Please could yu share your experiences with flying good/bad.

I have inner ear dysfunction caused by labs.

Its not the actual flying thats worrying me, more the constant motion as I get yucky with motion.
How did it effect you? My last experince with flying was most unluckily for me during acute labs and as you can imagine was horrific. But I had NO choice as I was flying home from the states. My husband s desperate to go to France in 3 weeks and I want to but have still got symptoms. I am scared, I have already missed out on several trips abroad...........

Ilia,
I flew after I was about 4 months into this thing and while it wasn't pleasant, it did not make things any worse. The airplane ride itself was bad because my ears popped all the time and I was spatially disoriented if I wasn't looking out the window. From the UK to France shouldn't be too bad (the flight can't be more than a couple of hours). As my doc said today, you'll never know your limits if you don't try the things you've been holding off doing. I've had 2 neurotologists tell me that flying will not damage my inner ear further since my middle ear is functioning normally.

Now, all that said, I have no desire to fly right now because I don't want to go anywhere!

Hi everyone,
i too was wondering about flying, however i have mav, I'm not the best person at flying but don't mind it so much now, although since i've had mav i haven't dared even think about flying, sorry i'm no help Ilia!
Was wondering Ilia if you have started VRT?, Do you go and see someone that helps you with the exercises or do you do them at home?

My specialist has given me a sheet with exercises on, they include eye movements, head movements and some others, i've not been shown how to do them, so i dont know if i'm doing it right. I also walk 25 mins every night (briskly) that makes me dizzy so i'm guessing that must be good thearpy too.
I'm just a bit lost with it.

Also does anyone know if anti dizziness drugs (stemitil) stops the vrt from working?

Thanks
Shen xx

Hi Ilia,

Given the fact that I think we're kind of in the same boat symptom-wise at the moment I really think you'll be fine. You've been pretty good now for sometime and I don't think even a quick trip in a jet will screw that up. In fact, on the way home from Toronto I was absolutely fine even though it was dodgy going to Europe....but that was when I was really bad still. At the worst you might feel uneasy for the first 30 minutes or so and once you relax - no problem. Go fo it!

Cheers...Scott x

Hi all,

I've had labs for 7 months now, and have flown at least 15 times since having it (with work.. not holdiays unfortuantely!!). At first I must say I was very anxious and it seemed VERY wierd... I think I also had problems being enclosed with so many people around me (which only happened since getting labs) but now I have to say I don't really have any problems flying at all. Although it does feel completely different (as does everything else) it really is no big deal. Also, remember that if your flying to France that is a very quick flight so you'll be there before you know it!!

But hey, everyone seems very different with this illness.... only go if your happy to fly!

Hi Ilia, you know my experience BUT my first 2 hr flight last year was FINE. It was the long prolonged motion 13 hr one that did it. So If I was fine then for 2 hrs you certainly will be. Dont worry at all. I am certain u wont have any probs.

Shen - yes stemetil is not to be used with vrt or any other vestibular suppressant. Do you know how MAV affects flying scientifically shen?

Hi emsybobs,
I'm not sure how flying effects MAV, my specialist said it would be fine, but i'd rather hear from somone that knows if you know what i mean, I remember readind wowwweee's post and she said something about flying but can't remember if it was a good or bad experience.
Thanks for the advise on the stemitil.

Shenxx
