens facility. Who would second guess right? Well that was where we learned you dont change meds or take a doctors word for anything--I personally do not care how long they have been prescribing or how long they have had their title. I research everything and for the most part that is on a daily basis. I try to stay up on new drugs, alerts, recalls etc.. I visit the National Institute for Mental Health so much I should get paid for knowing the site so well!! What I guess I am trying to tell people is this--if you are the one taking the drug and you do not like the way it is working or the way it makes you feel or if you have a child on a drug and and feel the same way then you need to be firm in your expectations. Your childs life depends on it. I have been diligently searching for alternative treatment. Four years on meds and our biggest feat was no hospital stays for 2 years. We have faced facts that our son will not be like other children. He will live life in a Bipolar world. But we work hard to make his world the best it can be for him. Sometimes that isnt easy. But we take it one day at a time and learn. Yes some children do wonderfully on a med that may not work for another. But see thats the important point. Not all drugs work for all people. Three years ago it was cocktail drugs. Seroquel, Remeron, Depakote. Anyone know a 7 year old on 600mg Seroquel, 22.5mg Remeron and 700mg Depakote that dose @ bedtime and then again in the morning???? We refused and were told--it works for the majority of the population!! I was appauled! Our child is not the majority he is an individual. $4000.00 a month for medication that wasnt working. We took him for a second opinion. He was immediately taken off that cocktail. We were also told that children are the guinea pigs for the drugs. If it works wonders for children just imagine what it will do for adults!!! So the long and short of it--We as his parents learn everything we can about whats out there and WE make the decisions as to what he will take. We decided to try Geodon. Its not doing him a world of good so we are looking once again. With all that said and a breath taken ;) Love your children who must live life in a special world within our society and remember.....this is my opinion and take---not anything more. Just want to let parents know that we have to be educated in the choices we make for our kids. God bless, thanks for reading!
