Hi folks,

I was just wondering a couple of things about VRT. First of all, is there any place (web link?) where I can find out how to do VRT exercises? I seem to be having some trouble finding info on them. Second question: Does VRT have to be "customized" for each person, depending on what their particular ailment is? Or can I just find any old VRT exercises and do them, without fear of doing additional harm (or no good)?

The reason I ask this is because I've been told by my ENT that based on my test results, I'll probably need to do some VRT, but it might be 3-4 months before I can get in to see a rehab doctor. I don't want to wait that long! :)

Thanks everybody!
Dave

Hi dave,

It should come up if you type in Vestibular Rehabilitataion Exercises or Cawthorn Cooksey.

Nope the exercises are pretty much generic, should be fine to try.

My only advise is you start of gradually and built them up.

You may wish to do the visual fixation exercises in addition, they are basically holding a word on a card, focusing on it and shaking you head left right left right.

If you find a a specific exercise does not have any effect then you dont bother with it.

Good Luck

I just finished VRT--3 months-twice a day. The first time you go you will have an evaluation by the therapist and then she will start you on a series of exercises to do at home. Each visit, we went over my "homework" and then added one or two more, if she felt I could handle it. I can honestly say that it hadsreally helped. I did the exercises each day and decided that I was going to conquer the dizzies and imbalance. What was so great is that I felt that she was the only one who really undestood how I felt. Go for it--what have you got to lose? As for where to find them try vestibular exercises as a general search. But if you are going to VRT, wait and see which exercises would help you.

Some made me extremely dizzy, but the therapist said that was good and for me to continue doing the ones that made me dizzy. The less dizzy each one made me, we eliminated. The really nice thing is that the therapy is at a med. school and after I completed my final therapy, I can continue my therapy on my own--using the foam, balance beam, treadmill, trampoline, and any other equipment in the center for $30 a month. The therapists will be there in case I need to ask questions or help.
