i screwed up my wrist over 3 weeks ago and it is still tender and swollen. i can get through my workouts using painkillers and a wrist wrap.

i think it's just a sprain, but i wonder if i should quit working out for a week or two since it's not getting any better, or maybe even see a doctor about it. anybody with experience have some advice?

I sprained my wrists a while back doing bicep curls. I went to the doc and all he did was take an X-ray (expensive) and told me it was a sprain. Only advice he gave was to take it easy on them and wrap an ace bandage on it for a few weeks. Doesn't have to be all the time, only at night if you prefer not to wear one in public. I wouldn't say stop working out necessarily but you should refrain from any wrist movement and wear a wrist wrap. Remember if you're feeling pain then you're doing more damage and if that strain sticks around too long without you letting it heal up properly your looking at arthritis down the road when you get older. 2 to 3 weeks of not much major wrist strain and you should be good to go. Just lay off on the stuff that involves a lot of strain on the wrists.

I had a similar problem with my wrist last year. After going to the doctor, he diagnosed it as severe tendinitis! Gave me a shot in the wrist and about 1 week later I was back to normal....Still going strong now!

Hi CAPiTUH,
I would definitely not work out if you need to take painkillers to get you through a workout. Do not ignore the signals your body is sending you. If you do not let this injury properly heal it may be with you for years to come.

I damaged my wrist doing concentration curls, and like evryone else i hated the idea of taking a break from exercise. However after 8 months of pain I decided that it was time to get wise and let my body heal.

I stopped doing all exercises that put pressure on my wrist and it took just over 2 months for the pain to completely go away. I know people who have permanent injuries because they ignored their pain.

I say lay off the wrists for a while. I got tendinitis in my back and I hated the fact I had to quit working out for nearly 3 weeks! It sucks yeah, but you can always go back to working out after your rest, only this time you'll be healthy. You can get back any gains you might have lost(which won't be much if you watch your diet.) I always overtrained and the results were injury, but I learned my lesson. It's not worth the risk of setting yourself up for a life time of pain. Like every experienced exerciser says, "ALWAYS LISTEN TO YOUR BODY!"

It'a actually kind of funny seeing this topic because I injured my wrist this past Tuesday. I was doing curls, standing between the uprights on a cable machine that is usually used for chest.

On rep 10 of the 4th set Oooowl that hurt. Right wrist. The first thing I did was put some arnica gel on it. I keep it in my gym bag. I also stopped by a health food store and picked up some homeopathic sublingual arnica (30x). I went to the doctor just to check it out and he said ice no bandage as it will keep in the heat.

Two days latter I am typing and have virtually no pain on regular movement. It was very bad as I could not move two of my fingers without pain that rated about 8 on a scale of 1-10.

Go get some arnica and massage it in at least 3 or 4 times a day and keep moving the wrist. You don't want it to stiffen up.

I use light wrap at night to prevent me from straining it if I should toss and turn will sleeping.

I had a wrist sprain in a game i thought, i could play more games in lacrosse i went through and played for 2 more weeks. I was like what??? how is still hurting so i went and got an x-ray and he said it was fractured the big bump on ur wrist on the side has a broken chip. Its not really painful but u should get it checked.

I've been using a homemade remedy for my hand pain. It consists of olive oil, capsium, coneflower extract, bearberry extract, shea butter and peppermint oil. So far it seems to be doing the job and only needs to be applied every other day. Good Luck in your search.
