What is your primary goal? I don't think you need to take both the seeds and the oil. But the seeds are known to cause more gas and digestive problems that the oil.

really? so the seeds do the same? that's what i thought. basically, my goal is to be healthy. i only have 3 pounds to lose and i can lose it by cutting calories and still taking my fish oil, olive oil and flaxseeds. i typed in google the recommended dose for these fatty acids but i didn't find anything. thank you for your reply! :)

Here is some basic dosage information for flaxseed and/or flaxseed oil. You can see that 1 tbsp of oil will provide maximum benefit for most conditions. It is recommended to take the oik with food for best absorption. Also, you must keep the oil refridgerated - it spoils VERY easily (noted by a strong foul odor)
1 tablespoon oil, mixed with food or juice
Skin Health
Sunburn (Can also be dabbed directly on sunburned skin)
1-3 tbsp. ground flaxseeds, mixed into large glass of water
Constipation
1 tbsp. ground flaxseeds, mixed into large glass of water
Hemorrhoids

It won't hurt you to take the oil and eat the seeds. They accomplish two different goals. You are probley not chewing the seeds enough to digest them so they are doing the job of helping to clean you out. They are fiber. Do you put them in a grinder and eat them that way? That is the best way. I do that and then put it in the blender with soy yogurt, soy milk and All In One. I add honey as the yogurt has no sweetening. I also add fresh fruit.
You need the oils for a completely different reason. They are essential fatty oils, which we all need. I have read that boarge oil is better than fish or flax seed oils, but I haven't tried it yet. Something about digestion, I seem to remember.
If you are doing all of this to be and stay healthy, read "Back To Eden". You can probley pick up a copy at the library or at a used book store as it was written in 1936. It is pretty intense but a great book if you have the will power to change the way that you eat. It contains cleansing diets, recipies, explantions as to why we should eat healthy, and is a great herb reference guide.
I have used this book for years. If you follow his advice you can have a well balanced life. None of the people that I have heard speak lately follow his advice. His advice is geared towards total health without fancy dieting. It makes sense. It is based on fruits, veggies, oils, herbs, water, balance, and elimination. It talks a lot about putrification of foods in our system and how to stop that process.

Well you do have to be careful about consuming too much fat! There is so much talk about getting the good fats and YES they are important for health, but they are still fattening. Many people confuse the term "good fat" and think that means it won't effect weight - it WILL!
Remember that every gram of fat = 9 calories. 1 tablespoon of oil is typically 120 calories, regardless of the type of oil you are consuming. So if you are consuming 3 tablespoons of oil, that is an additional 360 calories per day!!! The real key is, as with anything, balance. Try to replace unhealthy fats with healthy fats, but don't INCREASE your fat intake! Also try to balance your ratio of omega-6 fats to omega-3 fats to approximately 2:1.

im about to buy some oils for a hair problem (telogen effluv. due to nutrition issues!) and im looking at the flax, fish oil, cod oil and not sure if i get a little of each , or is there an oil with all 3? they say all are good for hair issues, but it sounds like too much and too fattening to take 3 servings a day!

I just take the fish oil and eat the seeds now. I agree that all these oils are confusing and fatening too! I'll just continue to eat healthy, take my fish oil and eat my seeds! :D
