I have been wearing my night guard for about 3 months now. It has been helping. This past week I decided to see what would happen if I didn't wear it for a few days. On the second to third day my jaw became sore after simple things of talking and eating soft things. So needless to say I have been wearing it. Where do I turn to now? Do I just have to wear this night guard for the rest of my life? I have major clenching and minor grinding. My TMJ is no where near as severe as some of the stories I have read on here which I am greatful for.

Hi--
I wore 3 different night guards over an 8-year period. They would help for awhile and then I would quit wearing them when they were no longer helping or actually making me feel worse--I've been told that my jaw has a lot of "play" in it and will find different ways to bite. My dentist's assistant told me she has worn one for 24 years. So I guess if it works, stick with it.
In my case, my pain became much worse and I finally went to an orthodontist who specializes in correcting problems that cause facial pain. He put me in a splint 24/7 for about six months, and I am now in braces. I've been pain free for almost 10 months until recently when I developed the worst pain I've ever had. We're still working on that and it's getting better. I've had a lot of stress over the past year with family matters--he thinks it may be that and the braces moving teeth into a temporarily uncomfortable position. I still have faith in him because he has done me more good than anyone else without just throwing drugs at me.
Good luck!
